I slowed down a bit over the summer. I'm trying to get back to mountain hiking and have started playing football again after a decade(s)-long hiatus. However, after pulling a hamstring, I was presented with an opportunity to use my pencils. I misplaced my avian sketchbook, so I had the chance to draw something meaningful instead: another study after Nicholas Roerich's "Sancta" series, where all the titles start with "And we are..."

The first time I walked along the streets of Venice I was quickly reminded of Sargent's painting with a woman wearing a shawl. And it felt exactly the same as the first time I saw that painting as a child.

All of these lines across my face

Tell you the story of who I am

So many stories of where I've been

And how I got to where I am

But these stories don't mean anything

When you've got no one to tell them to

It's true... I was made for you

During the Second World War elephants were used at the Royal Naval Air Station Putalam, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to haul aircraft and fuel browsers around the airfield. I came across this picture in the book "Swordfish at War" by W A Harrison and thought it would make a good companion sketch to one I had drawn a while ago, also showing an elephant at work, pulling a Vought Corsair. According to the picture caption in the book, the Fairey Swordfish was from 810 or 829 squadrons embarked on HMS Illustrious, which visited the base in 1942. As the photograph also shows some Corsairs, however, it is more likely to date from 1943. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

Now it is the turn of the 12th century doorway mouldings to cause me problems. Having some bright sunshine on most of the stonework doesn't help. I think it is time to put this drawing to one side and look at the details fresh later. I don't like erasing things too much bit pencil drawing does allow a bit of leeway for correcting mistakes. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

Working my way up and along the venerable old tree. The reference I am using shows the trunk mostly as a mass of dark tone with hunts of how the broughs grow out it. I am using some sketches of trees in my sketchbooks to add more interesting textures. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil and Tombow Mono zero eraser in an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

The Little Yorkshire Candle Shop. Almost done, just a bit more work on the road and a general over view of all the tonal values, then it will be time to ask my Critical Friend if it is finished. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil on A4 cartridge paper sketchpad, my own references.

I bought a new sketchpad.

I'm starting over.

Gradually extending the drawing to include a few more houses and more sea wall. At this stage it is a case of checking the measurements of each component and redrawing of nessecary before putting in any detail. Drawn with a Pentel 0.5mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

Lake Seliger is a large system of linked lakes featuring many small islands and which is surrounded by pine forests and fields. It is considered one of the true nature's gems of Russia and a cultural center of Russia with many churches and monasteries located in proximity of each other. It is a place of pilgrimage for devoted Russian Orthodox Christians. In recent years the lake's shores became not only a desired real estate, but also a selected location for pro-Putin youth camps.

Taking a pause. It looks like the buildings are done. Now to figure out what is happening in the foreground, plenty of vegetation to figure out though what looks simple in the reference is likely to be far more involved in detail. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil and Tombow Mono zero eraser in an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

A detail of the sea wall and slipway by Staithes Beck. Staithes was once a centre of ship and boat building. It also supported a large fishing fleet. Today there are still some fishermen but the ship building declined rapidly as the industry increasingly moved to steel ships. Modern sea defences have altered the beckside considerably in recent years. Drawn with a Pentel 0.5mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad

My second take on this scene, based on a photo by Pixabay:

www.pexels.com/photo/road-amidst-bare-trees-327308/

A good bit of progress over an evening, building up the sea wall, working out some of the different textures. There is is plenty of work of do, with some different stonework to draw and variations in concrete. I might do this before moving onto some more houses and interesting bits and pieces to the right of the drawing. Drawn with a Pentel 0.5mm pencil on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

I was filmed for a TV programme drawing this. They filmed a time lapse of the sketch. To keep the sketchpad still, I was resting it on a stool and it was very uncomfortable and it’s a bit rushed and inaccurate. I hope the viewers don’t notice.

Yesterday was a busy day. I took AMTRAK to Yorba Linda to attend the monthly piano meetup. We all did our recitals and it was a lot of fun. I played Mozart's second movement of Sonata No. 2 in F major, K 280 on the 2 year old ESTONIA grand piano and it felt so good I took advantage of the break and tried out my repetoire. Then I got back on the train and as I arrived at Union Station I got a text from Yutaka San regarding the night's Kontrapunktus baroque performance at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels just a stone throw away. So I caught a Lyft ride and got to see the concert. I had originally forgotten all about this and was about to go to Kushi Shabu for dinner. So after the concert, I walked to Wellercourt and had my pork shabu just before they closed. A very busy but productive day!

"Without words I am aimless, those curly g's, the upright, stand-to-attention t's, and those portly letters that prefer to sit, the o's, a's, e's and u's, where would I be without you all?"

These are a few of my notebooks and sketchpads all waiting in line for me to pluck up the courage to use them, pretty little things that they are. As you know, I'm a stationery freak and as I know, so are many of you, so drool away my lovelies!!

I've not had much time for Flickr in the past couple of days and have fallen terribly behind in my viewing/commenting. I hope to squeeze at least an hour in later to view all of the wonders you've posted. Until then, see ya!!

And how could I forget, another Kim Klassen texture used here (Celebration?) to make everything look pretty. I've only just discovered Kim's textures (I know, where have I been, eh?) and they're already becoming firm faves!

A quick pencil study of a fish preparation room. Here fish that were going to be smoked were first salted, then rinsed, before being put on skewers. From here they were hung over small fires for smoking. The sketch will enable me to add details of how this type of building was used, an important element of the commission I am working on. Pentel 0.5mm mechanical pencil on A4 sketchpad.

Another quick and loose sketch of the Bar Walls which connect the Red Tower with Walmgate Bar. This part of the city wall, which protected the Walmgate lying to the south east of the city centre, was probably rebuilt in 1858 when the Red Tower was also rebuilt. The steps carry the wall walk onto the earth rampart, the last stretch of wall and Red Tower being built on lower ground on the edge of a large pond. Drawn with a Pilot C-Tec 0.25 pen on a cartridge paper sketchpad.

A lull between commissions is getting filled with a new pencil study of a York building. I am starting with an iron gate, probably a 20th century replacement for an 18th century original. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm on an A4 cartridge paper sketchpad.

Portrait of a Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, based on a photo by Alexander Rodchenko.

Huby's Tower completed it was onto the Chapel of Nine Altars. The chapel was added onto the earlier church, creating space for nine more altars as the abbey continued to attract donations from many parts of Britain. A similar eastern arm was added to Durham cathedal but the expense of building them meant they were a rarity. Drawn with a Staedtler 0.3mm pencil on a sheet of A4 cartridge paper from a sketchpad.
