Spindler Hall was built in 1940 and dedicated to Lavina Spindler, a WMU faculty member from 1906 to 1939. Throughout this period she served as Director of the Campus School, Dean of Women, and Freshman Advisor. Originally a women's dormitory, the building is now used to house doctoral, graduate, senior, and non-traditional students.

Funny how I haven't seen this species before I took the shot of the moth last year, and now everywhere I go the Spindle bushes (Euonymus europaeus) are full of the caterpillars.

A native shrubby tree that is a good indicator of ancient hedgerows and woodland. Not common though in recent years increasingly included when planting new hedgerow, it is found in all the Windrush hedges and along both rivers.

Spindle wood is exceptionally hard allowing it to retain a point and so was once used for spindles and even toothpicks. (Though it is likely the name derives from the Dutch "spilboome".) Spindle charcoal is also prized by artists.

Nectar rich small green flowers in late Spring and berries providing a winter food source for birds both make Spindle a welcome sight, it also provides food for the spindle ermine moth. Less welcome for gardeners it provides a winter nesting site for black bean aphids, but this in turn attracts large numbers of overwintering ladybirds.

As part of the required course knowledge pupils need to be able to outline the process involved in taking a square wooden blank and preparing it for turning between centres. These pictures depict that process chronologically.

Stage 1 * Preparation of wooden blank. Cut to size. Sand square. Mark across diagonals. Centre punch the centre point. Use spring dividers to mark circumference. Repeat on other end.

Stage 2 * Plane off corners down to circumference line. This takes cross section from square to octagon. This reduces force on cutting toll in initial prep of blank. Mount between fork [driven] centre and dead [or live ] centre at tailstock end. Apply grease a dead centre end. apply force from tailstock end to force fork into material at driven end. Adjust toolstock height to suit. Check for clearance.

Stage 3 * Roughout using scraper to diameter. Use combination of gouges and skew chisels to add beads and other decorative detailing as required. Ensure spindle speed is appropriate for material and cross section under consideration. Obey all safety instructions.

"Listen well, all of you. The Princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who know her. But, before the sun sets on her 16th birthday, she shall prick her finger, on the spindle of a spinning wheel - AND DIE! AHAHAHAHA!"

Morgaine gifted me a *lovely* koa-wood 'Needle' spindle from Cascade Spindle Company. It spins for about 2 hours at a time. I might be exaggerating. But only a little.

Spindle is a deciduous native tree, and mature trees grow to 9m and can live for more than 100 years. The bark and twigs are deep green, becoming darker with age, and have light brown, corky markings. Twigs are thin and straight.

Identified in winter by: the vivid pink fruits which have bright orange seeds. Buds and twigs are angular and green.

Here is a look at the yarn wound onto my 1-yd niddy noddy. Aside from the neps in the roving the yarn is remarkably even for it being my first real session of spindle spinning. I found the trick was to actually sit down rather than trying to stand and hold the roving over my head like I was told to do in October

Two spindle backed chairs that had one snapped spindle each - all repaired and ready to return to their owner.

A brief explanation of some of the physics behind spindle spinning, including why bottom whorl spindles are more stable.

If you'd like to use this image in a spinning class, please contact me and I can send you a higher-quality PDF that will print out nicely.

My son broke my spindle after finishing just one project with it (well actually, just the singles). I usually keep it better protected but I left it sitting on a shelf for a couple hours. The next thing I know he was carrying it to me saying "Mommy? did I broke it a little? "

I will of course be sending it back to the maker and paying for a repair if he does them, because it was a lovely spindle in all respects.

I went to Lowes and found all the pieces (except for the skate bearing) to build my own Kick Spindle. Its a kind of supported Spindle for spinning wool. I'm so happy with it. What do you think??

We were cruising the Strait of Georgia from Nanaimo to Comox on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island last week when we sighted a solitary Orca (Orcinus orca) in the distance.

At first, I thought I was seeing a crab-pot float with a very tall spindle. Then I realized it was moving, and I knew I was looking at a cetacean.

Actually, my first impression - a fishing float spindle - is an interesting example of how the mind supplies explanations for novel information. The fact I've never seen a float with a spindle in these waters didn't deter the little gray cells from offering an interpretation - any interpretation - when put on the spot.

But enough about cognition. While I am a novice when it comes to observing Orcas, I understand Orcas usually travel in pods. This Orca appeared to be alone, because I didn't sight any other fins. I don't know enough about Orcas to explain the significance of sighting a lone male. If any viewer has insights about this, please let us know.

As you will see from the next series of photos, this individual's tall, vertical fin marked it as a male.

You might have supposed that either I reverted to using my old Kodak Brownie camera for this shot, or lighting conditions were less than favorable at the time.

Well, as someone once said, you go with the Orca sighting you have, not the Orca sighting you'd like to have.

A very familiar cityscape, but there have been a few changes to St John's Beacon and the precinct beneath it even if not, on outward appearance to the Holiday Inn...

St John's Beacon is now home to Radio City and the top part of the spindle had some kind of broadcasting/advertising hoarding added to it a few years ago when they moved in.

These are from the fourth batch of 'Liverpool - Then and Now' photo collages that I put together during a hectic but interesting couple of week's project in December 2012.

I've treated the project as a 'treasure hunt' trying to work out the exact location that the original shot was taken, and this section of the set were taken at various times between 1890 and 1980, mainly around the city centre but some also taken in the suburbs in the north end of the city.

Sometimes the exact angle is no longer possible, due to new buildings in the way etc but I have got myself as close as I could and learned a bit more than I did about the buildings and lives of people that were around Liverpool before I was.

For the 'Now' shots, I tried to put the onus on duplicating the original rather than necessarily getting the 'best' shot I could, so if the original was wonky, I wonked up the modern one. I also tried, where possible, to catch any modern equivalent details, so if a

tram or car or pedestrian was in the original, I tried to get a bus or car or pedestrian in the same spot - that was by no means always possible, though.

A note on copyright issues - the last thing I would want to do is use someone else's work without their permission. Most of the 'Then' pictures I either bought in a secondhand bookshop or found on the internet. I believe most of these pictures are either postcards, engineers or sanitation department records pictures and just the very occasional individual person's photograph. I believe very old postcards and the like are generally 'in the public domain' so haven't done much checking on ownership of them. On the shots where I have been able to work out a previous Flickr appearance, I have emailed the persons I believe to be the owners and asked for their permission to use them.

Where they have given permission I have credited them accordingly.

If anyone sees others that they hold the copyright for, please do contact me - I would be more than happy to credit you as such and add any information you would like, or I would remove them altogether if preferred. Saying that, I hope as many people as possible enjoy what I've put together, and I would be interested if anyone has any questions, comments or corrections!

Thank you for looking!
