To commemorate the never-ending wet weather, here's a drenched ruddy turnstone in desperate need of an umbrella. From my Texas travels last month ...
Feeling very lucky today, no major issues either here or that I’ve heard off from my family thus far. Just trying to shake loose all those tensions from the storm and focus on the days ahead.
Kind of like this young Reddish Egret from Fort DeSoto Beach this past weekend.
This little blue heron surely knew how to shake it up while it was non-stop fishing. Sometimes it made a big splash without success and other times he/she scored.
“Ten more miles to the Lakehead Junction
Through the timber she’s a-comin’ round the bend, round the bend.
Travelin’ man gonna jump the boxcar,
Shake the dust, find a woman, make a friend.
Ten more miles (ten more miles) to the great lake waters —
You’ve been ridin’ many a mile, many a mile.
Prairie winds from the golden wheat fields
Are whisperin’: shake the dust and stay awhile.”
Eight days after departing Calgary for Hamilton on my latest trans-Canada pilgrimage, the words of George Hamilton IV's "Shake the Dust" set the mood at Thunder Bay, Ont., as westbound stacks frame up an apt 'Alberta Break' grain car in the shadow of the Fort William Elevator Company complex.

After spending some time in the water hunting for salmon, a wet grizzly bear headed to the shoreline for a good shake. He/she has a lovely background of golden fall sedge grass. Cariboo Chilcotin, British Columbia.

Long billed curlew rousing! I have read that this act of shaking out feathers as a grooming behavior shows that the bird is comfortable and content.

Well here we find ourselves at the close of another year ... 2022. There's something very cathartic to me about the close of a year ... sort of "out with the old and in with the new" reflection goes through my mind. I often think about my memories from the year, good and bad, happy and sad. 2022 was filled with both for me ... lots of wonderful moments with family and friends, as well as with nature and the outdoors. I lost my mom in 2022, so it was also a year of pain and grief ... and lots of healing. This year, in particular, I've been anxious to hit the "reset" button and get on to a new beginning (using all of my lessons learned up to this point to make it the best possible). So this brown bear, shaking off the excess water weighing it down, seems quite appropriate for my last image shared in 2022.
Tonight is New Year's Eve ... I wish for everyone new beginnings for 2023 ... much love, happiness, good health, and peace. <3

we did some cleaning in the bar area and David was ready to toss these drink shakers.... I on the other hand knew I could use them for something... and added them to my bottle art in the garden and love the shine they add!
our theme at {in the picture} this month is "shake it out!" (inspired by this song).

A grebe does a little shake after climbing out of the water.
looking forward to spring and summer with these guys and hoping to be able to photograph some young grebes this year.
I heard the Ted Talk "embrace the shake" years ago, you can watch it at www.ted.com/talks/phil_hansen_embrace_the_shake#t-36932 We all some limitations though maybe not as extreme but instead of making excuses for not being able to do something because of them, embrace them and own it. The talk is worth a watch if you have 10 minutes to spare.
