Dinosaurs in the suburbs.

An Asda trolley casually dumped in undergrowth by the path from the retail park to the Springvale roundabout.

We got in at noon, just before the crazy crowds! Springvale is always busy on Christmas day.

Located in the shopping strip south of the (current) railway crossing, this was completed in 1968, along with road widening was undertaken through the shopping strip. Springvale Road in Springvale was initially a two lane single carriageway until the road widening project saw demolition of the shops on the eastern side and a dual carriageway constructed. New shops were then built alongside the widened road.

Although State Library Victoria dates this photo as being "between 1950 and 1954" based on "other images in collection" the two station wagons indicate a date range from the late 1960s into the early 1970s.

Similarly, although State Library Victoria tentatively places the location as Glen Waverley based on incomplete information, the Sands & McDougall's Directory of Victoria of 1970 places Comalco on Springvale Road in the suburb of North Springvale, which today would be Mulgrave.

The stream which flows past the Main Adit, and was managed by a reservoir further up to maintain a supply of water for the colliery Boiler House. At this point, where it kinks slightly, it is lined with fire bricks; in this stream I have seen Stourbridge Fireclay Co, Cwmbran Fire Clay Co and Henry Parfit(t) fire bricks. All came from the Upper Cwmbran brick works, from different periods in its history. To the right of this stream is the Main Adit, bulldozed over by the council in the 1980s.

Cwmbran Colliery opened in 1837 at the Porthmawr Adit in Upper Cwmbran, also known as the Clay Level because of the excellent grade fireclay discovered there, causing an adjacent brickworks to be opened in 1839 to exploit it. In 1854 another adit, the Mineslope Adit was opened a little further up the mountain and in 1879 the Main Adit was opened in Springvale near the Cwmbran Iron Works (later GKN). The colliery closed in 1927 with the sealing of the Main Adit. The previous shift's entire output of coal was sealed in after the miners left the adit for the last time. A tramway system ran from the Mineslope Adit to Old Cwmbran where it linked up with the Cwmbran-Caerleon tramway which finished at the wharf on the River Usk.

The section of tramway from The Woodlands (Thornhill Road) to The Half Way in Old Cwmbran. This tramway came from the Mineslope Adit (c. 1856) and the Porthmawr Adit (1837, the first adit of Cwmbran Colliery), and merged with the tramway out of the Main Adit a little down the hill from this photograph. After the level, horse drawn stretch from Siloam Chapel, Upper Cwmbran to The Woodlands along what is still named Tram Road, drams were conveyed from here by gravity again. Once a useful footpath, further down it is almost impenetrable and higher up, it is something of a fly tipping area. Close to where this picture was taken used to be Woodlands Cottages until at least the 1970s. These were workers' cottages, since demolished to make way for a social housing estate.
