I knew I wanted Raphia and I knew I wanted Shade ,but it wasn't until I saw them as a couple on someone elses flickr account that I acutally considered them as a pairing. They are such a perfect pair!

This year, the patio umbrella has stayed in the garage. Why? May was bright and sunny, but then there was June Gloom, which hung on through most of July. Then there was Fogust - which has been persistently fogging and overcast except for maybe 2-3 hours in early afternoon. Soon it will be September and the sun is forecast to return on the 3rd. Maybe.

Taken in Marian R. Bear Memorial Park, in San Diego's San Clemente Canyon.

Many trees grow over the path to some degree, creating lots of shade.

I have been aware of this park for many years, and finally on May 7, 2011, made my first visit. It parallels state Route 52; traffic on the highway can be heard while one is in the park, but once past the entrance, the traffic is not seen.

It's a great walk; mostly flat with reasonably good surfaces, and lots of photographic opportunities. I'll definitely be going back.

The shade bed is maturing well this year - especially without the pagoda tree which dominated it until late last summer. There's quite a few other trees in there though - just waiting to get going, but they're hopefully a little less all-encompassing.
