Spring shadows on the walls of a rusted iron outdoor sculpture. Man-made shapes and natural shadows.
Shape is used in this photo to emphasize the girl in the picture. In order to get this picture I positioned my sister in front of the window and had my camera focus on the sky so she would be a completely black silhouette. I think I did a good job with making the front of her negative space. I would change the positioning of her and where shes standing so their would be balance. The principles of design that are used are emphasis and contrast.
1.What element does this image investigate and how is it reflected in the composition?
This image investigates shape. This is reflected in the composition as we can see the different forms of the panels of the ceiling (many rectangles), the lights (elongated rectangles) the doors, lockers, bricks and the perspective point (wall at the end of the hall) which are also rectangles.
2.What is the subject matter of the photograph?
The subject matter of the photograph include the lockers and doors on both walls (architecture).
This photo works for my project because you can see the geometric shapes in the reel drum. I chose to take this photo because I noticed these all around my neighborhood because of the construction, and thought it would be unique. To take this photo I bent down to ground level and angled my camera upwards at the reel drum. The principles displayed in my photo are balance, rhythm, pattern, and emphasis. To make this photo even better I could have found another reel drum with a less distracting background, and also without the dent on the top that is a bit distracting. My biggest strength in this photo is the use of geometric shapes.
