Update: A birder friend suggests this is a Sharp-Shinned Hawk, not a Cooper's Hawk as originally thought. At first I thought it was a juvenile peregrine falcon, because those have been seen in the neighbourhood too, but it's not.

Photo taken by Jeremy Dec. 10, 2009 right across the street from our place, in the oak trees ringing the Strathcona school field in Vancouver (NW corner of Heatley and Keefer Streets).

At first I thought it was one of our peregrine falcons. There's an overpopulation of aggressive squirrels in our neighbourhood, which I hope the peregrine falcons - or whatever raptor this is - are taking care of. We do have peregines in the neighbourhood. In the summer while watching a falcon (an adult peregine, I thought) I noticed an oblivious crow in an adjacent tree. When it finally caught sight of the falcon it did a cartoon double take, made a strangulated choking sound and nearly fell off its branch. The falcon was watching a squirrel and couldn't have cared less, but the crow went off and loudly warned the whole neighbourhood.

In some areas, the rock was still rough and jagged. Fun to climb on, if slightly painful.

Sharp-lobed Hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba, sometimes listed as Anemone acutiloba or Anemone nobilis). I was surprised at how white these flowers are. Closer to home I usually see the other local species of hepatica (Round-lobed Hepatica), which typically has a purple tint to the flowers, among other differences. This while not being Sharp's first transistor radio is a gorgeous coat pocket radio using Sony transistors. The color is an eggshell blue and looks great on this radio with the hour glass grill and unique tuning pattern all adding to it's style.

Sharp-shinned Hawk (my best guess), Pittsburgh (Dec 31, 2025)

Peale's Falcon: When all the pigeons took flight, I looked up and saw this bird. From the back it looked like a slate colored crow, but flew differently. After it landed in this tree I took its picture and noticed the green band on its right leg.

Sharp-shinned Hawks become very docile once they have fed. During these times, the birds can be closely approached and easily photographed. Listen for irritated chickadees and nuthatches for clue about where to find sleepy Sharpies with full bellies

They are beautiful birds and I will never forget my experience with this one today.

There was no shortage of tulip varieties to behold at the world famous Butchart Gardens in Victoria BC. This one reminds me a bit of a venus fly trap.

Is broken. It will not do anything.

Can anyone definitively ID this bird? Coopers Hawk, Sharp Shinned Hawk? No matter what species he/she is, what an absolutely intimidating face they have!
