Trying something new...

Dot is looking at the newest addition to this very old room. It's a vintage tin Peruvian dance mask from Puno in the Peruvian highlands on the shore of Lake Titicaca.

It's Dot's fondest desire to grab a lock of that orange horsehair in her jaws and chew on it. This is the mask's second location. The first was within reach of Dot's inquisitive paws. Somehow, even though I placed it on a high shelf in a very dark corner of the room, Dot found it within half an hour of my having installed it there.

I bought the mask on eBay back when Trump was babbling about how we were at 5 cases of covid-19 and pretty soon we'd be down zero. It arrived here yesterday from my South American home-away-from-home, La Ciudad Blanca, the charming old city of Arequipa in southwestern Peru.

I don't know enough about this genre to date it, but it has seen considerable use. It shows signs of wear. The tin used to make the mask was taken from an old tin container. Parts of the text that used to be on the outside of the container can be seen on the interior. It is intricately crafted and painted and marvelously asymmetrical. The orange hair is attached to a cap and train fashioned from a lightweight fabric.

The method used to fasten the hair to the textile is reminiscent of ancient techniques I studied during my three South American winters at an archaeological field school not far from Arequipa. Strands of horsehair are looped over twin cords. In turn, the cord of horsehair is attached horizontally to the fabric about 4 inches apart.

The mask was used in the diablada puneña. According to Wikipedia:

Diablada puneña is a variation of the dance known as diablada performed in the region of Puno, Peru. The origin of this dance is a matter of dispute between Peru and Bolivia,[1] because both nations celebrate the Diablada with similar music, songs, and clothing.[2]

The Diablada puneña is part of an Andean theatrical repertoire that began during the Spanish colonization of South America in order to teach the local natives the precepts of Christian faith and history of the Spanish Empire. The Diablada causes a reform in the thinking of the indigenous altiplano cultures as missionaries from Spain, instilled the paradigm of good and evil, which is how the costumes of angels and demons became associated with the dance.

According to Diego Gonzáles Holguín, the missionaries taught the natives a representation of the seven deadly sins and the triumph of the angels over the demons. In Puno, this is a special dance which was recovered from the past along with the Diablada in Oruro.

History

In 1577, the Jesuits settled in Juli, Puno. During festivities, they performed theatre plays, comedies and actos sacramentales.

The Juli Jesuits taught the natives a song-dance about the seven capital sins and how the angels beat the demons, in order to indoctrinate the locals.

I saw the diablada at the University Students' Folkloric entrada (parade) in La Paz, Bolivia, on July 29, 2006. A photo of a diablada dancer appears below.

I am glad that it's still possible to buy stuff on eBay during these uncertain times.

Well there are a lot of things I am doing new this year!

I have now gone pro :-)

This was taken on Sunday many thanks to the stunning Leah Kirk for modeling while I got to grips with of camera flash and shooting on location.

some new doll sets of Tangled the Series coming soon!

The new Rapunzel doll just goes like Elena, we're going to have a sidekick set, wardrobe set and a full character deluxe set!

Something new for "big" girls. They will be available on eBay next week. I have new account on eBay and have some problems with it I hope I will deal with it on time.

I think I like doing shoes for Sybarite dolls the most, they have amazing feet and I can make really high shoes for them. I like high heels, I was wearing 12cm heels on my weeding and every party after this event. :) I was about 185cm tall :)

But next shoes will be lower. I think about flat shoes for FR 16". What do you think?

SOLD

Something new!

Around 500 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor lies a rather peculiar looking galaxy, known as the Cartwheel galaxy. It was once a normal spiral galaxy that underwent a head-on interaction with a smaller companion galaxy several million years ago, giving it its signature cartwheel appearance. But there are other curious things about this object. Something interesting is taking place in the lower left corner of the right image, captured in December 2021 with ESO’s New Technology Telescope (NTT): a supernova. The image on the left, taken in August 2014 by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) mounted on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), shows the galaxy before this supernova took place.

This event, called SN2021afdx, is a type II supernova, which occurs when a massive star reaches the end of its evolution. Supernovae can cause a star to shine brighter than its entire host galaxy and can be visible to observers for months, or even years — a blink of an eye on astronomical timescales. Supernovae are one of the reasons astronomers say we are all made of stardust: they sprinkle the surrounding space with heavy elements forged by the progenitor star, which may end up being part of later generations of stars, the planets around them and life that may exist in those planets.

Detecting and studying these unpredictable events requires international collaboration. The first time SN2021afdx was spotted was in November 2021 by the ATLAS survey, and it was then followed up by ePESSTO+, the advanced Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey for Transient Objects. ePESSTO+ is designed to study objects that are only in the night sky for very short periods of time, such as this supernova. It does this by using the EFOSC2 and SOFI instruments on the NTT, located at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile. EFOSC2 not only took this beautiful image, but also spectra that allowed the PESSTO team to identify this event as a type II supernova.

I can still hear the distinctive sounds of these old cash registers. The long metal slides of the drawer and Ka-Ching upon opening and closing.

A trio of Ponies on the Providence and Worcester Gardner Branch take 50 ethanol loads south from Gardner to Worcester MA, and eventually on to Motiva in Providence for unloading. This is the first time routing with run through power from Norfolk Southern via Pan Am Railways was used for this product. Seen here crossing Princeton Rd at Maple Spring Pond in Holden, MA

I went out this morning with my macro lens and a colour chart to try something new. Please give honest feedback I can take it :-)

With every shoot I learn something new about the process of photography. Anybody spot what I learned on this one?

this week i had so many ideas that it was hard to choose just one. this is an old edmonds cookery book that belonged to my grandmother and it was produced in 1914.

my mum had it handed down to her when my grandmother died. it has had lots of tape to keep it together.

Working with Gels

Well my order from Rosco arrived and it was time to have some fun. Working with gels is something new to me. I’ve had the standard CTO gels laying around gathering dust and that’s about all they did. Then I saw some photos some really good shooters had produced and I just had to try my hand at it.

In my studio I mainly shoot on black or white seamless and occasionally on thunder grey. I wanted to see how the gels would do on each. I found that shooting on black produces a richer saturation and can produce a more textured appearance than on white - which can produce a more pastel effect. This is not to say gels on white can’t produce gorgeous rich colours as well. It’s all in developing a subtle touch.

The biggest problem I found in shooting in such a tiny studio is of course light hitting the model when you only want it to hit the background. Barn doors and bookends can help control that but you need a lot more space to set a system like that up. I tried every configuration I could think of and finally decided if I couldn’t control it - I would embrace it.

For the photos in this eZine I worked with Daisy - a fantastic and very professional model on a black background exclusively. She knows her poses and expressions and can totally own the stage. All I had to do was manage the lighting and click the shutter.

Toward the end of the shoot I switched over to lighting the model with gels. It’s a lot more finicky getting that right and the model has to stay more in one place. I used a bounce to kick light back from the orange gel lighting her while a single blue lit the background. It’s very hit or miss and if Daisy moved too close or far from the lights it would make a big exposure difference due to depth of flash.

I found filters on the orange side worked especially well but browns didn’t. Browns tended to look metallic and not so brown. I imagine they can look brown as expected but only if turned way down. Blue filters rock as does green but reds - nah. I have my favourites picked out :-)

So that’s my story and I’m sticking it.

I've been playing with some different post-processing techniques, trying some combinations of things I don't normally do. That's the best way I learn, to experiment and play and see what comes out. I went back to some photos I took a few months ago at Antietam Battlefield and used this as a starting point.

This was a shot where I personally liked the composition but the colors and details in the original weren't all that interesting. I originally took bracketed shots (which I normally do for sunrises/sunsets), so I combined the bracketed shots but kept the compression and processing in the middle of the road. Next added a graduated filter, a bit of saturation (a tad more sat added just in the shadows) and boost of vibrance. I re-leveled the exposure then added a touch of "glow" to soften the shot w/o ruining the sharpness and finished it up with a slight vignette.

A bit more work than I usually put in on a shot and it certainly has flaws, but like I said, it's sometimes fun and educational to try things and see where you end up. You never know when you'll discover a new combination of processes that work well and it'll become something you might reuse later.

I have a friend who is a printer. The red strip is the plastic piece that the shear strikes at the bottom of the stroke when cutting paper to size. As one would expect the strips are changed frequently.

Here in this Photograph we have this Arriva Midlands VDL SB200 Wright Pulsar registered FL63DXY with the fleet number of 3790, the vehicle is seen here on its first day of Service with Oswestry depot and is one out of the 7 brand new vehicles at Oswestry being FL63DXT/U/V/W/X/Y/Z/YA (3785/86/87/88/89/90/91/92) here we see the vehicle approaching a very sunny Johnstown while working a Service 2C to Cefn Mawr.

Photographed this foal one fine day mere hours after it was born, but those pics aren't the prettiest ones, complete with umbilical cord. For this one, had spent the day in Seahouses and Howick Gardens with my Mam on her birthday, and we met this one closer to home later in the day, when this shot was taken - lovely end to a grand day out :-)x

I check her photostream often in anticipation of new uploads and I'm always really happy to see something new. but last time i discovered www.flickr.com/photos/neelgolapi/4833643850/ and i decided to copy her

i wasn't patient in front of the camera btw

Just like a tree sheds its leaves and begins again, so do we at different points in our life. Change is good, and the hope of something new, something better is what moves people to take a leap of faith... and often, it leads to wonderful outcomes...

I hope I will always have the courage to embrace change and fearlessly keep the faith whenever something new comes my way....

first and foremost, the color in all these pix is royally screwed up. there's nowhere in this house that i can get good pix at night...

so, i wanted to try something new with the lovely penny's hair. you may already know that i'm eternally dissatisfied with her hair.. she should be wispy banged but her bangs are sorta sparse and never look right to me. after seeing some amazing pix of "center part brunettes" lately (all wispy girls with their bangs pulled aside) i wanted to give it a go...

so, here she is. unfortunately, there's still a triangle of bare plastic in the center of her head... which is most obvious in the pic with the flash... argh! i just can't get it right!

Sorry for neglecting you somewhat while I’m having an an affair with Instagram 💋
