Springvale Botanical Cemetery’s War memorials..
The Victorian Garden of Remembrance is situated within the Springvale Botanical Cemetery in Melbourne. The original garden was opened in the early 1960s and was extended in 1988. The extensions were officially opened by the then Minister for Veterans' Affairs, the Hon. Ben Humphreys MP, on 3 March 1989..

Midway, between the entrance and the commemorative stone, a path leads into the extended Garden of Remembrance. A little way along is the plaque marking the dedication of the extended garden..

The visitor proceeding through the garden will walk through the European Sunken Garden, which is bounded by a covered pergola, then on to an Australian Dry Creek Bed and the Asian Garden. The European and Asian gardens symbolise the main theatres of war in which Australians served during the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts..

A nice example of why the site is now a nature trail. The pools are teeming with life, which in turn supports a community of birds and mammals around it.

An aerial photograph of the Springvale area taken in the 1960s or 1970s. This was a wonderful adventure playground. Best viewed large. Annotations as follow:
1. Springvale Cottages. At this time, these were just the foundations and gardens. Across the track from them were the coke ovens. The buildings associated with these were still standing in the early 1960s.
2. The concrete coal washery tower, by this time lying flat after having been blown up by the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers in the 1960s.
3. The old Cwmbran Colliery offices; at this time a farm, and across the old incline from the Main Adit. Demolished and now part of a wood incorporated into Greenmeadow Community Farm.
4. Main Adit, opened in 1879 the last adit to be worked at Cwmbran Colliery which closed down in 1927. Bulldozed in by the council in the 1980s.
5. This was some sort of foundations for an engine house. Now filled in, grassed over, and incorporated into Greenmeadow Community Farm.
6. Bridge over the tramway just down from the Main Adit, The piers remain. Below this bridge, along the retaining wall, a local family tended this as an allotment, it being known as "Bugs' Prop". In this retaining wall is also a small adit known as the Water Adit. Greenmeadow Community Farm, against the advice of the last owner of the colliery offices farm who said it would turn into a boggy morass, attempted to turn this area into a large duck pond. As a result, today it is - a boggy morass.
7. The Blue Star Garage on Maendy Way (8). Now Colley's Motors. The area behind it became part of a large landfill site which today has sports pitches on it.
8. Maendy Way, laid in the 1950s up to West Pontnewydd and Upper Cwmbran. The lower 7 should be 8.
9. The Birches. I can remember these houses under construction in the late 1950s.
10. Adit Walk going across Greenwood Avenue to Maendy Way.
11. Broad View.
12. Wimbourne Rise.
13. Greenwood Avenue.
14. Shale extraction area. Huge amounts of shale were taken from here for the foundation of Llanwern Steelworks, built in the 1960s. I remember large numbers of lorries racing back and fore like scenes from the 1957 film "Hell Drivers". This also became a landfill site and today is part of the Springvale Industrial Estate.
15. GKN upper foundry built after WW2; at this time they were chiefly making cylinder blocks for Perkins marine diesel engines. This whole upper area is now Springvale Industrial Estate.
16. GKN Administrative Offices. The Blewitt Cwmbran Iron Works bridge span on the Half Way Bridge in Old Cwmbran used to be in front of this building. Today, Torfaen Training Department offices.
17. Clomendy Road. This led off from Commercial Street and ended in the GKN complex. Today, the lower end has been incorporated into Greenforge Way.
18. The site of the Cwmbran Iron Works cold blast furnace built in 1800. Here you can see railway sidings on it. Subsequently it housed Ardep Pool Liners, then a furniture warehouse and today, the Victory Church. The retaining wall is built partially with dressed blocks of furnace slag and is one of the few reminders of the iron industry in Cwmbran.
19. The old works laboratory and ambulance station. Today, the site of the RAFA Club.
20. Greenhill Road.
21. Woodside and Greenmeadow Brickyard Cottages. Until 1900 there were brickworks on this side of the canal; after the last one had closed, in 1902 a new brick works was built on the other side of the canal, but this closed in 1925. Today, these cottages are surrounded by new, private houses.
22. The Monmouthshire-Brecon Canal. Now heavily culverted here at Forgehammer.
23. The Newport-Blaenavon Eastern Valley Line. Closed to passenger traffic in 1963 and finally, in 1980 after the closure of Big Pit in Blaenavon. Today, through Cwmbran, it is Cwmbran Drive.
24. The GKN lower foundry, known as The Malleable, and at this time Precision Forgings. They made smaller castings such as swinging arm suspension units for Morris Minors. I worked here one summer holiday as a core setter. Today it is Cwmbran Retail Park.
25. The Electricity Board sub station and offices. Originally generating its own electricity, today it is much reduced in size, sandwiched between Sainsbury's and Lidl's. Just below it can be seen the GKN sports ground, once Brookfield Junior School, now a housing estate. The adjacent gasometer of Cwmbran Gas Works is also now gone.

A visit to Melbourne almost always entails a trip to Springvale Botanical Cemetery, and this trip was no different. When Heather went there to visit my mother’s grave, she would often cut flowers from nearby gardens, or quietly take them from other graves for mum. So when we go to visit her, we choose not to buy flowers, following her tradition instead, cutting them from my father’s garden, planted years ago by my sister when she lived there.

The focal point of the Song He Yuan Buddhist cemetery is the magnificent Di Zhang Wang Temple, with its design drawn from the Tang Dynasty.
`The temple provides a permanent home for the specially commissioned Di Zhang Wang Buddha, offering the Buddhist community a special place for ancestral worship.
Song He Yuan also features the Dragon’s Head on the top of the water feature, a statue of Guan Yin, imported from Fuzhou, statues of Amitabah and Dasezi and a number of pagodas, traditional water features, bridges and gardens.
The Feng Shui of Song He Yuan Buddhist Cemetery
When Feng Shui Master, James Yao Wen Zheng first surveyed Springvale Botanical Cemetery, he unexpectedly found a large block of land due to the west of the cemetery to be exactly at the settlement of the Dandenong Mountain.
He explained, “Down the settlement is a natural stream stopping the qi of the land and hence pingyang channel is formed. The soil is fine but solid, moist but not flooded. It is rare and one of the best pieces of qi gathering land. I thereby formed an indissoluble bond with this land.”
As the best of Feng Shui is cangfeng and qi gathering, all elements of the design, landscaping and construction took into consideration the advice of the Feng Shui Master. These included the widening of the stream, the building of the Dragon’s Head and bridges, the flow of water, the location of the temple and the heights and shapes of buildings and statues.
“The distribution is symmetric and balanced in the overall Feng Shui design to achieve harmony of yin and yang; the special atmosphere of being balanced, stable, serious, solemn and respectful…the heights and shapes of different building and statues go well, corresponding with each other and meet the Feng Shui principle of balancing left and right, being harmonious with yin and yang, stillness in motion and motion in stillness.”

44 units built 1959-1961 at Holgate Works, York, and classified AM8. Built for GEML services out of London Liverpool Street, displaced in early 90's by new class 321's. Some units saw service during 1993-94 on Cross-City and other West Midlands service pending introduction of new class 323's. After WM services they were transferred, and overhauled, for the newly electrified West Yorkshire services which began in 1994.

Varian Techtron was the result of a merger between the Australian company Techtron and the American firm Varian Associates in 1967. The Springvale Road site (then in Springvale North, but now in Mulgrave) was established by Techtron and is still in use, but now as Agilent Technologies (which acquired Varian in 2009). Techtron Appliances was established in 1938 and it and its successor companies have produced a variety of electronic and analytic equipment for industry and scientific research, notably including Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers (AAS) to CSIRO specifications.
