Thread spindles from the mill were recycled in various fashions throughout the building, including use as decorative railing.
This is one of the best quality spindles you will come across. Carefully handcrafted and tested for balance and spinability, this beautifully hand-painted spindle and bowl will bring you many hours of spinning pleasure.
Whether you are just learning to spin, or are already an expert spinner, you will have many happy hours working with this classical spindle.
Russian style spindles were first used in the Russian region of Orenburg to create incredibly fine gossamer shawls famous for their fine quality and delicate patterns (see last photo).
Being of Russian background myself, I love the Russian traditional painting style called 'Khokhloma'. The floral design on this spindle was inspired by Khokhloma folk painting. This remarkable Russian decorative craft dates back to the 17th century and gets its name from the Volga trade settlement village of Khokhloma.
Khokhloma is an original Russian folk art, a unique expression of national culture, and this contributes to its growing popularity. Khokhloma gets its bright, happy character from a distinctive matching of scarlet, black and gold.
I painted theis spindle and bowl using top quality acrylic paints over a maple base that was hand-turned here on Etsy by Joshua Lynch of TexasJeans. This spindle has been tested and balanced for the best spinning performance. I have coated it with several coats of gloss varnish for that extra shine and durability.

As part of the required course knowledge pupils need to be able to outline the process involved in taking a square wooden blank and preparing it for turning between centres. These pictures depict that process chronologically.
Stage 1 * Preparation of wooden blank. Cut to size. Sand square. Mark across diagonals. Centre punch the centre point. Use spring dividers to mark circumference. Repeat on other end.
Stage 2 * Plane off corners down to circumference line. This takes cross section from square to octagon. This reduces force on cutting toll in initial prep of blank. Mount between fork [driven] centre and dead [or live ] centre at tailstock end. Apply grease a dead centre end. apply force from tailstock end to force fork into material at driven end. Adjust toolstock height to suit. Check for clearance.
Stage 3 * Roughout using scraper to diameter. Use combination of gouges and skew chisels to add beads and other decorative detailing as required. Ensure spindle speed is appropriate for material and cross section under consideration. Obey all safety instructions.

I've been a busy wood elf this week.
I've been getting quite obsessed with Montessori teaching equipment of late.
Trying to make as much of it myself. I had this box made by a local craftsman (made from old king billy pine window frames) & I cut & sanded the dowels. It is a self correcting counting tool (not enough or too many rods at the end & there is a miscount somewhere)
I really enjoyed working with wood, if only I had some more time!

"On sugar maple, another leaf gall is commonly found, the maple spindle gall. This gall is also caused by a mite, Vasates aceriscrumena (Riley). The gall appears as thin, elongate bladders arising from the leaf upper surface. These galls rarely distort the leaf but considerable numbers of galls can make the leaves unsightly. "

A simple shot of the London Eye from when I went to the West End last week. HDR's with lines link this can often cause a white halo effect or strong contrast either side so I took my time to try and reduce this. I then enhanced the image with Lucisart afterwards.

Blogged at Jadis Day By Day.
I just realized I never added these to the Bosworth Spindles group, and since the one on the right (an English Boxwood midi) is a wood that I've never seen posted anywhere else, I thought maybe I should. The one on the left is Bubinga.

Golden Spindles (Clavulinopsis fusiformis) are beautiful fungi that spring out of old grasslands in dense clumps, adding a bit of colour to the fields alongside the vibrant waxcaps that often grow in the same fields. The species is sometimes known as spindle-shaped yellow coral, or spindle-shaped yellow fairy clubs. It was first described in 1799 by James Sowerby from specimens collected on Hampstead Heath in London. I photographed this clump in the same fields where I counted 97 Pink Waxcaps in the West Yorkshire Pennines.
So pretty! Gorgeous colors, gorgeous designs! I've been wanting to add some of these prints to my stash for quite some time now. Blogged here.
