A minor project delivered a 3D visualisation tool for the vast amount of data collected by the Laser Airborne Depth Sounder Unit. Making use of Fledermaus software and a high end workstation for the Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Service. Photographed in Cairns in Queensland, Australia, during final acceptance phase.

for some undisclosed appointment(^_^), i visited the High Performance Computing & Visualization Centre (HPC/V) this afternoon. And of course I took some pics!

(we were in a little bit of a rush, so quite some of these pics are a little shaky because my camera still was on iso 50...)

(i visited this very same centre more than five years ago too....)

as a finishing touch, I connected my Mac visualizers to the just finished netbooting and happily mp3 playing Indy. :-)

"mark, I think you forgot a screw, right over here..."

Shots of the activities associated with the CART (IndyCar) race in the streets of downtown Houston, when the familiar became very unfamiliar as race cars went the wrong way through city streets at speeds reaching 180 MPH.

When you spend this much on a computer, you know that someone has paid attention to every little detail. Like making sure it still looks pretty in the datacenter when the lights are turned off.

Detail of the Iris Indigo (Silicon Graphics), a powerful computer introduced in 1991. This board has as nickname 'The Song and Dance Machine'.

Now that's a graphics card!... or make that four PCBs (with optional compressorboard). It'll run Quake1 quite happily :D

The Indigo2 has twelve SIMM slots located behind the CPU. The slots are fully populated. Four of the slots are inaccessible with the 5.25inch bay installed.

The top half of the CPU heatsink looks like aluminum and the bottom like copper.

The museum is located at 1401 N. Shoreline Blvd in Mountain View, CA. The building was formerly occupied by Silicon Graphics, Inc.

The 5.25inch drive bay has been removed to expose the CPU. This R10000 CPU is inside an Indigo2. A dime is sitting on the CPU's heatsink for scale.
