London BM - Franks or Auzon Casket 13c [8th cent CE] - The hero Sigurd and his horse Grani

In 1899, Sigurd Söderberg proposed that the right panel depicts "a representation of a scene from the Sigurd myth explained by Runic inscriptions."[28] In 1930, Eleanor Clark added, "Indeed, no one seeing the figure of the horse bending over the tomb of a man could fail to recall the words of the Guthrunarkvitha (II,5):

The head of Grani was bowed to the grass,

The steed knew well his master was slain."[29]

While Clark admits that this is an "extremely obscure legend,"[30] she assumes that the scene must be based on a Germanic legend, and can find no other instance in the entire Norse mythology of a horse weeping over a dead body.[31] She concludes that the small, legless person inside the central mound must be Sigurd himself, with his legs gnawed off by the wolves mentioned in Guthrun's story. She interprets the three figures to the right as Guthrun being led away from Sigurd's tomb by his slayers Gunnar and Hogne, and the female figure before Grani as the Norn-goddess Urd, who passes judgement on the dead. The warrior to the left would then be Sigurd again, now restored to his former prime for the afterlife, and "sent rejoicing on his way to Odainsaker, the realms of bliss for deserving mortals. The gateway to these glittering fields is guarded by a winged dragon who feeds on the imperishable flora that characterized the place, and the bodyless cock crows lustily as a kind of eerie genius loci identifying the spot as Hel's wall."[32]

"Santa María la Real" is one of the highlights for all people following the "Camino Aragonés" - since about 800 years. The facade is impressing it may take hours, to find out the many details. I stayed an extra day, when I had reached the town, just to see the shadows movig over the carvings.

A church did exist here already in 1131 next to the bridge crossing the river Aragon. It was transferred by Alfonso I to the "Knights Hospitaller" (aka "Order of Saint John", later "Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta"). The apse is the oldest part of the structure and probably dates back to that time.

The nave and the breathtaking Southern Portal of Santa María la Real were created late 12th/13th century. I have uploaded a "total overview" earlier and will now focus on some details.

Stockholms Roddförening is a rowing club on Gärdet next to Djurgårdsbrunn in Stockholm. The Club was founded in April 8, 1880. The current boathouse, designed by architect Sigurd Lewerentz was inaugurated July 13, 1913. Timber from the Stockholm Olympics arena were used to build the boathouse. At the ceiling in the boat room you still can see the seat numbers in the wood.

The house has over the years been carefully refurbished and modernized. It looks the same on both the outside and inside as when it was new. Most of the benches and tables in the upstairs rooms belong to the original interior from 1913. The house is considered to have great historical value.

moving slowly from copenhagen to norway in a rented campervan, we took the ferry on our first day from elsinore to helsingborg on the swedish side of the sound and found lewerentz' early workers' housing in eneborg.

(read more about it here.)

no one in their right mind would call lewerentz a left-wing architect, or a political architect for that matter, yet the first years of his career were devoted to affordable housing and he plays a natural part in our little narrative.

during his wanderjahre lewerentz had worked for three leading members of the german werkbund around the time of the initial planning of hellerau, the first german garden city. the werkbund was a ruskinian endevour to raise the quality of german craft, architecture and planning; not to gain a greater market share as would be the case today, but to improve all three and, ultimately, the lives of the germans. in the spirit of ruskin, aesthetics and morals were seen as interconnected, and housing was a key concern.

the lasting contribution of the werkbund to scandinavian architecture probably came from heinrich tessenow's writings and his enchanting drawings concerning modest housing. examples following tessenow's books closely were built around copenhagen in the early 1920's. they became popular with academics rather than the working class they were originally aimed at. this may in part explain why german werkbund housing, channeling english garden city ideals, was always a part of our left-wing architecture which in turn was always a suburban rather than an urban movement.

lewerentz' workers' housing in eneborg was a first. its influence is difficult to chart, since it has been all but forgotten, but it is worth noting that kay fisker, our own copenhagen master of regionalist brick housing, worked for lewerentz around the time it was conceived. it remains social housing to this day as I realised when I overheard an argument in serbo-croat on the stairs. how much of our later social housing can we expect to last us a hundred years?

The Eastern Cemetery (Östra kyrkogården) is famous for its design and beauty far beyond Swedens borders. The Cemetery was created by the architect Sigurd Lewerentz, who from 1916 until his death in 1975 was engaged in the cemetery's various stages of development. After a contest Lewerentz was chosen to design the cemetery and the related buildings.

The Architect

The architect, Doctor of Technology, Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) was 77 years old when he was asked to create St. Petri church. He had behind him, in addition to studies at Chalmers’ university, many years of collected experience, which he could now draw on. Full of life, knowledgeable, independent of all architectural traditions and styles he set about his task. He concentrated all his artistic passion on this task. What he created is not a product of a drawing-board. The placing of every brick is determined directly by him on the spot or indirectly by the instructions he gave to the artisans. The watchful eye of the architect constantly followed the work on the site.

Facts

The church was consecrated on 27th of November, 1966 by Bishop Martin Lindström. The nave is built according to “circumstantes”, the idea of the central place of worship. The area is quadratic, 18 x 18 meter. The height is 6 meter in the east and 5 meter in the west. The nave rests on and is built around a cross of iron (the T-cross or the Antonius-cross). The cross should be essential in the preaching and activity of the church as well as in human life. The ceiling is formed as archs and is a symbol of human spirit life as a waving movement. The building has no arched windows. The window-glasses are directly mounted on the outside of the wall with brackets, which gives a feeling of missing windows. All electric wiring and water pipes are mounted directly on the walls – nothing should be hidden into the church. The middle aisle corresponds to the holy way (via sacra) of old days which leads to the Holy Communion table. The walls are built up with the dark-brown brick from Helsingborg, which is made by hand craft as well as machine-made. No bricks are adjusted to suit – man is good enough to be used by God even if she is “odd, rough or not adjusted to suit”. The bricks are partly picked by the architect Lewerentz himself from a scrap-yard. Even human beings, who by others are considered as “scrap”, are suitable for the Lord. The daylight and the illumination are sparse. Too much natural light disturbs the full feeling according to the architect. Therefore the lamps must be lightened during service. Architect Lewerentz wanted to create a soft and warm surrounding with quiet and devotion. While sitting for a while in the church the details are coming forward. The chairs are from Denmark and originally designed for the Grundtvig-church (1940) in Copenhagen. Portable chairs in churches are an old tradition and give the opportunity to rearrange the furniture.

King Sigurd of Norway is said to have converted Orkney around 996 AD, but it does not appear to have come under the control of the Roman church until the time of Adalbert, Archbishop of Hamburg (1043-72) In 1152/3, Nidaros (Trondheim) became an archbishopric and Orkney came under its ecclesiastical control. Thorkel Amundson, foster father of Thorfinn Sigurdsson (The Mighty) had a homestead in Deerness. According to the Orkneyinga saga Thorkel killed Rognvald in 1046. Excavations have uncovered a Viking settlement a short distance of the medieval church at Skaill in Deerness.

The medieval parish church was taken down and rebuilt in late 1790s. The present church is the 1790s church, remodelled in the 20th century and by now is owned by "The Friends of St Ninian’s", formed in 2009 to save this church.

The tombstone kept inside was found on the graveyard. It is a typical "hogback" made from red sandstone. It is dated to the late 11th century.
