First Official Soapbox Competition in Bulgaira

One of my favorite Summer events. Bigger crowd this year... and more crashes. Lighting was difficult with the sunshine, but I liked how the dappled light on the road and in the trees came out on this one.

Storms were brewing on this Saturday. One offshore, which justified the presence of UP 602 and 600 departing JR Davis Yard in Roseville for the Sierra slopes. The other, was five minutes away.

Roseville was filled with railfans and foamers, awaiting the presence of UP 4141, the George Bush locomotive. An hour earlier, the 4141 arrived at the yard. Many railfans gathered along the route to catch this rare sight. I chased the train with fellow flickr-ite Jamie West, starting at Merced, 100 miles south of Roseville. While most behaved, there were some bonehead foamers who chose to trespass at Elvas Junction, and stage shots dangerously close to passing trains at the north edge of the American River Bridge.

The most egregious offense occurred five minutes after the snow geeps passed. One of the foamers announced to the crowd that the 4141 was next to the yard office. Within seconds, foamers, parents, all cleared the platform, and stormed out of the parking lot. We elected to follow the group at a safe distance. If the 4141 was there, we would have got shots fro Atkinson Street. As we approached, the entire convoy pulled into the yard office parking lot. An area that 's off limits to individuals without RR business, and is clearly marked as private property. As we returned to the depot, the yard channel was buzzing with reports of foamers walking on active yard tracks, trying to capture the 4141.

What happened yesterday was an embarrassment to our hobby. It's the reason why I don't go to train meets. It's the reason why I'm very selective with who I go trainwatching with. Who wants to deal with frothing lunatics who have zero regard for safety, no respect for the railroad or the employees, and feel an overwhelming sense of entitlement. Trainwatching is a privilege, not a right.

Getting off my soapbox now.

This is an entry for the “I Need A Car” contest in the Gotham City War group. The task was to build a vehicle for a villain from Gotham City—since everyone drives in a crowded city!

More importantly though, I will be leaving my character and position as Penguin in the upcoming round 3 of GCW, and I’ll be officially moving into the position, beginning now, as the new Prince of Crime, the Joker! Henceforth, with my new Joker position, I decided to make a nice clown themed entry into the contest (Though I doubt I’ll be allowed to win due to my villain yet moderator position); plus building another Penguin car would be boring.

Any who, this is Joker’s soapbox car for the annual Kiddie Kar Race in Gotham held every year—though as of late it’s more or less just turned into another homicidal massacre affair. Build using a large barrel, misshapen orange wheels, crazy colors, and driven by an even crazier driver, this soapbox is bound to win—or at the least kill a few bystanders! Everybody wins!

and all the men and women merely players

they have their exits and their entrances

and one man in his time plays many parts

Standing on the corner at the motorcycle rally...

For Cliche Saturday. Have a great weekend! : )

Our local firebrigade at Doerfl (Austria) organized a soapbox car race last weekend. A friend of mine joined in ... (I like his glasses ...)

This view of my entry into the “I Need A Car” contest for the Gotham City War Group, shows that inside the large purple barrel of the Soapbox is a giant engine.

Joker “won” the annual Kiddie Kar Soapbox Race in Robbinson Park, Gotham City by a landslide today—well mostly by sliding over and crushing the other contestants. Fatalities were lower than last year’s event, but serious injury and maiming was up 20%. Judges were neither impressed nor amused; but when at gun point they did award the trophy to the clown prince of crime. Immediately after the race ending though, the Boy Wonder Robin; who raced in the red and green “Bird 1”; yelled foul claiming that the Joker’s soapbox was in fact not a soapbox at all as it was not powered by gravity, but by an old plane engine. Unfortunately due to the Joker’s ride not actually being a soapbox and that it was indeed powered by an engine, the homicidal clown was easily able to escape capture by the Batman and Robin; due to the fact they were all at the bottom of the racing hill and the hero’s cars no longer had gravity to move.

and he actually completed the run!

A Bernal Heights tradition, the fearless racers wind their way down a death-defying mountain race course that rises above urban San Francisco.

The Farnham Soapbox race became one of the most highly-anticipated events in town in 2019. On Sunday August 18th 50 teams hurtled down Castle Street. The idea to hold a soapbox derby originally came from, committee member Tony Dougherty’s son Tyla.

Then aged seven, Tony said his son was “absolutely obsessed” with soapbox racing on TV” and had asked his dad to attend a real soapbox race. Despite missing the event in Portishead, Tony took to Farnham Rants, posting “Castle Street was wasted” and that the community should hold a soapbox event there. Tony said his comments were “a bit tongue in cheek” and gave no real thought about a soapbox derby actually happening. Despite doubts, the post had gained many positive comments.

As the team wanted the event to take place on a major street in Farnham, a lot of preparation was needed. Closing a major town-centre road – especially one that is already closed a number of times each year – is not easy or straightforward. The committee visited residents and businesses in Castle Street following a successful application to Surrey County Council to have the road closed.

The race took place on Castle Street in Farnham on Sunday 18th August, and was held in aid of local charity Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care, which provides supportive and end of life care for patients and families who are living with an advanced or terminal illness, such as cancer. Each soapbox was built by a local group or business, and all were unpowered, relying purely on gravity and a sharp shove off the starting line to move. They gained speed along the route, steering their way through chicanes, gaining height over ramps and trying not to crash! It was a close call (and with a change in the course during lunch) there were two winners; Carlin Motorsport from the morning session and Hoopers and Tutors flying white coats from the afternoon session.

I'm in the mood for this melancholic soapbox opera.

Please. Do not post any group invitations or blinking icons or a commercial for "your most interesting photo's on flickriver" in your comment. I am old enough to make a decision which photo I want to take a look at. Your words will be the greatest honour.

If you are lost for the words - a simple fave will be pleasure...

Just kidding.

Are you giggling? ;-))
