I'm not a fan of cloudy days, but I am a fan of spreaders and plows, especially this gem. Maine Central Jordan spreader 799 clears the mainline as it heads east through Montague in January of 2011.
I've taken 6,300 images of these Pileated Woodpeckers flying around in the woods (at 20 frames per second, it adds up quick). Think this is my favorite image.
I just got word that this photo of mine was picked up for the 2015 issue of Santa Cruz magazine "Let's Cruz" 20th Anniversary Issue. A vistor & convention guide both in print and online version you can see my photo on page 12-13 spread. :D
This small thunderstorm was about 35 miles away at sunset.
The distinct anvil down wind of the thunderhead "updraft" was made more obvious in the low sun contrast on the clouds.
Cloud brightness and contrast was changing by the minute. The auto exposure on my Fujifilm camera was being challenged. I made manual adjustments in post-processing.
This clip represents about 20 minutes.

The female Cardinal showed up at the feeders looking extra happy. Maybe it was because I'd just refilled all the feedersl
Her spunky little attitude makes me smile, so I'm hoping it'll do the same for you.

I'm not one to usually participate in themes on here, but Snowplow Sunday during a heatwave seemed appropriate. Although the heatwave here in NS ended last night, its still ongoing in much of New England, so out of respect to those still suffering, here's a chilly throwback to ease the burn! GMTX 2645 & 3055 power NBSR Spreader 402896 on the Fort Fairfield Sub this past February, with wings mostly extended. In short order, the wings will be retracted until the extra clears the crossing at Egypt Road, and then once again extended to buck the big drifts approaching Easton.

Another golden hour image? Guilty. I love it sooo much!
I may upload a few more from this afternoon, I'm in the mood to play around on photoshop!
Hope everyone has had a good day!
Over the past couple weeks I've shared a number of photos from the most recent trip that I did in northern Maine. As tomorrow is Sunday, and I'll be working sometime in the morning, I figured I'd post a contribution to "Spreader Sunday" a few hours early. Ironically, my friend Geoff and I actually took this first set on the Sunday we arrived, as the work extra parallels Black Water Road, approaching Masardis proper. We found out at some point during this day, that we narrowly missed these guys leaving Oakfield by a mere 15 minutes.
Under the cover of darkness, SPMW 4031 heads east through heavy snow at Soda Springs. On the night of March 12th, 2023, Union Pacific’s snow fighters found themselves in an all-out battle for the mountain.
A series of heavy winter storms dumped multiple feet of snow across the Sierra Nevada Mountains. With a rotary snowplow working the #2 track, SPMW 4031 was tasked with clearing the #1 tack between Shed 10 and Norden. The snow fighters would work long into the night before arriving at their eastern terminus at Truckee Snow Headquarters.

As is tradition when the first major winter storm of the season lines up for the midwest, here's a groin-grabbingly cold shot from the archives.
A GP40 and Jordan Spreader work west as a ground blizzard (where snow already on the ground blows around and causes trouble) in north-central Iowa begins to subside; strong northerly winds shut down the roads and railroads alike - the interstates opened just in time that morning for me to make the trek down from the Twin Cities.
Let's see what Hans-Erik Jason Mark Myra Linda and David think of this one compared to yesterday's version with the sea showing a little. I'm voting for the latest one (Umhlanga Beach).
I've called this one "Signature Paradise" (all my photos have a name so when they appear on Flickr they are not called "IMG_7563" wink emoticon. No cropping has been done as I'm still deciding which way I want to present it.
Update: this photo is the Signature Photo for the Beverly Hills Hotel 2015. It's on their brochure front page and inside (double spread).

On the 26th I headed to the park early to get in some fresh air. There weren't a lot of people so I was very happy.
As of this morning the 28th all provincial parks have been closed to vehicle traffic in an effort to curb the spread of the Coronavirus. I was happy that I managed to get one last visit there. I went this morning to find the gates closed. Several cars were parked along the roadway as people decided to trek into the park.
Thanks for your visits and comments! They are all greatly appreciated!
parts of the Omaha skyline, spread-out and peaking above the hills by the river. Shot at 200mm on a very hazy, hot, and humid (H3) day from the 1,400-acre Fontenelle Forest nature preserve.
I recently returned from a week in my home town, Omaha (for Fathers Day, the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium, music & good friends, etc).
