Shell Beach / Calif / Central Coast
Taken on a very nice evening in Shell Beach, the same day as "Rare Skies". Spending the evening walking along the wet sand and shallow tides forgetting about most things, especially the time. The photo earns its handle because I stayed out on the beach a little to late. Its actually a small cove, flanked on all sides by the high cliffs and mostly hidden and usually accessible at low tide. In the distance where the cliff meets the sea the tide had come in way to fast and I had to fight the pull of the vigorous tide as it slammed into me and threatened to pull me into deeper waters and for a moment I thought I was actually going to be pulled out. I gracefully threw my tripod on the rocks above (its durable), where I wanted to be- and slung my bag around my shoulder and waited for the tide to momentarily recede but the water was so far in that there really was no receding at all. Luckily my aquatic shoes held against the slippery rocks and I was able to get to safety. Not after getting drenched from my chest down and dosed with some adrenaline and a drowned cell phone. I should have known better to stay out at this spot late, for I have shot here numerous times but... nobody is perfect. Lesson learned.

I took this photo before I had the sofware I use today to stich photos together to make panorams. It took a lot of time, but it was worth it. I love this town that is just north of Pismo Beach California.

A new take on an old photo taken more than a year ago. The original has a very violet tone to it from the cokin filter I used. I tried to take out that overall violet color and give it more of a natural look but I'm still not sure if I have succeeded. Maybe I should just give the photo a rest and let it be. :)

This is the view from the back yard of the Shell Beach House our friend Sheila rented. She invited us to dinner, to enjoy the hot tub and to let the doggies play in the yard.
Charly was our first dog. She was Husky mixed with Golden Retriever (Goberian).
When diagnosed with cancer after her splenectomy they gave her 2 weeks to two months at most. She gave us 4 great months and was even able to surf the waves in shell beach one last time.

Off the bat, I'm not crazy about this composition. But I wanted a high contrast scene for this moment, because this is HDR. It is a four image composite which is probably close to the bare minimum of how many pictures are recommended for blending a scene like this together. Also, I probably could have widened my exposure levels. I think they were 1 stop or 2 apart per photo. All in all, I consider myself a novice at High Dynamic Range processing but look forward to using it more often. :)
This was processed first in Photomatix Pro 4.0 then re-opened in CS3 where it was shrunken down and sharpened for the web and added the watermark.

These two gulls acted as mates, they were searching for a nesting spot, walking together and bobbing heads. Then one found a tasty treat and brought it up. They seemed to be sharing amicably until the sharer attacked the other. It's as if suddenly the urge to be greedy overcame the urge to share with a mate. I don't believe this was a mating behavior, the one that was attacked was driven off the cliff!
Been sitting on this image for awhile now, passing it up with other entries for no particular reason.
Taken in Shell Beach, Calif. The ghostly shape in the picture is yours truely but when I was taking the picture I was thinking of a great friend I once had whose favorite place to go was close to here. I imagine a part of him drifts on the coastal breeze forever a part of the beautiful coast.

We hung around for quite a while trying to see through the fog. There were brief periods where we could almost see out there then it got better... then fogged in again. But during that period, the whole crew was visible.
Next photo was after another wait and might be a little clearer.
