Another often neglected arm of service during the Battle of Britain, the volunteers of the observer corps were critical to the reporting of enemy aircraft after they crossed the coast and were no longer tracked by radar. They were often sited in inhospitable locations, like this post. Constructed of earth walls reinforces with wooden poles, corrugated sheeting and sandbags, with tarpaulin to cover the observer apparatus when the post wasn't in use. A pencil study using a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

Some cattle studies which should help me with the finished artwork of the reconstruction drawing I am working on. My little herd of William Britain's plastic cows have modelled for numerous reconstruction drawings, not least of which were historic farmsteads which I worked on in the 1990s. The models themselves are now historical objects, the present Britain's farm animals seem to me less lifelike and difficult to scale. A 17th century engraving I found in a book about the English civil war will help me "age" the animals. Drawn on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad, with Pentel 0.5mm pencil, Winsor and Newton watercolours and some fineliner pens.

The original painting (White Stone. Chintamani sign or the Horse of Happiness, 1933) is by one of my favorite artists - Nicholas Roerich. He was the patriarch of a very talented family of artists who left a lasting cultural legacy. He founded a new Buddhist school and was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He initiated the very first international pact for the protection of cultural values (aka Roerich Pact). A prolific painter, he created over 7000 paintings and is best known for his depictions of the Himalayas.

After a couple of lengthy sessions it is time to take a break. Each time I work on the abbey church I seem to return to where I started, keeping the depth of the subject in balance is all part of the fun of the challenge. Drawn with a Staedtler Graphic 0.3mm pencil, Derwent blending stump and Pentel Click eraser on A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.
Working again with widow light and trying not get blownout highlights. Which seem to work better using the spot meter in zone 7 or +2 exposure.

Mount Rose is the highest and most prominent Sierra Nevada peak in the state of Nevada.
Mount Rose Summit is the highest mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada that remains open year-round, despite its record snowfalls.

As expected the lobster pot proved a bit more difficult than the buildings. This is the second version, having rubbed out the first and started again. I think I will move onto the buildings in the background next to restore my confidence. Drawn with a Pentel P205 0.5mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

I never expected to see a Keel-billed Toucan, more so one flying in California. :) But I got lucky this year: one such exotic bird escaped captivity and for the last several months it's been hanging around some dental offices, a short drive from my house. Surprisingly, it survived through rain, hail and freezing temperatures of this historic winter. Many thanks to Mark who allowed me to use his photo for this drawing.

Lake Sylvia is a small alpine lake shaded by the slopes of Pyramid Peak, the highest point of my favorite Desolation Wilderness.

On this cool overcast January day, I did not see any alligators (including Norm, the oldest and biggest) nor any of the loud and frenetic shorebird nesting activity that this fresh water pond rookery on Little Saint Simons Island is known for in springtime. The slowly swirling skin of chartreuse algae stole the show. January 9, 2016

Loma Prieta is one of many peaks in the greater Bay Area that have been altered by human activity. But it scores two notable distinctions: it is the highest point of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and it was the epicenter of the massive 1989 earthquake.

The last day of the Urban Sketching Symposium I was given four little wired sketchpads that participants and presenters have filled with drawings for me as a thank you for my involvement organizing the event. I was stoked!
I don't know how long it will take me, but I plan to scan the drawings and post them at pdx2010.urbansketchers.org eventually.

The sunset of a long day - more than twenty hours of driving and hiking highpoints in three counties. Good old days. Nearby Adams Peak is the northernmost peak on the Sierra Peaks Section list.

This definitely isn't my normal style, but I really do love this picture, probably because I found the moment so hilarious. As this guy was drawing, the bird would hop after him and peck at his pen and paper. I guess he just wanted to make sure the artist truly captured his beauty. The bird went on to peck the inside of my lens for about 5 minutes straight. There were a few other photographers around, so it became quite the photoshoot.

Gergeti Trinity Church is a popular name for Holy Trinity Church near the village of Stepantsminda in Georgia. The church is situated on the right bank of the river Chkheri, at an elevation of 2170 meters (7120 feet), under Mount Kazbek.
