69th was the biggest battalion in the entire US Army - about 3000 men, which would normally be Brigade strength. The Badge on left is the 69th Unit Insignia "voix de commande"; the ribbon in middle is the Meritorious Unit Commendation, which was presented to the 69th while I was there by the Secretary of the Army, and the insignia and shoulder patch of the 1st Signal Brigade. The 1st Signal Brigade is currently stationed in Korea.
The 69th Signal Battalion was in Germany until 2014, when it was deactivated..

Signal 176.3 on the approach to Wingello, showing a yellow aspect. It can show steady yellow "caution" indication as well as pulsating yellow "medium" (preliminary caution/warning) indication. There are a couple of sidings for track vehicle and emergency use plus an emergency crossover at Wingello. Normally 176.3 operates as a permissive, automatic signal (block signal), but when the electric release is taken at Wingello to unlock points there, 176.3 becomes an absolute home signal. To indicate when it is working as an automatic signal, it displays an "A" light below the main head. When the release at Wingello is taken and it becomes in effect a home signal protecting points, the A light is extinguished. It then cannot be passed at stop without authority.
I can't remember why I took this picture at the time, but given the reaction to my Newark North Gate Railway Station image, I thought I'd throw it in. The channel under the bridge runs into Brayford Pool, earmarked in 1994 as the site for the new Lincoln University.

The new home signal installed by ARTC at Botany. It authorises entry to the Port Botany terminal complex. The main signal is fixed at red, authority to enter the terminal is given by a subsidiary shunt signal (small yellow).
Although located in coastal Sydney, the signals at Botany are now controlled from the country town of Junee, about 480 km or 300 miles away by rail!
Biggar signal box is a type S4 signal box built by the Caledonian Railway in 1906 and is listed category "B" by Historic Scotland. It is situated at the eastern end of the station complex at Biggar. The station closed in 1950 and the signal box in 1959. The station buildings, signal box, platforms, railway cottage and goods shed survive but unfortunately a house has been built over the western end of the station.
Immortalised by Airfix as a Series 1 Trackside kit in 1957, the Midland Railway Type 6 box is now a Grade 1 listed structure.

Weaverthorpe Signal Box was built in 1873 and is a rather odd looking building. It is located 4 or 5 miles from Weaverthorpe itself and is located on the York - Scarborough line between Malton and Seamer. The gates also seen in the photo are still worked by a wheel mechanism located inside the box. It has a frame of 16 levers dating from 1933 and the box is now a listed structure.
It is also a good location for photos:

This signal arm is genuine, but the rest - post, control rods and all - are a purely a decorative construct. The "signal" stands on the National Cycle Route 647 close to Fledborough Railway viaduct in Nottinghamshire. The cycle path follows the track bed of the former railway line across the River Trent at Fledborough (closed in the early 1980s), hence the signal.
