La pierre sculptée de Ramsund du 11ème siècle, la Suède, représente comment Sigurd a appris le langage des oiseaux, dans l'Edda poétique et la Saga Völsunga. 1) Sigurd est assis nu devant le feu préparant le cœur du dragon Fafnir pour son père adoptif Regin, frère de Fafnir. Le coeur n'est pas encore prêt, et quand Sigurd le touche, il brûle et met son doigt dans sa bouche. Quand il goûte le sang du dragon, il commence à comprendre le chant des oiseaux. 2) Les oiseaux disent que Regin ne tiendra pas sa promesse de réconciliation et essaiera de tuer Sigurd, ce qui amènera Sigurd à couper la tête de Regin. 3) Regin est mort à côté de sa tête, les outils de son forgeron avec lesquels il a forgé Gram, l'épée de Sigurd, sont dispersés autour de lui. 4) Le cheval de Regin est chargé du trésor du dragon. 5) C'est l'événement précédent où Sigurd tue Fafnir, et 6) montre Ótr au début de la saga
Dans la mythologie scandinave, la capacité de comprendre le langage des oiseaux était un signe de grande sagesse. Le dieu Odin avait deux corbeaux, Hugin et Munin, qui ont volé partout dans le monde et ont dit à Odin ce qui se passait parmi les mortels.
Le légendaire roi de Suède Dag le Sage était si sage qu'il pouvait comprendre ce que les oiseaux disaient. Il avait un moineau domestiqué qui volait partout pour lui apporter des nouvelles. Un jour, un fermier de Reidgotaland a tué le moineau de Dag, ce qui a provoqué une terrible punition de la part des Suédois.
Ce talent pourrait également être acquis en dégustant du sang de dragon. Selon l'Edda poétique et Volsunga Saga, Sigurd prouvé par inadvertance du sang de dragon alors que le cœur de Fafnir Asaba. Cela lui a permis de comprendre la langue des oiseaux, et a sauvé sa vie quand les oiseaux ont discuté des plans de Regin pour assassiner Sigurd.
Dans le poème éddico Helgakviôa Hjörvarðssonar, indirectement lié à la tradition de Sigurd, et non pas les raisons pour lesquelles un homme nommé Atli avait ce talent sont expliqués. Le fils du maître d'Atli, Helgi, voulait épouser la prétendue tante de Sigurd, la Valkyrie Sváva.

it is not a big space and it has a surprisingly low ceiling for a church. again, one is reminded of gaudi's crypt.
but also of an entirely different building type found in the kind of bland sururbia that surrounds it: the industrial shed.
there is no doubt that lewerentz is inspired by industrial architecture like so many modernists before him. yet, where they found clarity, rationalism and light, lewerentz found darkness, dripping water, exposed wiring, confounded tectonics and rust.
there is a possible third influence, I haven't seen mentioned anywhere eventhough it is staring us right in the face: jensen-klint .
it was jensen-klint who formulated that it was preferable to use whole bricks, it was lewerentz who made the radical move of using only whole bricks (the bizarre result of which is obvious where the vaults meet the supporting steel beam). the connection may seem a little thin until you realize that the chair used in klippan was originally designed for jensen-klint's main work, the grundtvig memorial church, which lewerentz would have known well.
and should he forget, he would have been reminded by his good friend and former employee kay fisker, who had become the chronicler and key proponent of the so-called klint school which sought to apply jensen-klint's ideals to modern architecture and which dominated copenhagen architecture a mere 50 kilometers away well into the sixties.

lots of later additions and details here. the roof had no windows originally and the whole structure below the building was much simpler, giving an overall impression of greater severity.
the elegant roofline could have been designed by carl petersen in copenhagen the same year.

sverre fehn talks of the milky white, shadowless nordic light - and utzon displays all its inherent notes of the greyscale....with lewerentz, however, there is only light and dark and as little in between as he can get away with.
the darkness of lewerentz' churches allows them to be private as well as communal spaces, spaces for people searching for God on equal terms with those already believing themselves saved.

MV EARL SIGURD at Kirkwall Harbour.
MV EARL SIGURD is a Ro-Ro vehicle ferry operated by Orkney Ferries Ltd.
It was built in 1989 by McTay Marine, Bromborough, Merseyside.
It is normally used on Outer North Isles services, connecting Kirkwall with Eday, Sanday, Stronsay, Westray, Papay, and North Ronaldsay.

Bench on west side of Sigurd Olson's Listening Point cabin on Burntside Lake near Ely, Minnesota. This was the retreat of renowned wilderness conservationist and author Sigurd F. Olson. It is located near his beloved Boundary Waters Canoe Area, which he worked tirelessly to preserve as a protected wilderness area. Listening Point includes this beautifully-simple Finnish-style log cabin and a sauna.
Olson authored nine books: "The Singing Wilderness", "Listening Point", "The Lonely Land", "Runes of the North", "Open Horizons", "The Hidden Forest", "Wilderness Days", "Reflections From the North Country", and "Of Time and Place".
