I have been captivated by cotton since April, when my son delivered some of his home-grown cotton bolls to me. I had bought a tackle spindle in anticipation of receiving some of the cotton which he grew in his vegetable garden. Since then, I have been in a spin, creating yarn using the tackle, which is a support spindle, that is, it rests on a support while you spin. I bought the pretty little waterlily tea candle holder from a dollar store and have been happily spinning ever since.

Golding Spindles are made in Vermont. They are a high quality spindle with great balance. Plus they are beautifly designedl They are works art! This is a high whorl spindle, the hook is just below the whorl.

This was the first drop spindle I have ever made. It's made from part of a Christmas tree and embellished with stones and a charm to help balance it because....well, it was my first try!

This lovely spindle was made by Gilbert Gonsalves, the wonderful maker of the Robin Spinning wheel.

The beautiful roving is Lorna's Laces and was part of a gift from a dear friend.

When this vendor saw that I wanted to photograph these beautiful drop spindles he volunteered to remove all the tags he had on each of them so I could get a better shot. Everybody I encountered at the show was really nice!

Before the thread can be woven into fabric it has to be transferred onto a fern (spindle) using a viarim (large wheel shown here) to turn the bobbin.

The 12" blank began splitting and had to be cut down. The spindle began to split again as I was turning it, so I removed it from the lathe and sanded the rest down on the bench sander. The finished size is a scant 9". I would have liked another inch, but it works fine.

Schacht Spindle Table Loom

My Grandmother gave me her old table loom with a warping reel and various accessories for Christmas. I'm really excited to embark on a new hobby.

I learned a few months ago that my grandfather and his father worked in a mill in Lowell before he joined the war effort in WWII. Some of the tools they gave me for the loom were tools that he and his father had made. I'm so proud to own this piece of equipment and continue my heritage, albeit in a much more leisurely fashion than it originated.

My first attempt on the lathe. The wood, from Rockler, is pau ferro according to the label. I envisioned a beautiful Russian spindle, but I made the classic rookie mistake of too thin, too soon, and snap! I decided to sand out the pretty arrowhead point and just make a lumpish bit at one end, and I tried to sand as graceful a shaft as I could.

It still has a few bumps and nicks, but the truth? I just love my lemonade spindle!

birds eye maple, .5 oz

fiber is Enchanted Knoll Farm batt in Fern

.........the fact that these are pointed at the tip, leads to me think that that's what these are, the tips also turn brown with age.......there were a lot of these growing along a mossy bank.

The other name I came up with was 'Orange Club' but as there name suggest, they are more club like with a rounded tip, so I think I'm stinking with Golden spindle - Clavulinopsis fusiformis

I love Redheart, and these large spindles are great for working with heavy fibers like Icelandic, and mediums like Romney.
