One of their favourite places to play is up on a huge hard-packed snowdrift. It's a fun perspective for photos too!
January in Michigan: The sounds of nature are silent except for the blowing wind. A layer of snow and ice covers the state. Most of the wildlife has either migrated South, or gone into hibernation until Spring. Still, it's hard to resist the solitude of Winter. A trip out into the elements to photograph the sunset can be thrilling, but it's nice to return home to a warm fireplace, and a good book.

2 image HDR (+2 and -2). It appears that my HDR software overwrites the date of the original photo somehow on the final output. This photo is from March, 27th 2011.
I have wanted this shot for years. I have been here when the cattle were in this field, just not the right locations.
I know they are not all steers. I didn't look under the hood to get an exact number

more Snow on the way. we got 3 in. on 2/17, tonight another 2-4 in. and a big storm headed our way this weekend. OH Boy thank goodness for a Ford F250 4X4, a Snow blower and 15 cords of fire wood, and another 10 cords out in the back wood shed....... OH and Record setting cold weather on the way. You just gotta love New England. Thank goodness I grew up in Northern Wisconsin.
A challenge to try and show the grains of fine snow blowing as it was in a biting wind.
I hope we get at least some snow again this year. I love it!
Still a few days yet but hope everyone has a super duper Christmas :)))))
Snapped some photos of a friend of mine enjoying his Lamborghini Gallardo in the first decent snow fall we've had in the Chicagoland area this winter. More soon!

Looking back at this scene brings sharp memories of the freezing conditions I endured to catch sunrise atop this windswept knoll. I still remember fiddling with my camera with cold numb hands, shivering despite wearing multiple layers, feeling nauseated from the lack of sleep the prior night, and most importantly, of being disappointed after the predicted sunrise did not pan out.
Sometimes these are part and parcel of the experience of the photographer. Even after putting the best effort into getting everything right, it is impossible to predict factors that lie beyond the photographer's control. I have faced many such disappointments, but persevere and shoot despite that.
And on this day, I was glad I continued shooting even after the sunrise didn't pan out, because I allowed me to enjoy the peaceful winter solitude for just a little bit longer.

For days, I watched this snowdrift across the street from my kitchen window. This became the lead in to a gouache painting: Snowdrift on porch roof. Cedar Falls, Iowa, January 29, 2016
The snow drifts that were created in yesterday's snow storm are huge, and really nice to look at. Not so much to drive through though! This one formed in our back yard along the fence line.
In early February, we had snow and winds which, as usual, created a huge drift across the driveway in front of our house. It had already been cleared twice, but had rapidly filled in again as the wind continued to blow. This time, the third, was successful, and we were finally able to get our truck out of the garage and go to town!
This was taken right in front of our garage, and our neighbour's son, Evan, had just arrived to start digging. (17-02-05-6340)

All of our snow has been gone for a few days now, melted by mild days and washed away by heavy rains. Rather amazing drifts often form on our small deck, which we don't bother to clear any more.
On Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford, B.C., an early morning panoramic view of very dirty snowdrift remnants, flooded fields and reflections on the last day of 2022. (22-12-31-6262)
Snowdrift River, near Lutsel K'e NT 25 Mar 2025. This place is jumping with ciscoe in the spring, gave the place its Dene name.
Northwest winds created snowdrifts alongside Rt. 30 just west of Shabbona, Illinois. The textures in the snow really caught my eye when we turned the corner to go shoot down by the railroad tracks just to the right of this location. When we were done, we came back to this spot and braved the cold wind to get a few shots before the setting sun went behind a bank of clouds.
I go the same places quite often. I usually stop & shoot the same location every time. Trying something different on Snowdrift Ridge today.
Of course, I shot the usual locations as well.

Got lucky & found some color with white Snowdrift i the background.
Too bad the white stuff disappeared so quickly.
...combined. The coyotes were playing on the drifts last night, note the tracks lower right hand corner.
