More experiments with my lightbox and new mini-flash (see here www.flickr.com/photos/steveblackdog/4467110058/ ).

I thought I could optimise the performance of this tiny little unit and boy, was I in for a surprise.

It's probably not that clear in the photo so I had better give a written description.

The thing :-) mounted on top of the box is a clear thin plastic tube, about 9inches/225mm diameter and 6inches/150mm deep, which originally had a cake in it. Around this was stuck some strips of metallic tape. On top is a circle of white card with a window the size of the flash head cut in it. So in a effect, a reflector. Between this and the open top of the box, were sheets of white printer paper to diffuse the light. It is fairly easy to adjust the light output by adding extra sheets of paper to reduce the light. With a single sheet of white paper, I could get a good exposure upto ISO 100, f16 at 1/160, my max synch with radio triggers. Not bad for such a cheap little flash.

The result is here:

Had another go, much better DOF

www.flickr.com/photos/steveblackdog/4469540468/

Nikon D7100 mounted on a Manfrotto dual arm flash holder, two SB600 speed lights mounted to shoot from sides, ISO200, f/32, 1/200 sec using mirror up mode; 5 shots processed in Aperture and Topaz Denoise then output as TIFF and stacked together using Zerene, then tweaked with Topaz Adjust. Not as sharp as I'd like but I just got this setup going today. Will get better with time.

Setup shot for these 2 shots. Notes should explain everything.

Setup for this photo for Macro Mondays.

Here you can see the ad hoc tower of random stuff that makes for a shooting platform around here.

Lighting Setup for this and this

Full story here

Setup for insects in flight. This setup take pictures of insects inflight. An optical extra lens system is added to look for insects in focus. Only 40 usec are needed to check if there are objects in focus.

This unit works on reflected laserlight. No more leaserbeams are needed, no more long arms to put the receivers on the top of the system. The full distance is now free between camera and insects. The unit works in full dark or even in full bright sun. Sensivity can by adjusted by mean of a simple potmeter. To work in full dark 2 to 4 extra high power leds are added. 2 of this high power leds are UV leds at 405nm. This UV light attrack some insects inflight.

Today the first real live tests are done. This works realy nice. At this time no insects are available considering the winter periode here. Focus distance can by adjusted to every value. The focus range of the detector is very narrow. 1 to 2 mm at a distance of 700 mm form the camera. Objects of 2 mm diameter can by easily detected. Detector works also on full black insects. 4 lasers are used, 2 IR 5 mw lasers at 850 nm and 2 x 10 mw green lasers. The green lasers are only for visual position to the insects.

All electronics are mounted into the frame. One CPLD board is used and 2 boards with an AVR controller. The information from the optical system are fast transmitted from the AVR controller to the CPLD board. An 2x16 character LCD display give the status from the system. value of the batterys, value of the high voltage for the electro magnet at 150V, sensivity of the focus detector, width of the digital filter used, value of the environment light, value of the laser return light and expired time between start camera and moment of the picture.

Setup shot for all the Glowing Dumbells shots, the notes ought to answer any questions.

Not pictured is the camera very firmly clamped to a big studio tripod, and fired via a cable release.

Nothing very complex here and ignore the shadow to the right of Gromit and his booty.

Base is a sheet of white plastic, that has yellowed a bit with age and needs a clean :)

I didnt want it too white here so that it was seperated from the white of the bags and look more like a floor.

Lighting is provided by a 11watt CFL bulb mounted in a Pringles snoot with a grid in the end made up with black drinking straws. See my "Pringles" set for more info at www.flickr.com/photos/steveblackdog/sets/72157625717341909/

Dark cards were placed behind to prevent any unwanted light spills, though the exposure took care of that really.

The result can be seen below:

This is the setup for This Shot By David "Strobist" Hobby. From his Lighting Class in Los Angeles

North West London.

1 yn460ii from the right behind diffuser (white plexy).

1 yn460ii with grid to background.

1 white reflector to the left.

Back to playing with coloured paper in my DIY difussion screens again :)

Two screens were clipped together with some clothes pegs and located behind the subject. Then in front of them, an A4 sheet of black card directly behind the subject, which were placed on a sheet of clear acrylic with the underside painted black.

To help give a little more light, outside of each screen, a white card reflector was added to increase the size of the light source. This also had the added bonus of bringing the light further forward, allowing it to wrap around the subject more, reducing the dark area in the centre. This has given me some ideas to play around with the lighting postion forther ;-)

The light was provided by a pair of Neewer SF-01 mini slave flashes located behind the central black card and fired by Blazzeo SLT-4 radio triggers.

Not shown in the shot, I used a Yongnuo SYD-0808 video light to illuminate the area for composition and focussing. Even at increased aperture settings used for this setup shot, there is no sign of the light from the video light, easily being overpowered by the flashes.

Setup for the headshot of Sam. I had to hire in extra radio triggers at this point (first shot of the week) as the optical slaves on my aged flashheads were playing up in the bright daylight. Luckily a very speedy despatch from North London to the location saved me from spending the week trailing cables and peanut slaves all over the place.

As always, the notes do the talking.

I didn't have a budget for an umbrella braket or a light stand, so I made it from "scratch":

A vivitar 285hv is attached to an IKEA lamp stand. The umbrella was found on ebay, I attached another (dismounted) black umbrella to the back to bounce.

I have no idea what this yellow thingy are called. I found them 8 for 1£ at the pound land in York. It's a sort of hard metal cable you can bend with some foam around. You can grip it around whatever comes to your mind.

It's a bit more versatile than simple ball bungees as they still have some rigidity, so for example, you can use them to attach and direct an umbrella.

They are sold to attach things together when doing DIY jobs. If you have any idea of what it can be...

MacBook Pro, U2211h, Visidec monitor arms, IKEA desk.

Very simple setup.

This is the setup plan for April 2019.

I may not have any other pictures of this setup because the Ottawa river is flooding my house and I am not able to go sorry.

Setup for studio shot (in comments)

setup used with most of the stacks

Here's the setup shown previously, in the location we ended up using. I would have preferred someplace with a better background, but this is basically what the person organizing it wanted. At least it was a clean, uncluttered background.

Setup for:

RX600, 5.0, 21cm reflector, rear camera left to light white background.

RX600, 5.0, 21cm reflector, rear camera right to light white background.

Triggered by Skyport Speed.

Three phone pictures showing the setup. Above: elinchrom striplight with a lighttools grid on a BXRi. Two black screens to block flare from the softboxes in the back that you can see in the bottom picture on the right. The Ranger RX is also showing in the bottom right picture. It has symmetrical output so both softboxes output the same amount of light. With enough distance between the subject and the background, the gray paper backdrop will go completely black - even at f2.8 with a ND filter.
