What do you call that quiet stream that meanders through the woods and fields? It might depend on where you grew up. The Webster's New World College, Fourth Edition Dictionary lists both creek and crick as acceptable pronunciations for creek. "Creek" is common everywhere but New England (where they are referred to as "brooks") and the Northwest; "crick" is more common in the West, North Midland, and the North except for New England, and both are common in Wisconsin where I live. Writer and humorist Patrick McManus describes the difference this way: “First of all a creek has none of the raucous, vulgar, freewheeling character of a crick. If they were people, creeks would wear tuxedos and amuse themselves with the ballet, opera, and witty conversation; cricks would go around in their undershirts and amuse themselves with the Saturday night fights, taverns, and humorous belching. Creeks would perspire and cricks, sweat. Creeks would smoke pipes; cricks, chew and spit." Crick or creek or something else? What do they call it where you live or where you grew up?

Ended up at Messenger Woods late this afternoon. It was overcast and flat all day until sunset when the clouds broke up and the light and color came through. Spring Creek was swollen to the point you can just barely make it across the bridge. You can see it has been higher recently by the ice rings left around the trees as the water level drops.

Spring Creek Rainbow...Self-Portrait

Collier State Park, Chiloquin, Oregon

The weather has been nasty here with lots of rain. There was a bit of a break from the rain yesterday morning, Christmas day. So, I decided to go to the South Yuba River at Edwards Crossing and Spring Creek. Quite a bit more water in the river and creek than when I was there about five weeks ago. I only got to stay for about an hour or so before the rain became too much. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas day.

Spring Creek, Ballara:

The crossing and waterhole of Spring Creek, 7.4km northeast of Ballara, was once a link in a long journey used by coach companies in the early 1900s. The camp was a site for travellers and drovers alike, and was a reliable watering point for their horses. One can still find remains of bed frames, water tanks, and relics upon the adjoining ridge. The large ghost gum tree at the crossing still bears the marks of past travellers.

One of my favorite waterfalls to visit. A popular place in the CVNP and much photographed. I was trying to find a different view from the shots I took the last time we visited. Thanks for taking a look.

Colorado Springs, CO - I was out doing a real estate photo shoot in the Spring Creek area and couldn't resist taking a picture of the community gazebo. The morning sun lit up the mountains and it was sight to be behold. This is one of the many reasons why I love living in Colorado.

one good thing about the time change, I actually woke up early enough to go play before getting ready for work today, and found pretties! The rays shining down onto the Columbia and over the town of Hood River, Oregon were amazing.... while to the left WHite Salmon and Bingen, Washington are connected to Hood River by the Hood River Bridge.

below the bluff I am standing on, you can see the Old Broughten's Mill, closed down now for years, but many old times I have taken care of worked for at this mill for many many years. Here is one page of history I found www.sdslumber.com/sds_history.htm The mill boasted a several mile long log flume that carried cut boards down to this mill from a sister mill high up on this mountain behind me in a town called Willard. THe log flume was still functional back in the 80's, I am not sure right now when it was closed... and was well known as one of the last functional log flumes of such great length. I did find a blog showing many photos of this flume at different stages of life

I know Gary Randall and John (rooftop65)rooftop are collectors of interesting historical information for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and maybe they will add some links for more information in the comments!

Also a bit to the left here you can see Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery that lies just West of the White Salmon River and Bingen. www.fws.gov/gorgefish/springcreek/visit.html

Rickiduck below added a link for Lassie riding the flume... I will put it here too
