The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca, literally "black and white cat-foot", A大熊猫, dà xióng māo, literally "big bear cat") is a large, distinctive looking black and white bear native to mountain ranges in south Central China, most notably the Sichuan province. As a result of farming, deforestation and other development, the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived and is currently categorized as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat at the Smithsonian National Zoo is a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor exhibit designed to replicate the pandas' natural habitat in China. The zoo's pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, have lived there, on lan from the China Wildlife Conservation Association, since 2000. Their first male cub, Tai Shan, was born in 2005 and returned to China in 2010. Their first female cub, Bao Bao, was born in 2013, and then their second male cub, Being Bei, followed in 2015. The first Giant pandas arrived at the National Zoo as a gift by the government of China following President Richard Nixon's 1972 visit.

The Gathering, a sculptural group of seven life-size chimps, was designed by sculptor around 2002. The groupp includes seven distinct chimpanzee types, arranged as such to invite a viewer into the group—The Observer, a contemplative male; the Alpha-Male, a powerful and dynamic leader; The Youth, young child tentatively testing his new world; The Explorer, a bold adult on the verge of discovery; the Matriarch, an attentive and aging mother; The Ally, a cooperative and willing partner; and The Servant, a loyal follower.

As of December 7, Bei Bei weighed about 16 pounds (7.32 kg). Even though he's grown exponentially over the last few months, he still won't be eating bamboo for a while. However, he has started to mouth it, which is typical of a cub his age.
Bei Bei's teeth are continuing to come in, but we're not sure if he experiences teething the way human babies do. When we hand-raised our sloth bear cub Remi, we noticed that she experienced discomfort when her teeth were coming in. Since keepers do not have constant, direct contact with Bei Bei, it is hard to definitively tell if he is experiencing something similar.
During the day when keepers are present, we've noticed that Mei Xiang spends most of the day separate from Bei Bei. This is natural and a good indication of his increasing independence. Keepers will begin training Bei Bei soon with simple behaviors that will aid in basic husbandry, specifically name recognition and touching a target.
The David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat has been closed to the public since Aug. 20 to provide quiet, and will remain closed until Bei Bei's public debut on January 16. Prior to the debut, you can see Bei Bei on the panda cam, sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund.
