The remarkable simplicity of the A319's (as well as the A320) flaps obscures their aerodynamic efficiency- a continuous trailing edge flap that's only single slotted (compared with the 737's triple slotted flaps) yet still gives the Baby Bus family good field performance. Having the inboard flap match up and seal neatly with the outboard flaps contribute to its aerodynamic performance with no inboard aileron or thrust gate to interrupt the flap span. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kdfw #dfw #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #airlines #megaplane #instaplane #airbus #A319 #american #dfwavgeek #instagramaviation #N9008U #avgeekschoolofknowledge #wearetxgmers #avgeekery

Having collected 1/400 scale models since 2000 means I've picked up some pretty unique subjects over the years like this Boeing 737-100 in America West's original colors. That's right, a-100! In convenient man-toy size! Boeing only made 30 737-100s (most went to Luthansa) before the more successful and slightly longer fuselage 737-200 replaced it- the -100 was six feet shorter than the -200). Around five or six of Lufthansa's -100s ended up with America West which started services on 1 August 1983 with Flight 105 flying Phoenix-Colorado Springs-Kansas City. They had a few 737-200s before getting the -100s. This model depicts N701AW which was delivered to Lufthansa in 1968 as the second 737 ever built (line number 2!) and sat in storage in Hamburg from 1981-1984 where it was picked up by lessor AWAS and leased out to America West as N701AW and flown until 1987 when it was passed to Ansett New Zealand. It sat in storage again for a few years in Christchurch until it was picked up by Transpacific Enterprises who flew it for a few years before she got scrapped at Marana in 1995. Back in the late 80s and early 90s I flew America West's red eyes a lot as a college student between DFW and PDX when my parents lived up there. Amazing how busy LAS and PHX were in the middle of the night with red eyes from all over transiting through their two hubs. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #THECHICKENPORT #squareready #airlines #boeing #737 #americawest #instagramaviation #n701AW #avgeekschoolofknowledge #aerosanctuary
Here's a contrast using my 1/400 scale man-toys- an America West 737-100 and an Alaska 737-900. The -100 made its first flight in April 1967, is 94 feet long and seats 85 in a typical two-class configuration with a MTOW of around 111,000 lbs. The -900 first flew in August 2000, is 138 feet long and seats 177 in a typical two-class configuration with a MTOW of 187,700 lbs. #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #THECHICKENPORT #squareready #airlines #boeing #737 #americawest #alaska #instagramaviation #n701AW #N306AS #avgeekschoolofknowledge #aerosanctuary

The sign parts I can make out include "mercantile company" and "dry goods, hardware, groceries & _________." Not sure what the rest of it says. Something else, which I can't read from my phone screen (from which I'm posting this), apparently was painted over the part on the far right. Are you able to read other words?

There's always a lot of debate amongst Mooney owners as to why the distinctive vertical fun of Mooney aircraft is the way it is. Some feel that Al Mooney did it to be a nonconformist, others feel he did it because it looks cool, and others feel it has certain aerodynamic benefits. My readings of the subject suggest to me that it was done to simplify production. The vertical fin and tail plane were built up on the same jigs in the Kerrville, Texas, factory and both left and right tail planes are interchangeable (symmetrical airfoils). Unusually, Mooney's aircraft move the entire empennage for trim- this way the rudder and elevators don't need trim tabs, further simplifying their construction. I didn't note the tail number, but I think this might be a Mooney M20F Executive, but not too sure. Anyone know which M20 variant this is? #Avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #nikon #d7000 #dslr #kads #ads #addison #airport #airplane_lovers #igtexas #squareready #planespotting #mooney #m20 #megaplane #instaplane #instadfw #instagramaviation #avgeekschoolofknowledge
The alphabet soup of P-40 variants runs from the prewar P-40As to the advanced training P-40Rs. The Aleutian Tiger of the warbird circuit is an early production P-40K- the Merlin-powered P-40F had an enlarged fin and stretched rear fuselage (see the Flying Tiger Warhawk I've posted for that difference enemy though that Warhawk is a P-40N). But shortages in Merlins at the time resulted in the P-40K with an Allison engine. Later in the production run a dorsal fin fillet was added to improve the directional stability, but further in the production run of the K variant the best solution ended up using the enlarged fin and stretched fuselage of the P-40F. So the same variant of P-40, the K, had three different versions which ideally would have gotten new variant designations.
One side lags behind the other during the retraction cycle. Retraction used an electric hydraulic pump that in most Warhawks was inadequate as it took forever to retract the gear- the pump wasn't string enough to retract both gears simultaneously. Some P-40 pilots even supplemented the pump by using the emergency hand pump if they wanted the gear up quickly.
