In Southern Ethiopia, near Dublock (Yabelo) the seminomadic pastoralist Borena / Borana people are known for their deep wells, with channels leading the cattle towards water and men, often singing, passing buckets of water up in a chain to the watering trough.
How Can I Keep From Singing
(Song by Enya- Hymn)
My life goes on in endless song
Above earth's lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear it's music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?
While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness 'round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?
Revelation 15:2-4 (New Living Translation)
2 I saw before me what seemed to be a glass sea mixed with fire. And on it stood all the people who had been victorious over the beast and his statue and the number representing his name. They were all holding harps that God had given them. 3 And they were singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:
“Great and marvelous are your works,
O Lord God, the Almighty.
Just and true are your ways,
O King of the nations.
4 Who will not fear you, Lord,
and glorify your name?
For you alone are holy.
All nations will come and worship before you,
for your righteous deeds have been revealed.”
This Saturday, I left the house early to go to class in Lynchburg,
so that I would have an opportunity to do my daily devotions,
take some photos and go to the flea market before class.
As I was going up the mountain towards the Peaks, about 645am,
I could see that it might be a beautiful sunrise, so I timed myself
so that I could stop at the Peaks to take some pictures.
What a beautiful sunrise!!! I took quite a few pictures
As I continued on, I stopped at the flea market, I found
a CD that was a tribute to Enya, the new age singer from Ireland.
I popped it into my player and the last song seemed like a hymn,
so I started it over to listened to it several times, it was so beautiful.
I looked up lyrics up when I got home, and yes, it was was an old
hymn. I found a picture of the sunrise and put the title on it.
and included the lyrics in the description. It is a very bittersweet
song, about the end days and the destruction of this world as
we know it, but because of the singers belief of our salvation
through Jesus, she able to sing because of the joy, knowing that
the worries and troubles of this world were going away and a new
world in Christ was coming.
As we go through life, and things become more difficult, health
fails, loved ones die, and we grow older and less able to do
what we used to do, God still reminds us of His promise
to us through Christ, and when we see His presence all around
us, how can we keep from singing praises to HIM, who has
set us from the prison of our sins and we are undefiled from
the shame of sins and declared clean and able to enjoy the
presence of God forever.
Amen
During the afternoon of last Friday, I heard my first singing Great Tit of the season. Unfortunately it had stopped singing by the time I had my camera ready to record it, but I successfully managed to get one yesterday. This was one of at least three I heard singing while out yesterday. This particular Tit started off quite quiet, but gradually got louder and persuaded some at least one other Great Tit nearby to join in with the singing. It seemed to go on for quite sometime until another Great Tit came to investigate the one I recorded here.
The song of the Great Tit is one of my favourite bird songs, so I'm very happy to hear them again. I used to associate their song with spring a lot, but even in December there are plenty chirping away in the trees and bushes of the local parks, woodland and gardens. Dunnocks have also recently started singing again. Looks like spring is on the way :-)

This girl and her father are from a caste that used to travel from town to town and entertain in weddings. As the tradition has been less common, they have been incresingly independent of entertaining tourits. The young girl was very shy, but had a beatiful voice and even more beautiful eyes. It was quite obvious that her father was very proud of her.
Thanks to ladyloneranger for inspiring me to upload this image :-)
I recently found another image of the same girl.
With all the gorgeous LE Ariel shots going around I thought it would be nice to look at the Singing Ariel doll and see how beautiful she is as well :D
A volunteer at the Maryland Zoo sings to a Kookaburra Bird, which immediately induces singing from the Australian meat eating bird.
I have been waiting to get a good shot of a human and Kookaburra singing together and i am so glad to finally have snapped this shot! If you are ever at the Maryland Zoo you can sometimes see this guy by the food station in the rotating bird display area. If you would like to hear the Kookaburra's beautiful song, just ask the keeper if he/she knows how to make them sing.
As soon as a human starts the song the bird instantly will make it's call!
From Wiki:
Kookaburras (genus Dacelo) are large to very large (total length 28-42 cm/11-17 in) terrestrial kingfishers native to Australia and New Guinea, the name a loanword from Wiradjuri guuguubarra, which is onomatopoeic of its call. The single member of the genus Clytoceyx, while commonly referred to as the Shovel-billed Kookaburra, is not treated in this article.
Kookaburras are best known for their unmistakable call, which is uncannily like loud, echoing human laughter — good-natured, but rather hysterical, merriment in the case of the well-known Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae); and maniacal cackling in the case of the slightly smaller Blue-winged Kookaburra (D. leachii). They are generally not closely associated with water, and can be found in habitats ranging from humid forest to arid savanna, but also in suburban and residential areas near running water and where food can be searched for easily.
