At left the doomsayer sits resignedly on his soapbox foretelling the end of civilisation as we know it. In the centre, the politician stands on his soapbox extolling how he will solve every problem in the world and beyond, and how his opponent can't do that. At right is the cheesy salesman using his soapbox to, surprisingly, sell soap.
We're Here looks at Soap today and possibly soapboxes as well, but I did add some soap to cover myself just in case!
These are the product shelves in my office. They don't stay stocked and organized like this for long!
After World War II, Carris restarted tram building to a new design, created with a view to saving weight. The new cars were much squarer and rather bus-like in appearance.
741 was one of the first batch, which while built to the modern outline did at least use traditional materials. Later ones made much greater use of aluminium and fibreglass and dispensed with internal bulkheads. 506, one of the later ones, is also in the collection.
In true Lisbon fashion, when 741 was withdrawn bits of it were recycled - its postwar truck and electrics were topped off with a reconditioned standard car body and went back into service! However 'soapbox' 741 wasn't quite dead yet - the redundant body was in due course re-trucked and restored for the museum.
Alongside 741 is 802, one of ten rather substantial and elegant bogie cars built in the late-1930s and early-1940s.

Another one I like from the Portland Soapbox Derby of '06... not as funny as a speeding cubicle but I really enjoy the (vague) expression and the feeling of speed in this one.
A Bernal Heights tradition, the fearless racers wind their way down a death-defying mountain race course that rises above urban San Francisco.
The Dunwoody Soap Box Derby is open to boys and girls ages 8-17 who reside in DeKalb, Gwinnett, Rockdale, Clayton or Henry County.
The race is presented by the Kiwanis Club of Dunwoody. The inaugural race of 2008 was run as a fun non-sanctioned test of car and driver. In 2009 “Stock” and “Super Stock” divisions will compete in head-to-head competition. The stock division is for boys and girls ages 8-13. The Super Stock Division is for boys and girls ages 10-17.
The winner of the Stock and Super Stock division will go on to compete in the National Championship race and week-long festivities held in Akron, Ohio!

Tell your friends, but don't tell the fuzz.
I am on my soapbox this morning. Every morning when I get to my local busstop this is what I encounter - the students of a local academy treating it like their private smoking lounge, while passengers (some elderly) have to stand in the rain waiting for their busses. Even worse if that when they are finished with a cigarette they throw the still burning stubs on the sidewalk (you can clearly see the littered sidewalk)
This morning I was threatened with "my dad's a lawyer" when I took this shot - well all I can say is "bring it on!!"
When I told them I know my rights as a photographer I was challenged with "so why do you take photos on a phone!!" - so there you are - you can't be a photographer if you take photo's on your phone (someone should tell 'bloke')
The manager of the Academy was very helpfull when I called this morning - who knows - tomorrow morning I will hopefully be able to post an image of actual bus passengers at the busstop...
