Anyone who likes to photograph birds of prey knows just how difficult they can be. Their excellent visual acuity means that they usually see us well before we see them. But that same ability frequently has them departing long before we can get close enough for a meaningful photo. In most places, the photographer has to be quite stealthy and remain well hidden. In Florida, however, I find that it simply means finding the birds that inhabit areas well visited by humans. Many of these birds have become tolerant enough to observe, and some even seem to like watching humans. At the very least, they probably enjoy the great variety of scavenger prey that follow human encroachment into their environment. Those little bits of food that fall off your plate attract a multitude of insects and small animals, making it easier for our banded red-shouldered hawk to pick up a bite to eat. #RedshoulderedHawk
Conrail OI-16 heads south down the Garden State Secondary with Norfolk Southern SD45-2s 1700 and 1704 for power. Since the activation of PTC on the North Jersey Coast Line, this train normally has CSX power assigned. A combination of the regularly assigned power being tied down at Browns and the train only running to Port Reading allowed for the NS duo to lead.
When the sheep pick on sweet lil' Hildegard, she hides inside her clubhouse. I put a pumpkin nearby for her to enjoy, and Cleo came over to snack with her. We have a big pile of pumpkins at the farm that I've gathered or were donated to give to the animals as healthy treats.

Good morning everyone. Just a single quick pic of butterflies sharing a Field Thistle blossom. One of those rare pics you get of three different species of butterflies together and more importantly, all in focus.
Starting at the top is a Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus troilus), then a Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus), and last but not least on the bottom is a female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus).
Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day and weekend.

The Red-headed Woodpecker and other woodpeckers may share more in common with football players than a helmet like head of feathers. They may share "tau." Some very preliminary research has suggested that a normal neuronal protein called tau, that can form abnormal aggregations following nerve injury, like that seen in football players with chronic head trauma, may also be present in some woodpeckers. It is much too early to draw any conclusions but theories abound. Consider that deceleration caused in the average amusement park rides is about 6 G (or 6 times the force of gravity). Concussions usually occur at about 100 G. But when a woodpecker's head decelerates against a tree trunk, forced have been estimated at as much as 1200 G! That's a smashing surprise. Unique anatomical adaptations protect these animals from otherwise disastrous effects. Further studies of these amazing creatures may someday lead to materials and methods for treating and avoiding chronic brain injury from repeated trauma. #RedHeadedWoodpeckers
