I've been crunching numbers today instead of looking for insects and wildflowers. What does a dry autumn mean for total rain overall for the rain year?
I collected data about San Marcos Pass rainfall from the Santa Barbara County Hydrology website. I got the data into Excel, and did quick and dirty spreadsheet. Then I collected the data for September-December rainfall vs. total rainfall. I did this a month ago for September-November rainfall, and found no correlation. Now there appears to be a slight one.
If you look at my chart, you can see that there is a cluster of years on the left that start and finish dry, and the is a slight upwards trend to the data. It's not a strong trend, but it shows that more Sep-Dec rain often means more total rain for the rain year. But there's still hope. The green line shows where we stand this year, with just 1.82 inches of rain so far. Other years have looked just as bad, and had near-normal rain. (Our average in about 35 inches.)
There is still plenty of wobble in the data. There are years like 1991 "March Miracle" storm dumped 20+ inches of rain in March after an even drier start to the year. (That's the second data point from the left.) There's still hope for a normal rain year!
But it is a very dry year. See my [Next] chart to appreciate just how dry it is.
