We made sure we did not step on, or kebab with the walking poles!

there were 15 to 20 paper wasps on this nest during summer .. there are only two wasps left now .. they die off as winter approaches and the queen lays no more eggs so the community is not replaced .. a few survive over winter by hibernating, and a queen starts a new nest in the next spring ..

this is the underside of the nest where the queen would have laid the eggs during the warmer months .. the larvae grow in there, and the adult wasps catch caterpillars to feed the larvae .. the workers, which are mostly female, live on flower nectar ..

Always Happy With the Smallest of things

This is the smallest LED Menorah at our house.

A boy and a dog. So small today but maybe great friends for life.

"snips and snails and puppy dog tails, that's what boys are made of"

I have many shelves I call “small things shelves.” Dracula has been working tirelessly to add all of our found on the ground, or in the bottoms of dusty cardboard boxes at flea markets, or corners of antique stores. I think this was the last bag of things so hopefully on a good light day I’ll switch out lenses so I can get a little closer and snap some pictures of the collection of tiny little things.

i have two things which yu can relate your slf . .!!

#1 in a series and my photo for today.

These are the remnants of my Vibe magazine collection. Curiously enough, this is all that survived my last apartment move (at least these are what are in the boxes that I've opened). As you can see these remnants are all eye candy. You have my word that the music reporting was as interesting as the covers. The Maxwell, D'Angelo and Erykah Badu issues were fabulous as was the Chris Rock piece. As regards eye candy the two Toni Braxton issues are collectors items, Toni, Toni Toni! was the title of the middle one. The Foxy Brown, Eve, J. Lo and the two Mary J. Blige pieces were a mixed bag, the music reporting was not as incisive but there was a focus on the culture. The Beyoncé and TLC issues were elegiac while the R. Kelly and Lil Kim bits were pure scandal showcasing the eternal struggle between the sacred and the profane in the music that I love. But that was then, this is now; now there is only eye candy. Thus my homage to the end of an era and my boycott of the Nine Dollar Vibe.

Sometimes you have to look harder to finde tiny things. in this case I heared some rustling in the hedge and found a small squirrel. I quickly change to the 70-200 and got this shot after a while of wtaching. Wildlife pure :D

mother bird, found dead egg. Need I explain?

For a manager at T-Mobile who is very patriotic about being from Cornwall! I'd have loved to have included the Cornwall flag too, but just didn't the time to add it in! This is a 8" and 6" chocolate sponge, filled with vanilla orange buttercream, and crumb-coated in chocolate ganache buttercream! Totally edible, seashells are made from a 50:50 sugarpaste/gumpaste mix.

Credit to Betty's Sugar Dreams for the brilliant original 'seaside' design cake - I was totally inspired by it, and also by SmallThings Iced who built a sandcastle cake.

always appreciate the small things in life

I'm trying a different colour scheme this year :) The snow flakes are made of different envelopes (from the bank, promotional mail, etc.) The light blue and gray colours are from the pattern inside of these envelopes.

See notes for where the other decorations came from.

Found at the Big Spring. Because of the dry conditions there is less of this growing this year.

Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it ~ Groucho Marx

Defrost doesn't do any good I'm sure.

It is easy to see a place and move on to the next item on the itinerary, but these experiences can be fleeting and not register on the subconscious. One of my goals being overseas this summer as part of the UW in Scotland cohort was to take the time to be fully present in the places that I visited. To support this goal I took many, many pictures during my 18-day trip. Many of the photos were of small details of what I called “textures” on my social media posts documenting my travels. These textures were moments that captured an essence of a location or an ephemeral feeling that I may have missed if I hadn’t been looking. In this photo of a sculpture in the gardens at Abbotsford, I was only able to see it because I stopped and turned around to look at the sculpture from another angle. This sums up my experience of being abroad. Take the time to be present, to “see” from multiple perspectives. You don’t know what you might bring home with you. The photos I took all have deeper meaning to me because I was fully present when taking them.
