Barnes County, North Dakota

September 2020

A survivor out on the plains, ready to show off its changing colors against the grasses and sky.

Just a random phone photo while out wandering. It was a hot day for September, so bright, thus not great composition. The solo tree was and the vibrant colors were appealing to take in though. Always different to see leaves changing when it is so warm out.

Cool solo tree on angel’s landing hike, had some awesome clouds glowing behind it

This superb tree is in the fields near Crocker End, taken on my walk last week

Pacific Coast Highway in Oregon.

A bit more perspective of my closeup of the dune in Sossusvlei, Namibia that I posted earlier in the week. The iron in the sand makes such a beautiful red-orange glow at dawn and dusk. This country is a photographer's paradise and the people were wonderful and welcoming. 20230618SossisvlaiSunset1

Tree growing alone in the ruins of Machu Picchu

Perfect conditions for this Black and White image which I'd thought about for a while. The use of the Avon as a leading line into the solo tree, the little bridge adds interest, and the hint of what's "behind the scene" with the silhouette of the trees in the background is all intended.

"Alone yet resilient, the tree watches the sun's evening glow."

In the evening's golden glow,

A lone tree stands tall and slow.

Silhouetted 'gainst the fiery sky,

It whispers tales as the sun bids goodbye.

Branches reaching, embracing light's retreat,

In solitude, its beauty's sweet.

As colors dance in the fading light,

The tree stands strong, a serene sight.

With each passing moment, a silent ode,

To nature's grace, to time's abode.

In the quiet dusk, a soul finds peace,

Beneath the canopy of the lone tree's release.

So let the sunset paint the sky,

In hues of warmth, in hues that fly.

And let the solo tree, steadfast and free,

Be a beacon of strength for you and me.

Enhanced by AI but not a digital art

Hyden, Western Australia This amazing natural rock formation is shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave, the wave is 15m high and around 110m long. It forms the north side of a solitary hill, which is known as Hyden Rock

A Solo Tree Portrait - one of my favourite subjects.

-10°C

Couldn't resist to get up at sunrise and capture this field which I've driven past many times en route to get my daughter at college.

(Technical info, 3-shot pano)

After this capture, I had the great fortune to meet a very friendly farmer who invited me onto his farm and "stay as long as I wanted" with my camera. This was magic to my ears (and eyes), and to anyone who is beckoned to the country! I will be posting more of those images in the coming days :)

Catches the good images

Sur la route de Sainte Marie aux Mines

Simple landscape scene a short walk from home... on a cloudy day, small breaks created a well positioned streak pointing at the solo tree.

The stripes, the colour, it has a real look of Tartan - the single tree gives us something to like in the top half of the image

Solo tree on the hill, I hear you clearly.

This magnificent tree lives on it's own on a remote hill near Brungle Creek, Tumut, NSW, Australia.

At sunset it comes out to play in the early hues of the evening waiting for it's starry friends.

So still and serene, though a presence I could not ignore.

Taken a couple of days ago during an Extreme Thunderstorm Watch. I was looking for the little red bison calves but there were no bison in sight. Since I was there I thought I should at least come away with something. I like this tree that is in the middle of a field by itself, without shelter from others. I am not sure why it leans as it does. I could be wind or being in the bison loop at Elk Island National Park, possibly Bison used it at a scratching post when it was younger. Regardless I do find the lean interesting.

Although the sky was brewing light was changing quickly as the sun would do some poking through between the clouds. I waited until the sun was out on the tree. Having only my 100-400 with me I tried my best to get as much of the the leafy part of the tree against the darkest cloud. A wider angle lens would have worked better, but made the best of what I had to work with.

I may have processed to enhance the darkness of the clouds, but they were very dark. Still no lightning to be heard so I was good.

Last weekend when the snow fell, oh my goodness, what a chance to see my local area with a new perspective - the chance to find minimal compositions, to take advantage of contrast, colours, to go minimal. I took this in the middle of a snow storm - the hedge, the solo tree, simple composition - I just love it.

Currently looking after a Doggie in Brașov, Romania. Spotted this tree while out walking her and thought it may make a good image at sunset. Taken with the Canon 5D4 and their 50mm 1.4 lens.

Failed sunrise shot of Kauritutahi Island. Overcast skies aren't helpful.

Cannot beat a bit of sunshine, a solo tree in silhouette, a sheep with her two lambs, and a bit of cloud action and light spots all in one image :-)
