A Simple Pleasure of mine. A good fountain pen, and a notebook.
I used to collect quotes and sayings - bits of philosophy - and illustrations too. This notebook is full of Zen and Taoist sayings. It made a small book I could carry with me when I travelled, and could add to. I used to have several, but most have been lost over the years. This one is still with me ;o)

ah! the sublime simple pleasure of freshly cleaned, warm white flanel sheets. it trumps that first handful of hot popcorn, downing a cold brew on a hot summer day, and finishing a book. but in my opinion its slotted behind that first cup of coffee in the morning, a deep playful kiss, and the end of business on friday.

There's a delightful freedom in making milk abstracts. You've no idea what will emerge! Here I was going for a minimalist swirl - and it reminds me of a Henri Matisse cut-out. Maybe a woman dancing? Thanks to Suus for encouraging me to continue with the new art form! Go check out her superb milk adventures ;o)

Simplicity

What could be easier than simplicity? I am far from a fancy, needy, give-me give-me, label-whore type girl. It is all so wasteful to me...I would never spend $200 on a pair of jeans just to wear someone else's name on my ass...I don't require jewelery on every Hallmark occasion..or even at all..I am so not about the 'best of everything'...who ever decided what that was exactly? Not me..If I were the one making that decision...I would tell you all of the things I know to be the best that require nothing but you and me and time..A man that knows this..hits my spot...Take me to the beach...even though you are ridiculously tired after work..sit up and have a beer with me and talk for a bit...and especially if you are not even remotely interested in the things I am passionate about..fake it! Show some interest..give some input..tell me you love it..and by all means tell me that you love me.....SIMPLICITY!
I've always admired those vintage cars with a running board, a spare wheel on the back, and loud horns! I guess this is about as close as I'm likely to get ... but it's a great little stand-in! One of my Simple Pleasures and one I'm sure we all share - daydreaming ;o)

Ok... I just love the fragrance of freshly sharpened pencils, and especially the Dixon Ticonderoga www.dixonticonderoga.com (ahhh... cedar wood...!!!), and so keep the shavings in a small dish in my study as a sort of "pot pourri"...
Yes, I am indeed easily and simply pleased... Lol :-)
(*This is a shaving from a brand new blunt pencil - fresh out of the box - hence the gradual widening as it spirals around**)

It has been cloudy today, but the sun has tried to come through.
Finally I noticed an opening in the clouds, towards the North Sea.
What did Eva do?
Swoooosch off, of course - together with Thrill (yes yes, nerdy - its my cam), we became EvaThrilled both of us, I am sure of it.
Swoooosching off with my old mom when I am visiting her once a month on the opposite of the country gives me, and her, such pleasure and joy in our hearts.
The bonding you can get when you use some of your time with your folks is huge.
"They" are people too you know, not only your parents.

One of my Simple Pleasures
I've been recording and collecting an album of "Simple Pleasures" to celebrate the ordinary things that I take for granted - and might not think to photograph. They may not be expensive or obvious, but they help to make up the quality of life that I enjoy so much. They range from a found feather to the scent of rosemary - from sunshine on snow to the taste of coffee.
Today I'm adding the joy of making my own music. It may not be a pleasure for anyone else but me - but playing an instrument is such a satisfying experience.

Spotted this Red Admiral in the garden before heading out to take some snaps. It crawled slowly up to my finger and perched there to pose for a picture before fluttering casually away. It was a lovely moment and simple pleasure interacting with nature.

A small glass and mirror trinket box with a design by Charles Rennie Mackintosh - something I found in a local charity shop. Christine and I both enjoy wandering round all kinds of second-hand shops, car boot sales etc. looking for the unexpected treasure! A Simple Pleasures that we both share! So I thought that my trinket box, together with some eBay finds of blue marbles might cheer a winter day for you Chris ;o)

Eggshell porcelain is characterized by an excessively thin body under the glaze. It is luminous and translucent when placed in bright sunlight.
My tea set is not complete or especially high quality - but it has simple, hand-painted scenes that I love to look at. So I sometimes put the cups on a shelf in the window, and just enjoy them! Especially when, like today, the sunshine is accompanied by snow flakes ... and it is too cold to tempt me outside ;o)

As a Harry Potter fan, I joke that we all get to use the 'time turner' once a year. And tonight's the night. The clocks turn back an hour, and we can relive an hour - and then struggle to adjust for the next week!
I couldn't resist the chance to photograph my replica of Hermione's "time turner" from the 'The Prisoner of Azkaban' ;o)

Taken for the Flickr Friday theme of "Simple Pleasures". Flowers are one of life's simple pleasures. Seeing them makes me smile. Producing this still life involved me in the simple pleasure of photographing the flowers by daylight from a window. I then had the fun and pleasure of editing the photograph to produce the final result.
Whilst walking in the dales last weekend, the weather got me thinking. The clouds were very low and there was this wonderful eerie atmosphere, as the mist slowly undulating down Wharfedale.
This tree caught my eye, as the cloud base kept dipping down and stroking its highest branches. I’d been past this spot many times, but the mist had re-framed my perspective, helped me ‘see more’. The conditions had not only physically framed a new perspective but they had helped me emotionally connect with a familiar place in a different way.
The calm feelings I had, were paradoxically warm and optimistic considering the hostile conditions. But its only now that I select and edit this image that i truly recognise this. In reflection i did feel calm when there, but I didn’t explore the reasons, I didn’t question what it was that inspired them.
Yes I was inspired by the photographic conditions, but it was more than that. I truly felt like I should be there (sorry if I'm sounding like an old hippy). I wonder if the new perspective created by the unusual weather was the very reason I felt optimistic. It was indeed a break from the norm and the new perspective on familiar ground was refreshing. What made it special to me was that, I managed to find such positive optimistic feelings from what others would not.
This in itself is reward enough, but I wondered what other simple experiences that I took for granted could be explored and turned into simple pleasures.
Here is an (edited) list I began in the café on that day, that I fully intend to explore further. Some are more common than others and some I haven’t the bottle to share with you guys, fearing being taken away in a white coat (o:
Coming in from the cold,
The first five seconds of a new bath,
Clean sheets,
Smell of spring air,
A massive sneeze,
Waking up in the middle o the night, knowing that you have several hours left to sleep,
The smell of fresh coffee/bread,
A single bird song,
Sound of crashing waves,
Humbling feeling whilst looking at mountains,
Walking on a deserted beach at dawn / dusk,
Swimming with eyes closed,
Dry sand through fingers,
Sea spray on face,
Warm sun on face,
Catching a big wave,
The feeling of exhaustion from exercise,
The sound of the glugs from a wine bottle,
The smell of a log fire.

A stall I've never seen in Hoddesdon before. The owners are sitting under the clock tower enjoying a quiet moment. They smiled when I took the picture.
