Once upon a time there's a man

Who thought he could find a world in a can

He look'd for it so many time

That stars and lights stopped their shine

So this happened to that poor old man

The "Spirit of Jesuit Education" Sculpture Dedication. The sculpture was crafted by Mr. Littleton Alston, a Professor in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and commissioned by Mr. Mark H. Rauenhorst (B.A. '75) and his wife, Mrs. Karen Dolan Rauenhorst (BSN '75) to honor Fr. John P. Schlegel, S.J. for his commitment to Creighton University.

The sculpture is made of stainless steel and is approximately 15" tall. According to Alston, "the design begins with simple geometry and gradually grows into free form gesture in space forming a true transformation that grows toward the light."

Dedicated to Charles Simic, in appreciation of his wonderful poem:

The Road in the Clouds

Your undergarments and mine,

Sent flying around the room

Like a storm of white feathers

Striking the window and ceiling.

Something like repressed laughter

Is in the air

As we lie in sweet content

Drifting off to sleep

With the treetops in purple light

And the sudden memory

Of riding a bicycle

Using no hands

Down a steep winding road

To the blue sea.
