#0969: Those yellow filament-like crowns on the background are actually cactus spines from a bunny-ear cactus glowing in the sun. Location: Huntington Garden, San Marino CA
The moon had set, and the night was crystal clear but very cold. Even from my suburban backyard, NGC 3115 (the Spindle Galaxy) was not difficult to see in the 155mm refractor. A bright nucleus surrounded by an extended sphere of light with thin straight arms spreading outward in opposite directions. It was a fine sight.
This galaxy was missed by Messier but made the Caldwell List (#53) and the Herschel 400 list, so it is often visited and enjoyed by amateur astronomers. NGC 3115 has the distinction of having the nearest-to-Earth, billion-plus solar-mass black hole. With an active 2 billion solar-mass black hole at is core it is not a surprise that its bright nucleus shows so well in the eyepiece.

Spindle (Euonymus europaea) fruit. Spindle is a deciduous native tree, and mature trees grow to 9m and can live for more than 100 years. The bark and twigs are deep green, becoming darker with age, and have light brown, corky markings. Twigs are thin and straight. The leaves are eaten by caterpillars of moths, including the magpie, spindle ermine and scorched, as well as the holly blue butterfly. The leaves also attract aphids and their predators, including hoverflies, ladybirds and lacewings, as well as the house sparrow and other species of bird. The flowers are a rich source of nectar and pollen for insects such as the St Mark’s fly. Photo by Nick Dobbs 29-10-19 Londonthorpe Wood, Grantham
This is my home-made drop spindle, its 50g 12 inches long and made from bits I found around the house.
I went to Lowes and found all the pieces (except for the skate bearing) to build my own Kick Spindle. Its a kind of supported Spindle for spinning wool. I'm so happy with it. What do you think??
Four "fruits" seen yesterday on the New Year Plant Hunt, although snowberries can't be eaten, I don't think I'd trust the others either.
The blackberry wasn't quite ripe, and little chance of it ripening.
There was a whole stretch of laneside vegetation that was just spindle full of berries. A wonderful combination of green and red.
Picture now replaced. Thanks Mark.
Looking like a squadron of flying saucers, these A2-5 spindle shafts will soon be assembled with bearings and spacers to create complete spindles for Haas ST-10 turning centers. The shafts are turned from bar stock on a Haas SL-40L Long Bed turning center – equipped with live tooling and C axis – in one of the many robotic cells at the Haas Automation factory in California.
2nd single is done which is on the spindle bouquet
fiber on left is the 3rd single that needs to be spun.
Lace and other lightweight spindles:
Grenadilla and ebony Bosworth (.68 oz), Paduak Bosworth (.38 oz), Lignum Vitae Golding (.65 oz), Tulipwood Spindlewood (.65 oz.), and Ebony Spindlewood (.9 oz)
On the Ravelry Spindler's group, April's challenge is "Celebrate".
This is a WIP shot of some spindle spun yarn from one of my first dyed roving, Rosie, and spun on one of my handmade drop spindles.
Rows of 40-taper inline direct-drive spindles await their chance to become the business end of a Haas VMC.
The Haas inline system couples the spindle directly to the motor for vibration-free, extremely quiet operation. The precision couplers, shown here, ensure proper alignment of the system, and allow precise balancing for high-speed operation.
A row of spindle shafts for Haas ST-20 lathes are prepared for final assembly into the spindle housings. All Haas spindles – for lathes and mills – are assembled in a temperature-controlled clean room to ensure the utmost quality and reliability.
This Haas-built 40-taper spindle is fully tested and ready for the production floor, or to go into service stock. The red plastic cover protects the drive dogs and spindle bearings from damage during shipping and simplifies installation, ensuring long and reliable service life.
These precision-machined spindle-motor mounting plates are fresh off one of the many Haas EC-400PP pallet-pool machining centers in the Haas Automation machine shop. The EC-400PP can machine six multi-sided pallets (tombstones) without operator attention. These plates will be assembled to Haas 40-taper spindles for use in a variety of Haas products.
A Golding Ring spindle which is also my first spindle. It was their learn to spin kit from thier website. The spindle is a tsunami and it is about 1.9 0unces
Hand-crafted pine frame with spindles and "bed springs." Bed is painted off white. Mattress and pillow are filled with real down feathers. 1-inch scale.
These 50-taper spindle housings are fresh off a robotically loaded turning center in the Haas machine shop. The housings start out as iron castings, which are robotically loaded into a turning center for facing, and turning the OD and ID. The housings are rough turned on Haas SL-40s, and then moved to a three-up fixture on a horizontal machining center to put in the bolt circle and the features for the lubrication system. The housings then go back into Haas SL-40s to finish the face and bores to size.
