A day in a Junkyard

Salahuddin Ahmad, Melbourne Polytechnic, Victoria, Australia.

Either it is an accident or beyond its age, our carefully handled favorite car gets old, damaged, rusty, abandoned or impounded and becomes unwanted. It then finds a temporary shelter in a junkyard. A junkyard is also known as a car wrecker, a place where damaged or old vehicles are broken up and recycled to obtain useable parts and scrap metal.

Junkyards make a significant contribution to the economy. It is estimated that the vehicle attrition rate in Australia is 4.1% which is approximately 700,000 vehicles a year and produces 980,000 tonnes of waste each year. Thus, it requires a significant amount of workforce involvement to safely dispose of these vehicles as well as sustain the growth of this industry.

Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, a junkyard in Springvale, Victoria is a busy place full of activity throughout the day. People come here to sell their unwanted cars as scrap metal or collect recyclable parts from the damaged vehicles. There are 3 multi-dismantling machines, 2 forklifts, 6 trucks and 4 automotive lifts in operation with 36 shift workers to operate and run the business.

The Junkyard offers an environmentally friendly place to dispose of unused and unwanted vehicles. These unwanted cars contain toxic battery acids, toxic chemicals, engine oils, and other fluids which can cause long-term damage to soils, water, and air quality. To minimize the environmental impacts, the most environmentally friendly way is to dispose of them in a junkyard with authorized operators.

Location: Imlachs Self Serve Auto Parts, Springvale, Victoria, Australia.

Trainload Petroleum 60007 'Robert Adam' at Springvale on Wolverhampton Steel Terminal to Lackenby. 30/07/94

Last day of trains using the level crossing - Wednesday April 16 2014. Over the Easter long weekend the line was closed to allow works to connect the new lowered line under Springvale Road. For the final few days trains were stopping at the UP platform only with a bus connecting to Sandown Park for the DOWN service.

The following day track and overhead were being removed from the old line making way for the connections to the new line.

Grilled Thai Sausage - Kao Gang AUD6

---

We initially wanted to try Pawan Thai across the car park, but it was full, so it was back to the reliable Kao Gang, only to find that they were under new management. Still the food was as good as before. There were 2 other Thai families dining while we were there. I guess that means it is quite authentic!

We all loved the Thai dressing on the deep-fried bream. It was intensely sweet, sour, salty and spicy hot! It was thick and syrupy. Perhaps it could have been a little less salty, but it was still good. So salty, we had to order an extra serve of plain steamed rice so that we could soak up the dressing! :P

The grilled Thai sausages were a bit of an eye-opener. It was filled with sour pork and toasted rice. I think the sausage was fermented, giving it a tangy sour taste.

The Focke Wulf P-149D is a very capable Luftwaffe training aircraft, which is very much the product of the Italian aviation industry. The Piaggio P.149 was a four seat all metal, low-winged monoplane touring aircraft, which featured a fully retractable undercarriage, large cabin area and powerful Lycoming engine. It was developed from the earlier P.148 two-seat primary trainer, which was a tail-wheel training aircraft, in service with the Italian Air Force. Initially, although the aircraft showed great promise, it had an uncertain future, as large orders were proving very difficult to come by and the earlier version was already in Italian Air Force service. At this point, the aircraft gained a pair of unlikely champions – former Luftwaffe fighter aces Adolf Galland and Eduard Neumann. In the summer of 1954, the pair had entered the Italian Air Tour Flying Rally and had the opportunity to fly the prototype Piaggio P.149, which impressed them very much – it possessed excellent handling characteristics and was an extremely reliable aeroplane.

Just one year later, the Luftwaffe were holding a fly-off event, to select a new training aircraft for the force. The competing aircraft were the Piaggio P.149, the US Beech T-34 Mentor and the Saab 91 Safir. During the fly-off, the Piaggio flew flawlessly and clearly impressed military officials – unfortunately, at the end of it’s display sequence, the pilot forgot to lower the undercarriage and made an ignominious belly landing, to the great delight of the other competing teams. Perversely, this was the best thing that could have happened and actually sealed the success of the aeroplane. By the morning, the aircraft was back on the line and ready to go, having been repaired overnight. The easy maintenance and rugged design left a great impression on Luftwaffe officials and the Piaggio won the contract.

The first 72 Piaggio P.149D (the ‘D’ denotes German) aircraft were supplied to the Luftwaffe in kit form and assembled in Germany – these aircraft carry Piaggio data plates on the fuselage. Following this, the production licence was sold to Focke Wulf and a further 190 aircraft were built at the German production line in Bremen, with these aircraft carrying Focke Wulf data plates. Bearing in mind the heritage of WWII Luftwaffe aviation, could those two numbers have been any more poignant – Total production run 262 aircraft – Number built by Focke Wulf 190! In actual fact, we are probably using a little poetic licence in calling the Bremen produced aircraft a Focke Wulf. Even though most of the aviation world refers to them as the Focke Wulf P-149D, the totally correct denotation would actually be the Piaggio FW P.149D, but it is not quite as good a story! The aircraft did go on to serve the Luftwaffe and Marineflieger with distinction, remaining in service for well over thirty years. I also think that I am right in saying that the Focke Wulf P-149D was the first German manufactured aircraft since the end of the Second World War, so all in all, she is quite an interesting little aeroplane.

Made of a new age cast iron and ground down to give it an even surface. The grinding process seems to leave a swirly pattern. Not sure if that is a good thing!

Not bad to cook with, but obviously not non-stick. At least I don't have to worry about burning it. I'll still go back to a non-stick for frying rice, noodles etc.

Let's see how long this will last. The last Tefal non-stick cost me AUD49 after a massive discount from AUD149. That lasted about 3 years. It's not as non-stick as it used to be.

Dad got some baby greenlip abalone from Seafood Smart in Springvale, AUD20 for 10. I steamed them for about 10 minutes with a bit of grated ginger and spring onion. Delicious! Much tastier than the ones I had in a restaurant, and more tender than I expected.

With a few crunchy bits of heart and intestines!
