The path through the forest ended due to thick mud from all the rain in early-mid summer. Before turning around I decided to look for frogs. I didn't see a frog, but I found this teeny tiny mushroom.

A frozen water drop that I just happened to see. I sometimes suffer from tunnel vision, glad I didn't on this shot.

It's the small things that count. Yesterday I saw bubbles floating past my window in the sunshine. I couldn't see where they came from or who was blowing them but it was a happy moment in difficult times.

Fun facts about ants, an excerpt taken from Insect Library - Terro: "They are social insects, which means they live in large colonies or groups. Depending on the species, ant colonies can consist of millions of ants. ... Ant colonies also have soldier ants that protect the queen, defend the colony, gather or kill food, and attack enemy colonies in search for food and nesting space"
For me, I thought it was interesting to find out that they are pollinators too, although their flying counterparts are better at it, since they can spread the pollen longer distances. Which means they are an important factor in keeping a healthy ecosystem. This little black ant was collecting pollen from my portulaca flowers and seemed to enjoy the nectar as well.

One more for today. The last several months have been sad and strange in so many ways. I lost a good friend of 30+ years to cancer in September. Then the election campaign got so nasty. Then the election happened and I'm still adjusting to that. Anyway, I really hadn't picked up the camera or written much in months. But I'm feeling motivated again and hope to be spending more time with all of you here again. :-)

Week 27 Small Things
Shot with a Schneider Kreuznach "Componon 35 mm F 4" (enlarging) lens on a Canon EOS R5.
Just a bit of light reading - few of the books (mostly photography) which have kept me going doing lock down... just a small stack :-)
The beach has a habit of drawing attention to its larger features; cliffs, waves, skies - they tend to take centre stage.
Meanwhile, a tiny single periwinkle sits on a rock at Spoon Bay, unconcerned by any of it. Nothing urgent. Not asking to be noticed. Just there, doing its tiny, patient thing.
The longer I looked, the more I relaxed & the noise of the wider scene faded. A reminder that not everything meaningful needs to be large, dramatic, or in motion. Some things are only found when you slow down enough to see them.

I was fortunate to witness the life cycle of an Eastern Black Swallowtail Butterfly as it went from just an egg to the instars to the chrysalis and finally the rebirth to a butterfly. This is a macro of the final instar where it soon will make its chrysalis. I love the bright green & yellow colours and the cool patterns with her pudgy little feet ( I say 'her' because when she emerged from her chrysalis I could tell from her butterfly colours and patterns that it was a female).
