The tongue is the only tool that gets sharper with use ;@))) by Washington Irving

Looking along the beach of Lannacombe Bay and a few intrepid beach people have made it this far

Found her again on 17 August. I had sharper pics of her on the day. But this might be the one in which she looked the best.

After a minute or two in this tree, she headed off to a different tree (they seem to alternate between a couple of areas about 50 metres apart).

But as soon as she departed this tree, she was picked up by a New Holland Honeyeater. It honed onto her like a heat seeking missile and was fascinating to see how quick and elusive she could be. She managed to stay just an arms-length ahead of her pursuer till she disappeared into the leafy green of her destination. Fortunately I don't think NHH's kill their victims. Probably only like to torment them. I'll be sure to check back on her in time!

This is a closer and sharper view and very similar to the shot two back in the album. I think the structure at the water edge is for oyster culture. There is Sherkin Oysters Ltd.

Another shot from down at the South Side Works. I really liked how you could see the inside of the store, and thought it looked pretty cool in HDR!

Check out my South Side set to see some more from down there!

I don't mind invitations, but please no big, shiny, flashing, glitter graphics, they will be deleted. Thanks!

Enjoy your holidays my friends!

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope is aligned across all four of its science instruments, as seen in a previous engineering image showing the observatory’s full field of view. Now, we take a closer look at that same image, focusing on Webb’s coldest instrument: the Mid-Infrared Instrument, or MIRI.

The MIRI test image (at 7.7 microns) shows part of the Large Magellanic Cloud. This small satellite galaxy of the Milky Way provided a dense star field to test Webb’s performance.

Here, a close-up of the MIRI image is compared to a past image of the same target taken with NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope’s Infrared Array Camera (at 8.0 microns). The retired Spitzer telescope was one of NASA’s Great Observatories and the first to provide high-resolution images of the near- and mid-infrared universe. Webb, with its significantly larger primary mirror and improved detectors, will allow us to see the infrared sky with improved clarity, enabling even more discoveries.

For example, Webb’s MIRI image shows the interstellar gas in unprecedented detail. Here, you can see the emission from “polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,” or molecules of carbon and hydrogen that play an important role in the thermal balance and chemistry of interstellar gas. When Webb is ready to begin science observations, studies such as these with MIRI will help give astronomers new insights into the birth of stars and protoplanetary systems.

Cortaderia selloana, commonly known as pampas-grass,

is a flowering plant native to southern South America, including the pampas after which it is named.

Der Begriff "Ziergras" stammt nicht aus der Botanik.

hier: Pampasgras aka Cortaderia Selloana

... after the German botanist and naturalist Friedrich Sellow.

...

The feathery flower head plumes, when dried, are widely used in flower arrangements and other ornamental displays.

If it looks cold, it's because it WAS cold - brutally cold!

This photo was taken on 29 December 2017, when four of us (using just one car) took part in the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for the Cochrane Wildlife Reserve area. I'm not sure why it's called Wildlife Reserve, as it consists of back roads and farms just like on our other Counts. The area we covered (right on the east edge of the count circle) was east of Highway 22/Cowboy Trail. I added a touch of filter in post-processing, as the barns needed a bit sharper detail.

The first evidence of any wildlife for me, first thing in the morning, was a Jackrabbit that was nibbling on snow-covered plants right outside our leader's house. Of course, at 7:15 in the morning, it was still dark.

One of my favourite things to photograph on this annual Count are the Llamas at one of the farms.. This farmer has several of these large, amusing animals, and they are always one of the highlights of this Count for me. I'm not sure how many Llamas they have - somewhere around 7? Most of these animals were given to them by other farmers who no longer wanted them.

"Llamas appear to have originated from the central plains of North America about 40 million years ago. They migrated to South America and Asia about 3 million years ago. By the end of the last ice age (10,000–12,000 years ago) camelids were extinct in North America. As of 2007, there were over 7 million llamas and alpacas in South America and, due to importation from South America in the late 20th century, there are now over 100,000 llamas and 6,500–7,000 alpacas in the US and Canada." From Wikipedia.

One of my favourite farms to stop at has a beautiful, old dog named Fang, along with beautiful cats, and I always look forward to seeing them each year. This day, though, with a temperature of -23C all day (windchill probably at least -30 to 35C), cats stayed indoors. I caught a brief glimpse of only one cat outside. The neighbouring farm, which is also included in our area, has two beautiful old, red barns and I was longing to see these again. Unfortunately, no one was home, so we couldn't search the farmyard, but I did get the chance to take two rapid shots through the trees of one of the barns, from a side view.

Another farm we stopped at had beautiful Pine Grosbeaks and Common Redpolls coming to a feeder. A joy to see these splashes of colour in a very cold, white, white world.

So, it was a very enjoyable day, though there were not all that many species or individual birds to be seen. Too cold and too much snow to spend much time searching various farmyards, and we had finished the Count by 2:30 pm. I will add a list of the bird species seen, in a comment box below. Many thanks, Dave, for driving us. You did a great job of handling roads that were not in the greatest condition, and it was greatly appreciated. The light was awful all day, and it was so difficult to see where the ditch was and where one road turned off to another. There is no way I would ever try driving on our back roads in such weather! Also, a huge thank-you to the various landowners who were kind enough to allow us to wander round their farmyards. These visits make our day so much more interesting and rewarding!

Looking sharper and more pert here's ADL Enviro 400 Hybrid number 207 (SN61 BBK) as usual on Service 10 to the scenic terminus at Torphin.

As I reported earlier on Scania 987 Lothian is creating a new, revised line in Weinrot und Weiss and here is another slightly different interpretation of the same, but this time applied to an Alexander Enviro 400.

Note the more straight-lined presentation and gone are the curves and swoops around the axles and also the gold swirls too. All the panels are now in one individual colour with no overlay. This will enable a quicker change over during repair, and of course it will be cheaper.

The new design will be different depending on the vehicle and so with close inspection Lothian's livery might in future not look identical on each bus.

I rather like the white paint compared to the Winter Gold on the other Enviro's, and now 207 joins 204 in moving away from the metallic colours.

A sharper image than yesterday although it was windy. This fellow was easily spooked, took me several shots to get one in the bag. Spent another 30 minutes looking for a female without any luck. Females are green-bronze and lack the wing colour. Their flight very much resembles that of a butterfly.

Even though not a new bird for me, this was my favorite bird from our last Maine trip.....and the last bird of the visit as we returned to the mainland on the ferry. I wish it was a sharper image, but photographer excitement, a pitching boat and a loon paddling furiously away from us produced this result. I always thought that these beautiful markings belonged to the males, but learned that these breeding colors apply to both sexes during Mar-Oct.

St. Paul the Apostle is a very revered saint in the Sicilian town of Palazzolo Acreide, the feast in his honor is celebrated on two occasions (very important periods if referring to peasant civilization), on 29 June (the day I took this photo story this year 2023) date of his martyrdom, and January 25, the date of his conversion to Christianity. The "summer party" of June 29, begins with a particular collection of donut-shaped bread (in Sicilian called "cuddura"), donated by the villagers and collected on a cart, this is the "round of bread", these loaves (called "di San Paolo") have decorations that recall snakes: the reference is always to San Paolo, considered the protector from the poisonous bites of vipers, this is the ancestral legacy of an ancient peasant civilization, the wheat harvest period that coincides with the feast, it makes working in sunburnt fields particularly dangerous; once there were characters to whom supernatural gifts were attributed, they were called "ciarauli", capable of protecting from the venomous bites of the viper (This year, a very nice man of Palazzolo Acreide, who was also present last year, was present at the feast to recall these ancient figures. Instead of little snakes, as was once the custom, he had with him a very calm python, also because it was full). The procession takes the name of "sciuta", with reference to the "exit" from the basilica of San Paolo of two floats, first the float comes out with the relic of the saint, carried on the shoulders by the devotees, immediately after, at 13.00 o'clock the exit of the float takes place with the ancient statue of Saint Paul holding a sword in his hand (the iconography represents him with the sword for two reasons, he was beheaded with a sword stroke, and because he, referring to the word of God, defined it more effective and sharper than a double-bladed sword), at this point they begin among the most spectacular and evocative pyrotechnic games that I have ever seen, we witness a phantasmagoric and kaleidoscopic explosion of colors made with enormous colored confetti and with colored ribbons about two meters long called 'nzareddi, which recall the shape and movement of snakes. During the procession we witness the rite of children who, completely naked, are taken by their parents by the expert hands of two devotees present on the float, they are thus placed in front of St. Paul to ask for his intercession and protection, sometimes these children are adorned with paper money, in fact, the donation of money is part of the rites that accompany the procession. Among these rites is the vow of the "bare shoulder" made by devout bearers, and that of women who walk barefoot by vow. The procession with the two vare then arrives, as a sign of devotion, in the church of the Annunziata.

Description: In Chandra's X-ray image (blue) of RCW 108, over 400 sources of X-ray light are seen. Many of these X-ray sources are young stars undergoing massive flaring just as our Sun did billions of years ago. The infrared Spitzer image (red and orange) shows the clouds of dust and gas of this region. The bright knot just to the left of center is where a cluster of young stars is hidden behind a dense cloud of molecular hydrogen. Intense radiation from massive stars in another nearby cluster, just out of view to the left of this image, is destroying the cloud that contains this cluster. Ultimately, this will trigger a new generation of stars to form in RCW 108.

Creator/Photographer: Chandra X-ray Observatory

The Chandra X-ray Observatory, which was launched and deployed by Space Shuttle Columbia on July 23, 1999, is the most sophisticated X-ray observatory built to date. The mirrors on Chandra are the largest, most precisely shaped and aligned, and smoothest mirrors ever constructed. Chandra is helping scientists better understand the hot, turbulent regions of space and answer fundamental questions about origin, evolution, and destiny of the Universe. The images Chandra makes are twenty-five times sharper than the best previous X-ray telescope. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory controls Chandra science and flight operations from the Chandra X-ray Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Uploaded sharper version 4/10/20. The description below is from 2013.

This is from early December. I finally developed the negatives yesterday.

The sun was disappearing behind the hills, and a storm was approaching from Washington. The wind was picking up, and I was rapidly losing contrast in the shaded areas. I waited for one last sunbreak to hit the orchard below. After I shot this, I raced back to the car and threw the equipment into the back just in time for the deluge to hit.

Despite the wind, and fading light, I managed to get a long enough exposure to get the foreground rocks sharp. I don't think they're sharp enough to print larger that 11x14, but I'm pleased with the overall result.

BLACK and White Edition by Aviary

The world is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.

Bertrand Russell

The Leica M Monochrom features a new 18MP, 35mm-sized CCD sensor that only captures black-and-white, but because there is no color Leica claims it will produce spectacular image quality at up to ISO 10,000; images are said to be 100 percent sharper than an image produced by an equivalent color sensor. This specialized camera is being marketed to street photographers and photojournalists who work exclusively in black-and-white. The advantage of a dedicated black-and-white camera is that real brightness values are available for each individual pixel, resulting in sharp, accurate black and white images without the need for post-processing.

The camera is packaged with a full version of Silver Efex Pro 2 to let users recreate the looks of their favorite black-and-white films, and registered owners can take advantage of Whitewall, the Leica Monochrom print service that uses a traditional wet chemistry silver process.

The Key Features in Detail:

Newly developed monochrome CCD sensor with a native resolution of 18 Million Pixel.

With its full, native resolution of 18 megapixels, the Leica M Monochrom delivers 100% sharper images than with color sensors. The fact that its sensor does not "see" color means real brightness values are available for each individual pixel. That is to say, the sensor of the M Monochrom produces a "genuine" black-and-white image directly. In combination with the brilliant imaging performance of Leica lenses and the perfect matching of the sensor to the M system, this creates pictures of outstanding sharpness and natural brilliance, with no need to sharpen the image in post-processing. The result is incomparable picture quality, such as would normally only be expected of a medium-format camera. The impressively low noise level of the monochrome CCD sensor delivers an extremely fine-grained image, which is not perceived as disturbing even at the highest ISO settings.

Raw data histogram and parameter clipping warning

The Leica M Monochrom impresses discerning users and fine-art photographers with a raw data histogram for exact control of tonal values. In contrast to standard histograms, it depicts the actual raw data, unprocessed and uncorrupted. Especially in combination with the parameter clipping view, this enables exposures to be optimized with great precision in order to fully exploit the available dynamic range.

Tones

Whether sepia, cool or selenium with the M Monochrom images can be adjusted to the characteristic tones of analog black-and-white photography at the press of a button.

Design

The classic, iconic Leica M camera design is embodied in the Leica M Monochrom. The mat black chrome-finish top cover imbues the camera with the look of a discrete, unassuming instrument. Only an engraving on the black accessory shoe reveals the product's name. The camera features an extremely soft, tactile leatherette body covering which is perfectly in keeping with the discrete overall look. The camera comes with a real-leather carrying strap made of high-grade cowhide. Additionally there is a new handgrip available, featured with the same black chrome finish and the same leather trim as the camera.

Silver Efex Pro included

A full version of the world's leading black-and-white image processing software, Silver Efex Pro 2, is supplied. Silver Efex Pro 2 incorporates a unique and powerful set of darkroom-inspired tools to produce top-quality black-and-white pictures. Silver Efex Pro 2 emulates over 20 different black and white film types to recreate the classic monochrome look of film. The emulation is based on detailed analysis of multiple rolls of each film type. This results in accurate reproductions of popular film from ISO 32 to ISO 3200.

Leica Monochrom prints

For passionate black-and-white photographers looking to retain the accustomed brilliance and quality of their images in print, Leica offers a unique service. In cooperation with the photo processing lab Whitewall, the Leica Monochrom Print Service enables M Monochrom customers to obtain superb black-and-white prints of their work. This involves developing the digital images from the Leica M Monochrom on genuine fiber barite photographic paper. Thanks to use of the classic wet-chemistry silver process, the developed prints are indistinguishable from hand-made prints of analog images. Customers looking to utilize this exclusive service can order prints directly from Whitewall after registering their M Monochrom. This service is initially only available to Leica M Monochrom customers.

Displays in flash modeFlash ready: constant illumination of flash symbol LED in the viewfinder, flash confirmation: Constant illumination or rapid flashing of the LED after exposure, underexposure indicated by temporarily extinguished LED

Viewfinder principleLarge size, bright, combined bright-line viewfinder / rangefinder with automatic parallax compensation

EyepieceAdjusted to -0.5 diopters Correction lenses for -3 to +3 dptr. available

Image field framingBy projection of two bright-line frames with each lens attached: for 35 and 135 mm, or for 28 and 90 mm, or 50 and 75 mm. Automatically displayed when lens mount locks. Any of the pairs of bright-line frames can be displayed by moving the frame selection lever

Viewfinder to image correspondenceAt a focusing distance of 1 meter, the bright-line frame size corresponds precisely to that of a sensor size of 23.9 x 35.8 mm.

At ifinity, and depending on the focal length of the lens in use, more of the sensor is covered than the bright-line frame actually shows, the opposite is the case for focusing distances of less than 1 meter, i.e. somewhat less

Magnification0.68-fold (for all lenses)

Long-base rangefinderBright rectangular spot (RF spot) with coincident and superimposed fields in the center of the viewfinder image

Effective rangefinder base47.1 mm (mechanical rangefinder base 69.25 mm x viewfinder magnification 0.68x)

After sharing too many alternative versions all ready, I am sharing more. My obsession drives me to create these digital just to ensure that the RSPB Reserve Sign that is the subject of the picture is shown with more details of the Reserve. There are great havens to find the support that nature receives and we need to highlight and share them, to treasure them and to further continuance and growth in order to preserve, protect and prosper our natural world.

These V Fold photographs show the sign at RSPB Scotland Loch Leven nature reserve reflected upon itself forming a sharp fantastic figure V fashioned from the weathered steel and full of a wonderful coloured sky. It was a great moment of evening rich sky and artificial lights from the car park making for deep colours ad strong silhouettes. I do not normally crop a picture that I reflect upon itself, here I did in part to rest my arms fearing that I might not be steady enough to take this picture, so the crop brings about a sharper image than I could in camera.

The sign with birds in silhouette both open and closed catches the eye and makes for a great positive message as you walk from the Car Park to the Visitor’s Centre. I was very pleased with the single image and also with the joining of images which immediately offered two variants. The two variants were either the original full frame joining forming a Tree V Fold, or a sharper incised cut to make a more precise V Fold at the centre of the pictures.

The Sun and Winter go very well together. Bright and strong the shadow making light built everything, well photographically at least. This is a great place with excellent cafe and visitor’s centre making a superb human reaction to help wildlife. This place is a reserved world of natural wonders nestled in amongst our modern pressures of life and living that often overlook wildlife and the chance to be calmer and closer to the land, water and sky and also to those that never left the cycle of seasonal lifestyle.

Superior reproduction of point light sources, such as streetlights at night, is achieved by minimising sagittal coma flare. Point light sources appear as fine rounded points, even at the edges of the image.

This is my grandmother who will be 97 in Spetember. Her mind is sharper than mine. She regales her great grandchildren with so many wonderful stories from her boat trip to America in 1918, the things she did to attract my grandfather in the summer of 1927, the way she and my grandfather saved money to bring so many family and friends and friends of friends over from Germany before it was too late.

Her chicken soup is legendary as are her baking skills and while she is nowhere near as fast as she once was, we all love watching her zip around corners and zoom down the straightaways with her walker.

Whenever a family trip is being planned, it must always include a stop in California where she lives. This is a non-negotiable mandatory as set forth by my kids who can't get over how "with it" and fun she is.

I'm not sure how much longer she has but every single second with her is a magnificent thing.

Uploaded sharper version 7/4/19. The description below is from 2011.

I took this on a windy day last spring. The wind provided a challenge to get everything in focus from near to far while stopping motion blur with 100 ASA film. My original intent was to get right up to the wildflowers, and use a wide angle lens. The composition would have been much more dynamic, but the angle would have also would have removed much of what was pleasing about the background. I may work on a better crop of this picture in the future, but I present the full frame here.

Camera: Hasselblad 500CM.

One of my favourite photos from 2010 was taken from a simple point and shoot. For this reason i wanted to get the same shot by with a better camera, longer exposure and sharper details. I feel it was a good result.

Another reworked Mk1 GM 85mm at F1.4 image using Topaz Ai Sharpening in post.

This is now starting to work out for me, after previously experimenting with several different sharpening filters and being disappointed...The apparent lens sharpness at the plane of focus in Topaz is much improved, without in anyway that I can observe (at 100%) does it damage the OoF rendering (No outlined OoF hard edges)...The painterly bokeh of the OoF areas which is what I have always loved about the Mk1 is retained intact, without any real world noticeable increase in noise and contrast.

The OoF highlight areas still have that nice halation (Softness/glow) look about them...The plane of focus of the green leaves, I really wouldn't wish to be any sharper...It appears at least to me that I CAN have my cake and eat it too

My only real gripe with the Mk1 lens now is the AF side of things and nothing really else, other than perhaps the weight of the lens itself compared to the Mk2
