Back in 1974 us kids thought this was really something...a solar cell for sale at Radio Shack! Now they're everywhere and nobody's impressed, which is how it goes with "gee whiz" technology.

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington or D.C., is the capital of the United States. Founded after the American Revolution as the seat of government of the newly independent country, Washington was named after George Washington, first President of the United States and Founding Father. As the seat of the United States federal government and several international organizations, Washington is an important world political capital. The city is also one of the most visited cities in the world, with more than 20 million tourists annually.
The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the U.S. Congress, and the District is therefore not a part of any state. The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. The City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia; in 1871, it created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District.
Washington had an estimated population of 702,455 as of July 2018, making it the 20th most populous city in the United States. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's daytime population to more than one million during the workweek. Washington's metropolitan area, the country's sixth largest, had a 2017 estimated population of 6.2 million residents.
All three branches of the U.S. federal government are centered in the District: Congress (legislative), president (executive), and the U.S. Supreme Court (judicial). Washington is home to many national monuments, and museums, primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 177 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit, lobbying groups, and professional associations, including the World Bank Group, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization of American States, AARP, the National Geographic Society, the Human Rights Campaign, the International Finance Corporation, and the American Red Cross.
A locally elected mayor and a 13‑member council have governed the District since 1973. However, Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large congressional delegate to the House of Representatives, but the District has no representation in the Senate. The District receives three electoral votes in presidential elections as permitted by the Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961.

The National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, also called the NASM, is a museum in Washington, D.C.. It was established in 1946 as the National Air Museum and opened its main building on the National Mall near L'Enfant Plaza in 1976. In 2016, the museum saw approximately 7.5 million visitors, making it the third most visited museum in the world, and the most visited museum in the United States. The museum contains the Apollo 11 command module, the Friendship 7 capsule which was flown by John Glenn, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, the Bell X-1 which broke the sound barrier, and the Wright brothers' plane near the entrance.
The National Air and Space Museum is a center for research into the history and science of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. Almost all space and aircraft on display are originals or the original backup craft. It operates an annex, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, at Dulles International Airport, which opened in 2003 and itself encompasses 760,000 square feet (71,000 m2). The museum currently conducts restoration of its collection at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland, while steadily moving such restoration and archival activities into the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar, a part of the Udvar-Hazy annex facilities as of 2014.
Arizona Public Service (APS) has become the first utility in the nation to deploy and control advanced solar technology remotely.
A vertical tower with solar panels (solar cells) on all four sides may seem strange as most sunlight comes from south.
But firstly: The daylight, even in cloudy conditions, makes the solar cells on all sides produce electicity.
And secondly: In northern countries the sun is low in the sky half of the year and then a vertical surface is struck by more sunlight.
And thirdly: This small tower has around 20 times bigger solar cell area than a horizontal solar cell would have on the foundation!
In the background to the right you can see a part of the Server Hall - a wooden climate-positive building that stores carbon dioxide. And all covered in solar cells!

PlusEnergy homes produce more energy than they consume. All of the houses in this neighbourhood have large photovoltaic roofs - parts of them are seen to the right.
The north side of the terraced houses are seen to the left. They have small windows in order to reduce energy losses. The building in the background is the service center with the parking garage underneath.

This is my DIY motion sensor module hanging on the LCD screen on the back of my Sony A6000 camera. The camera itself is mounted on a tripod.
A single BPW34 photodiode is used as Solarcell and is mounted on a piece of black EPS ( expanded polystyrene ) material. This material was recovered from a small piece out of a food packaging platter.
The detector simply hangs on the LCD screen with the help of an U-shaped piece of (orange) polycarbonate or polyester sheet. The LCD screen is moved a bit away from its final position, so the detector part can be installed and removed in a couple of seconds.
Connected to the analog input of a 12F675 PIC device which is loaded with a modified version of my ArnoCam program it can detect motion and fires the shutter via the remote shutter input of the camera by using a 3.5 mm mono plug to a 2.5 mm stereo plug adapter.
As power supply 4 X AAA size 800 mAh NiMh 1.2 Volt batteries are used. Power consumption is about 2 mA on 5 Volt so battery life is more as 400 hours.
Its reaction speed is about 25 milliseconds and can not be compared with my ArnoSync, which is only a couple of milliseconds, but it's usefull to detect and photograph some moving objects automatically.
The total shutter lag - from motion detection to fully open shutter is about 42 milliseconds.
Complete set of ArnoMotion hardware.
Usama asked me to clean some slides for tomorrow, and I figured if I am going to stay late anyways for myself, I might as well finish up all the the already cut up slides so somebody won't have to do them at some later day... 275 slides later I am done.
This picture shoes them in the petri dishes, and with some left in the cleaning holder. You can also see a nice little collection of various chemicals in spray bottles. The other obvious piece to this puzzle is my hand in a nice green glove giving the thumbs up!
