William Bryan House 1901
3 Minnesota Street
The home of William Bryan, an owner of Bryan Manufacturing Company, was conveniently located opposite his business on the property now occupied by Sobeys. William was a warden of All Saints’ Anglican Church and a representative of the Board of Education. Lumber businesses were prone to fire and Bryan Manufacturing suffered several setbacks due to fire. In the 1960s, with the influx of large franchises such as Beaver Lumber, it became clear that the company would be unable to compete at this level. The Bryan Manufacturing property remained vacant for several years and the buildings were finally demolished in 1983.

So my dog was trying her hardest to get my attention when I was playing with the babies. This pose worked. I ran for my camera. They all look so cute.
*summer of 2010 this photo was featured on The Bonnie Hunt show. We didn't even know about it until someone recognized the twins and mentioned the show. Then we went to the show's website to find the clip. Pretty cool if you ask me.

A highlight of fall in Waterdown Village is the annual Scarecrow Walk, starting in this eighth year on October 11 and running right until Hallowe’en.
“Once again, our local businesses and community partners will display uniquely decorated scarecrows, animating our streetscape and giving people of all ages more than 130 reasons to Walk Waterdown,” exclaimed Waterdown Village BIA Board of Management Chair, Amanda Groves.
She added, “The Scarecrow Walk has fast become a signature event for the community. Clues featuring mugshots of favourite monsters will be placed on 20 randomly selected scarecrows for scavengers to find for a chance to win shopping spree prizes. You can discover new businesses, take selfies with your favourite scarecrow entries, and test your detective skills to find all 130+ scarecrows and all 20 clues, for a wonderful day out for the whole family.”

Installation by Mi'kmaq Artist Ursula Johnson, 2017 Sobey Art Award Winner, UofT Art Gallery, Toronto, Ontario
Oh, those ears. I love my buddy. She is such a well behaved doggie. She wakes me up if I sleep in too late. She lets me know when WE need to take a walk and she vacuums any spilled crumbs in the kitchen. Sobey, the amazing Welsh Corgi.
"The makeover project was completed with funding assistance from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Foundation, Sobeys Inc. and Giants of Africa, the organization that (Masai) Ujiri founded to bring basketball to different communities." - CBC
I loved this sunrise at the end of October. It had rained, and the sunrise turned the whole world pink.
Excerpt from artsbrookfield.com:
Suspended in the Allen Lambert Galleria, Bennett’s site-specific installation intersects his Mi’kmaq ancestral and contemporary traditions. In particular, he draws on the Mi’kmaq petroglyph which depicts the Milky Way.
Historical references to the land, the sky and our galaxy are illuminated by Bennett’s handling of color, both traditional and pop, his interpretation of Mi’kmaq quillwork patterns and motifs and the use of contemporary materials. For example, Bennett reimagines reflective vinyl on aluminum typically associated with road signs – to evoke cultural markers of the past.
The title Tepkik, a Mi’kmaq word for night, reflects on when we can visually see our place in the galaxy – bringing the stars and stories of our galaxy inot viw at any time of day.
Jordan Bennett, a multi-disciplinary visual artist, is shortlisted for the 2018 Sobey Art Award. He has participated in over 75 group and solo exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Bennett calls Nova Scotia home.

Artist Statement:
Manga Ormolu enters the dialogue on contemporary culture, technology, and globalization through a fabricated relationship between ceramic tradition (using the form of Chinese Ming dynasty vessels) and techno-Pop Art. The futuristic update of the Ming vessels in this series recalls 18th century French gilded ormolu, where historic Chinese vessels were transformed into curiosity pieces for aristocrats. But here, robotic prosthetics inspired by anime (Japanese animation) and manga (the beloved comics and picture novels of Japan) subvert elitism with the accessibility of popular culture.

Sobey's Canada bought Canada Safeway (and many other smaller grocers) and became the second largest food retailer in this country, after Loblaw's, with sales in excess of 31 billion dollars annually. Today, we drove past Stellarton, where they've had their head office from the start.
The theme for this week is "Vintage Vibe". I just happened to walk past this vintage clothes shop in Exeter... perfect!
In the midst of a string of a solid week of nice weather, I chose today to follow the CBNS. With reduced service due to COVID-19, a crew taxi's down from Stellarton to run to Valley and back a couple days a week. Unfortunately, I arrived in Truro just as the crew of 305 was returning to the yard, having finished switching Sproule Lumber. I figured I'd try my luck and pressed on the extra half hour for Stellarton. 523's crew had just returned to the yard from Superior Propane in Trenton, so that was strike two. However, the same crew that was switching in Truro, had returned to Stellarton and were getting on the road power to switch Nova Scotia Power. After tying onto coal loads in New Glasgow Siding, a pair of SD40-2s pull the cars out to shove down the main and eventually into NSP in Trenton. The building in the background to the left of the train is Big 8 Bottling, part of the Sobey's franchise.
