My first products in 3D printed ceramics were the Ceramic Coasters and this time I wanted to create more of classical and beautiful product with a simple purpose.
Inspired by the curves, flowing surfaces and gentle ridges found on sea shells, I created a shape that is a continous surface which is curls around and inside itself to create an object that naturally holds a candle.
The candle holder is made to fit the IKEA Jubla crown candles and most other crown candles.

Hauswurz (Sempervivum tectorum)
Familie: Dickblattgewächse (Crassulaceae)
Die Hauswurz gehört zu den Sukkulenten, d.h. sie kann in ihren Blättern Wasser speichern. Damit zeigt sie auch ihren Standplatz an: karge, trockene Standorte mit wenig Niederschlag, gerne auch an felsigen Plätzen, Mauerritzen und im Gebirge bis 2800m Höhe. Die immergrüne Pflanze bildet Rosetten, die einzelnen blaugrünen fleischigen Blätter laufen vorne spitz zu und sind rot überlaufen. Die Blattränder sind dicht mit feinen Häarchen besetzt. Aus der Blattrosette wächst der bis zu 30cm hohe Blütenstängel, der dachziegelartig mit Blättchen besetzt ist. Die sternförmigen Blüten (Juli/August) stehen in Trugdolden und sind rosa bis fleischfarben, manchmal auch weiß. Innen befinden sich zahlreiche Staubblätter und schließlich in der Mitte mehrere Fruchtblätter. Diese enthalten den heranreifenden Samen, der explosionsartig durch Regentropfen herausgeschleudert wird und somit den Samen verbreitet. Nach der Blüte stirbt die Rosette ab, vorher hat sie jedoch zusätzlich mehrere Tochterrosetten gebildet, so daß die Hauswurz kleinere Flächen mit Rosetten in unterschiedlicher Größe überzieht. Sie steht unter strengem Naturschutz, ist aber über Gärtnereien zu beziehen und lässt sich problemlos im Garten oder am Balkon halten.
Verwandte Arten: Weltweit gibt es ca. 50 Arten, z.B. die Spinnwebwurz (S. arachnoideum), die Berghauswurz (S. montanum), die Großblütige Hauswurz (S. grandiflorum) und die Fransen-Hauswurz (Jovibarba sobolifera).
Heilwirkung:
Nur die Hauswurz wird in der Volksheilkunde, wo sie sehr geschätzt wird, eingesetzt. Sie wird in der Regel als Frischpflanze verwendet, die Herstellung einer Tinktur ist ebenfalls möglich. Die Pflanze enthält Gerb-, Bitter- und Schleimstoffe, Apfel- und Ameisensäure, Harz , Kalium, Ascorbinsäure, Tannin. Sie hilft bei Wunden, Verbrennungen, Insektenstichen, Geschwüren, Neuralgien, Warzen, Herpes labialis, Herpes zoster und Hämorrhoiden. Entweder schält man die einzelnen Blätter und legt sie auf kleinere Wunden oder man benutzt den frischen Presssaft der Blätter. In der Homöopathie findet sie ebenfalls bei den genannten Erkrankungen Einsatz.
Sonstiges:
Manchmal sieht man auf den Dächern alter Bauernhäuser noch Dachwurz wachsen, da man der Pflanze eine blitzableitende Wirkung zuspricht. Karl der Große ordnete daher wohl in seiner Landgüterverordnung „Capitulare de villis“ den Anbau der Dachwurz an. Dazu passt auch, dass die Pflanze in vergangenen Zeiten dem Gott des Blitzes, Donar, geweiht war.
Man glaubte, daß eine rosafarbene Blüte Glück bringen sollte, eine weiße Blüte einen Unglücks- oder Todesfall in der Familie voraussagte.

This was a difficult shot to get. It was a windy day and the Shell sign wanted to pivot around; this is one of those original rotating signs, but I doubt it's supposed to do it on its' own like that!

The shells and the straw mat were something I found on my parents' balcony when I was visiting many years ago. I'd just finished building my Bender, and I was always itching to use it. Because the balcony was almost always in shadow, light tended to be directional and highly diffuse. The combination worked well.
I stopped down a fair bit for this one, and seem to recall the exposure time was in the many seconds range. I intentionally over-exposed it to get a high key exposure on the white shell.

These are believed to have been the preferred light source for early cave dwellers: a shell, packed with moss that had been soaked in animal fat. The fat burns with the moss acting as a wick; the shell makes it possible to carry around. (For the sake of sensitive modern noses, the guide used candle wax instead of animal fat, but the principle is the same.)
We were surprised just how much light these actually gave off. After demonstrating how well they worked, the guide then extinguished the flames, to let us see how dark 'really dark' can get (which is very). It didn't worry me at all, living away from streetlights and such things; but I fancied that I could sense a few people in our party tensing.
