N's Learning Timeline for this semester. I have editing rights over the Google spreadsheet, while both my student and her parents have commenting rights.
We're going to let the power of the spreadsheet get the slope at each point, as in the previous table. Spreadsheets were built to automate this process so that you only have to do a calculation once and the computer repeats it for you.

We were sat next to each other at the breakfast bar. I was playing with spreadsheets. Azra was uploading her photo of today. Spreadsheets seem to be a fact of life these days. I once passed twenty-nine years without giving Excel so much as a second thought! I wonder where it all went wrong.

I think many locals are wondering whether less rain in the fall means more rain overall. It's a nice thought in this dry autumn of a drought year.
I collected data about San Marcos Pass rainfall from the Santa Barbara County Hydrology website. I got the data into Excel, and did quick and dirty spreadsheet. Then I collected the data for Sep-Nov rainfall vs. total rainfall. I'm sorry to say that there is no correlation at all. The graph looks like a shotgun blast. Some years with no early rain have been wet, and some have been dry. I added a trendline, but it doesn't mean anything.
This weather year will be what it is, wet or dry. Be that as it may, there's always something interesting happening in the woods. I just hope it's mushrooms and wildflowers and not oak trees dying. (San Marcos Pass, 20 November 2013)

K-Means algorithm is one of the most-commonly used clustering algorithms. Clustering algorithms try to group similar data points (may have various meainings) with respect to a selected criteria. These algorithms are widely used in data mining, pattern recognition, image analysis, supply chain management, etc. Like all clustering algorithms, K-Means algorithm tries to assign data points into a determined number of clusters, K. The algorithm assumes that each cluster has a center (centroid) and aims to minimize the sum of distances of data points from the centroids of clusters that the data points are assigned to. This algorithm is a fast algorithm that converges rapidly with good solutions. Random initialization prevents the algorithm from being stuck to a bad solution. This template runs the algorithm with VBA code, therefore macros need to be enabled. The algorithm may be run either once at a time or each step may be observed in order to observe the convergence process of the alg.

Because I don't know how to use an Excel spreadsheet, my OCD-laden travel planning takes place across books, food critiques, food blogs worth their beurre fleur de sel, newspaper articles, and conversations with friends who've been to where I'm going. Then I schedule everything out in a Word document, with food and drink stops conveniently selected for that day's exploration route.
