Crispy Chicken with Garlic Dust 风沙鸡 AUD18 - Tan Lac Vien, Springvale.

Yummy crisp-skinned chicken. A very small and tender chicken with a sprinkling of fried garlic dust and croutons for extra crunch.

Thought I'd swing by the Southern Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Springvale, Maine on my way home from work this evening. I wanted to get back there and capture the memorial; something I didn't have a chance to do on my last visit.

On 1 January this year, I photographed this 1968 registered Morris Minor undergoing refurbishment in an adjacent workshop (see below). They seem to have done a good job.

The Catholic Primary School of Saint Mary's was here for over 100 years. All that is left is this date plaque.

Paul and Suk Hi want to cut this down because it's dying. Poor tree.

Springvale Homestead was built in the 1880s and is the oldest standing homestead in the Northern Territory.

Crab noodles - Tan Lac Vien, Springvale. 2 crabs, 6lbs at AUD23 per pound, plus 3 serves of noodles. Good, fresh crab, but overly salty, and the shells were quite thick and heavy.

Thanks for the treat, Uncle Cheong!

Good strong beef broth and a clear chicken broth. Raymond had the Bun Bo Hue, which had a nice beefy soup too.

Springvale Station, Melbourne

The stream flowing past Cwmbran Colliery. A little further down, it is joined from the right by water pouring out of a secondary adit known locally as the Water Adit. Given that it flowed on down past the Woodside Brick Works, it may well have been used by them. Futile attempts to landscape this area as part of a duck pond for the Greenmeadow Community Farm, against local advice, resulted in the creation of a boggy morass.

Cwmbran Colliery opened in 1837 at the Porthmawr Adit in Upper Cwmbran, also known as the Clay Level because of the excellent grade fireclay discovered there, causing an adjacent brickworks to be opened in 1839 to exploit it. In 1854 another adit, the Mineslope Adit was opened a little further up the mountain and in 1879 the Main Adit was opened in Springvale near the Cwmbran Iron Works (later GKN). The colliery closed in 1927 with the sealing of the Main Adit. The previous shift's entire output of coal was sealed in after the miners left the adit for the last time. A tramway system ran from the Mineslope Adit to Old Cwmbran where it linked up with the Cwmbran-Caerleon tramway which finished at the wharf on the River Usk.

Found on Springvale industrial estate, Cwmbran. This is one of the later Henllys bricks, manufactured at Two Locks, Cwmbran.

A "Frijj tree" at the bottom of the wood at Springvale near the top end of the industrial estate. They went to the trouble of decorating the bush with it, why couldn't they have gone to the trouble of taking it home or finding a bin?

A book of pictures and memories from the Community Projects Centre which used to be located in Victoria Street in Old Cwmbran. This publication was produced in 1976. A shame that nothing similar exists today, producing these books and what were known as Checkpoint Calendars showing old photographs of the Cwmbran area.

The path at the edge of the works was a continuation from Clomendy Road. I can remember the coke buildings, but the chimneys had gone. On the left of the picture you can see Springvale Cottages, demolished when I was a child but the foundations and gardens still clearly laid out. Now under the Springvale Industrial Estate.

When I was a young child in the 1950s and 1960s, the ruins of Cwmbran Colliery and the Coke Ovens were still there, and a fabulous adventure playground. The first adit was dug in 1837 in Upper Cwmbran, just above where the Siloam Chapel is. In the 1850s, the Mineslope adit was sunk further up the hill and the Main Adit at Springvale, opened in 1879. The colliery closed down in 1927.

Driving to work in the rain, I had an idea to visit the Mousam River in Springvale down by the Indian's Leap on my way home. I felt that the newly popping greens, freshly wet from rain should be accompanied by a swifly flowing river. It was a race against another approaching rain shower when I finally arrived on location in the afternoon, but the rain soon came and cut things short. (Time to purchase some sealed gear...and a super wide angle!) I did manage to get a couple of long exposures, accompanied by my CP. It was an awesome sight with all the fresh growth coming alive once again!
