Mostly out of curiosity, I downloaded the Reddit app and signed up. Much of what's on there makes me cringe or shake my head, but I've been spending time at their Photoshop subreddit. I've been learning some things as I look at what folks have submitted for critique. Composite photo montages are extremely popular there. Something many submitters ask is how to make an element blend better into the scene. Commonalities seem to be not paying attention to light sources, and not knowing much about shadows.
That prompted me to set up some things and shoot photos at various times of day to study contact shadows and cast shadows. This is one of the shots.
Mannequin's right foot is off the ground so there isn't a contact shadow there, but there are at the other foot and where parts of its body contact the ball and where the ball contacts the shelf.
I thought at first this would be a simple set up, but then I noticed that there is light reflected from the shelf upward onto the ball and mannequin, from the ball to the mannequin and from the mannequin to the ball.
New Mexico is a strange place for shadows. We're so high in elevation that in direct sunlight, shadows here don't behave the same as at lower elevations. The edges are more crisp. There isn't the same fall-off of density as the shadow gets farther from that which is casting it.
I had to shoot this photo before the sunlight directly hit the shelf in order to see the gradations of density.
Painters study light and shadows, but rarely do photographers. And if folks are going to be trying for photorealistic montage, they also need to know about light and shadows. As a result of these shadow study photos, back at Reddit I've been recommending that the compositors set up an action figure (all of them are guys in their teens and twenties it seems) and a desk lamp to see the directions that shadows are cast from a source and the gradations of density between contact and cast shadows and within cast shadows.

This is one of the few bikes shots I have taken outside of New Orleans. 1-33 have all been from the French Quarter. This one was taken just down the road from me, in Kentucky. It was parked outside of an ice cream parlor

I forgot I'd taken this one. My first whole day with my Canon, so just experimenting.
Taken at my pet sitting house. Dogs playing/fighting/chasing the cats and not at all interested in what I'm doing. I will get some decent shots of them soon, if only they would stay still.
Paul from America highlighted the shadows in my catacombs and Ulrike made such a good picture a shadow under a work of art. I took a similar photo to Ulrike's but can't find it and then came up with other interesting shadow photos that I reworked and made my own because the artist took colors I don't like.
In the exhibition of Lygia Pape lay on a table handicrafts of her, which one was allowed to touch. At first I thought well, I have already seen, cut cardboard connected with threads, so that it works like a mobile, unfortunately held in ugly brown-orange. Now there are countless light sources in such an exhibition space, often with different color temperature, the use of which is my specialty.
I took the cardboard work in hand and the (in one case 2 and in the other case many) parts began to move and resulted in a shadow on the table or, on the wall. I then photographed the shadows and show you the creator and shadow here. The shadow was much more spectacular than expected ...

Paul aus Amerika hob die Schatten in meinen Katakomben hervor und Ulrike hat so ein gutes Bild zu einem Schatten unter einem Kunstwerk gemacht. Ich habe so ein ähnliches Foto gemacht, wie Ulrike, finde es aber nicht und bin dann jedoch auf andere interessante Schattenfotos gekommen, die ich überarbeitet und mir zu eigen gemacht habe, weil die Künstlerin Farben genommen hat, die ich nicht mag.
In der Ausstellung von Lygia Pape lagen auf einem Tisch Bastelarbeiten von ihr, die man anfassen durfte. Zunächst dachte ich nun ja, habe ich schon gesehen, geschnittener Karton mit Fäden verbunden, so das er wie ein Mobile funktioniert, leider in hässlichem Braun-Orange gehalten. Nun gibt es in so einem Ausstellungsraum unzählige Lichtquellen, oft mit unterschiedlicher Farbtemperatur, deren Nutzung meine Spezialität ist.
Ich nahm die Kartonarbeiten in die Hand und die (in einem Fall 2 und im anderen Fall vielen) Teile begannen sich zu bewegen und ergaben einen Schatten auf dem Tisch bzw., an der Wand. Die Schatten habe ich dann fotografiert und zeige euch hier Urheber und Schatten. Der Schatten war viel spektakulärer als erwartet ...
das einfachere Mobile macht den interessanteren Schatten zumal meine Hand hinzu kommt, was mir auch sehr gut gefällt ...

I've been trying out some no border techniques lately, and this was one of my favourite ones. Hope you guys like it got some more stuff in the works. Schools really busy right now so not building much, but keep your eyes out for some new stuff.
Quiet Shadows Prissy will sit quietly, some times behind me like this shot, then leaves to find a nap spot, shot in North Carolina.

Today, the location from the previous photo, but from a different angle and in a different perspective.
Old tenement houses are surrounded by decaying wooden fuel cellars.
Nothing fancy in general, but for me, the light and shadows add a magical charm to this place.
