Instow railway station was a railway station in the village of Instow, North Devon, England, on the Bideford Extension of the North Devon Railway. Opened in November 1855, the station closed to passengers in 1965, but the line remained open for freight until 1982. The signal box has been preserved as a working attraction. The Atlantic Coast Express used to go through the station on its way to Torrington, but it did not call at Instow.

The former site of the railway tracks is now part of the Tarka Trail.

A leaf which has seen Better Days, on a walkway in Hermann Park, The shadow is a selfie, which normally I would avoid, but I really needed to catch this in a few seconds, on the run at the end of a beautiful day. In fact on one of my Better Days!

Yet another instance of a Barnett Newman Zip coupled with botanical jetsam &/or a topological equivalent of a disc—probably not the first reading that popped into your mind.

For #BetterDays #FlickrFriday and also “Signs of the Season” for the Flickr Lounge. Unaccountably refused to upload—even after export to jpg—so I’m posting a screen dump instead with time and location corrected to the original. The geotag shifted by a few meters in the process.

Happy Flickr Friday!

The alien always wondered is there any life among the distant stars. She knew the spot on the great plain where a rare signal could be detected. For a few years she tried to send signals back, and once even got some kind of a reply, though it was impossible to decipher. But now there are no signal, no matter how hard she tried...

This is an idea I wanted to do for a while, and I was hoping to take it on Friday, and post on Saturday, so I would be able to create and post the final picture for 2024 on December 30th/31th, which would mean that I would finally overcome my two weeks lag and would have a picture for every week of 2024, as always, and as if I never broke my streak (which I never did since spring 2019 until this December).

But on Friday I was too exhausted after watching a new episode of Doctor Who, and on Saturday I suddenly felt very, very unwell. The most (and worst) symptoms stopped the next day, but I'm still not feeling well, so it was quite a challenge to build a scene while feeling so (yeah, I'm stubborn). Hopefully I will feel better the next day, but a part of the plan for New Year's Eve is ruined anyway. :(

I'm going to reply to all your comments, notifications (after the last two weeks there are already a lot of them, oh my!) and will check your recent pictures, but obviously not today. :) If the odds would be in my favor tomorrow, I hopefully will post my usual end of the year picture, as planned.

P.P.S. The legs are sand blue! I didn't realize it will look as light bluish gray in that light. Don't worry, of course, she wears warm pants, it's too cold on the plain at night. :)

P.P.P.S. The scene was partly inspired by Doctor Who soundtrack:

Computer issues at South Lyon after meeting counter part L303 caused over an hour delay which during this time of year really takes away a lot of photo possibilities. With shadows at every other signal east of here. L302 passes the 64.4 signals between Webberville and Fowlerville in some mint afternoon golden light that was very rapidly falling behind the trees.

I might not have time to do a full "year in review" this year, but -- then again -- I'm not sure I took enough photos throughout the year to do one!

That said, certainly the highlight of my photography year was a three-day trip to Virginia with Brian Plant. In 2017, I had a very brief introduction to NS's H-Line north of Roanoke while on my way home from a work conference in Tennessee. I always wanted to go back, but -- with a wife and son at home -- finding the time always made that difficult. When NS started replacing the steam-era CPL signals on the line, however, I knew that time was of the essence. This year, Brian Plant offered to do the driving if I met him partway down, so -- with my wife's blessing -- we were off!

I figured Sunday, April 14th would just be a travel day, so I was very pleasantly surprised when Brian and I were able to catch up to southbound Train 13Z and the weather cooperated! Here, the train knocks down the CPL signal at Arcadia -- my favorite location on the line.

Recently, NS replaced the CPL signals here, so this shot was just in time for sure!
