The Laughing Buddha--Budai, Hotei--whose aspect and rotund belly symbolize joyful abundance, the sack the monk is sometimes depicted as carrying perhaps representing wealth, such as material, or that here is a power that divests one of their sorrows. It is good luck to rub his stomach. The belly taken for granted, I chose to get in close and do a portrait of this Buddha's face, which is such a common sight in some environments that it becomes mundane, and yet may be sorely missed if not present. In a restaurant, he not only represents success for the owner, the one who feeds, but the pleasure of the patron in paying for and receiving a good meal, nourishment.

I never realized that there were figures carved into the timber and roof truss work near the decorated gussets. The figures are of the 12 Apostles, 6 on each side of the nave. This one is near the back (narthex)--a very haunting and moving representation of Judas and his betrayal. This unique carving has become one of my favorites. All of the figures, and barely this one, face the high altar in the front.

Song of the Bowmen of Shu

Here we are, picking the first fern-shoots

And saying: When shall we get back to our country?

Here we are because we have the Ken-nin for our foemen,

We have no comfort because of these Mongols.

We grub the soft fern-shoots,

When anyone says "Return," the others are full of sorrow.

Sorrowful minds, sorrow is strong, we are hungry and thirsty.

Our defence is not yet made sure, no one can let his friend return.

We grub the old fern-stalks.

We say: Will we be let to go back in October?

There is no ease in royal affairs, we have no comfort.

Our sorrow is bitter, but we would not return to our country.

What flower has come into blossom?

Whose chariot? The General's.

Horses, his horses even, are tired. They were strong.

We have no rest, trhee battles a month.

By heavn, his horses are tired.

The generals are on them, the soldiers are by them.

The horses are well trained, the generals have ivory arrows and

quivers ornamented with fish-skin.

The enemy is swift, we must be careful.

When we set out, the willows were drooping with spring,

We come back in the snow,

We go slowly, we are hungry and thirsty,

Our mind is full of sorrow, who will know of our grief?

Info found from Flickr membery Wystan:

This is the statue of Niobe, who kneels atop the Samuel Feinberg monument (1918), in Forest Hill Cemetery, Ann Arbor. Feinberg, 28, was a medical student at the University of Michigan when he died in the Spanish Influenza pandemic that followed the first World War. A native of Bulgaria, he left a widow in Toledo, Ohio. The 1919 Michiganensian (U-M yearbook) was dedicated to Feinberg's memory.

Niobe, who lost her children one at a time through the caprice of the gods (and was forced to watch as each in turn died a more terrible death) became the symbol of mourning in Greek mythology.

Vandals have broken the nose of this figure, and cracked several of her delicate fingers. They have entirely obliterated a photograph of Feinberg that was attached to the monument's base.

"The handful here, that once was Mary's earth,

Held, while it breathed, so beautiful a soul,

That, when she died, all recognized her birth,

And had their sorrow in serene control.

“Not here! not here!” to every mourner's heart

The wintry wind seemed whispering round her bier;

And when the tomb-door opened, with a start

We heard it echoed from within,—“Not here!”

[Mary's epitaph, on the back of the monument and now barely legible, is the first two stanzas of "Her Epitaph", by T. W. Parsons. Here is the rest of it:

"Shouldst thou, sad pilgrim, who mayst hither pass,

Note in these flowers a delicater hue,

Should spring come earlier to this hallowed grass,

Or the bee later linger on the dew,—

Know that her spirit to her body lent

Such sweetness, grace, as only goodness can;

That even her dust, and this her monument,

Have yet a spell to stay one lonely man,

Lonely through life, but looking for the day

When what is mortal of himself shall sleep,

When human passion shall have passed away,

And Love no longer be a thing to weep." ]

Sweet and Sorrow were inspired by William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’. At one point in the play Juliet says goodbye to Romeo with the famous quote: ‘Parting is such sweet sorrow.’ This oxymoron combines contradictory ideas of pleasure + pain. Saying goodbye to Romeo triggers deep sadness in Juliet, but that sadness also reminds her of her love for him, and for this reason it is sweet. These emotions are symbolized by the heart shields on their chest. I wanted to give an impression that they were both wearing armor, and that their feelings of sorrow come from the true identity behind the mask.

A B&W version of an old photo after a suggestion from Critique.

Am I kin to Sorrow,

That so oft

Falls the knocker of my door——

Neither loud nor soft,

But as long accustomed,

Under Sorrow's hand?

Marigolds around the step

And rosemary stand,

And then comes Sorrow—

And what does Sorrow care

For the rosemary

Or the marigolds there?

Am I kin to Sorrow?

Are we kin?

That so oft upon my door—

Oh, come in!

2013-08-26: I don't know if many had heard that the Milwaukee County Zoo announced on August 13th that Puddles, a 37-year-old female hippo, died Sunday after a brief illness. Puddles was born at the Milwaukee County Zoo in 1976, and her mother, Patti, 43, is still there. Zookeepers will be closely monitoring Patti to make sure she's adjusting to the loss, the release said. University of Wisconsin - Madison vet school will be performing the autopsy to determine what caused her death.

The zoo also is also home to a male hippo, Happy, who arrived in 2009 from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C..

I think this particular Hippo is Patty but I'm not 100% on this.

Another one of Chibimoon ^^

I really liked her expression here <3

I think it's from the episode when Rubeus tries to kidnap her. I thought that one was really well drawn.

There were different animators for different episodes, so the drawing style always differed, naturally. I didn't like certain episodes just because of the style ^^;

Done in about 2 hours in Photoshop, screenshot used as a base.
