Selkie is the oldest seal the Zoo has, around 40 if I remember right. She started out actually working for the Navy (yes, an actual Navy seal!) and was trained to use screwdrivers & other tools to fix machines for them. Her eyes look funny because she's blind.
Natalie and I made a last-minute decision to visit the National Zoo today. It was a good choice :). We made dinner (to eat when we returned) and got on the metro at like 5pm. From the metro, we walked to the zoo. We wandered around and looked at all the animals for about an hour. Unfortunately, a lot of the animals had already gone to bed for the night :-/. On the plus side- most people were leaving as we were entering, so we managed to dodge most crowds.
We came back and had shrimp for dinner. Then we Took Samson to the batting cage.
I have never seen one of them on the tower before (let alone crossing the "O-Line"). This was a first.
Shot through wire fence, first time I have taken photos of this animal, since it once escaped its exhibit...

One of the cubs attempted to approach the male; the resultant roar was quite impressive. Children screamed.
