This is what we shot for the catalog cover (the full catalog photo session: www.akelstudio.com/blog/studio-lighting-setup-for-a-unifo... ), a close-up shot of one of the catalog boots. Customer wanted to show the boot on a cove and wanted to have the most rich, tasty and sexy (here I’ve run out of my English vocabulary :) look possible. They selected that high black rigid boot with their logo on the front to be shown, all on the black background.

Studio setup for Possabilities shoot.

setup for this

Lighting: SB-600, TTL metering, I forget the zoom (85mm?)

Here's the setup for this shot. I didn't have a lot of room to work with (there's a pile of video game consoles and controllers just off camera to the right), so the setup is a lot closer to the wall than I would have liked. So, I dealt with it and let the light spill onto the wall to create a flat background.

The nitpicky details:

Vivitar 285HV in a shoot-through umbrella on top. Nikon SB-600 in a shoot-through umbrella on the bottom. Nikon D70 with a 50mm/1.8 on a tripod between the umbrellas. All connected via Cactus V2 wireless.

My temporary setup for my Mac Mini until some new "furniture" comes in. I'll be sure to upload a new pic ASAP once I have one. Either way, right now my Mac Mini is sitting on top of a laptop fan which I have placed on my Xbox. All in all, the setup is still far smaller then the Xbox. You can also see the Apple Remote, my 3G iPod, and my iPod Shuffle.

My new office setup, including my MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz 2 GB, LaCie external HD 250 GB, Griffin Elevator, Apple wired keyboard and Apple wireless Mighty Mouse.

Showing the setup from the front doesnt always give the true story of how the lighting works. So I'm hoping this aerial view might help to show how this darkfield lighting is done. It is worth noting, an additional light was added to the front for this setup shot, to show the components a little better with all the black around :)

Lurking behind this are 3 x 20W CFL lamps. A bare bulb hidden by the black card behind the glass, which is flanked either side by another pair in Pringles tube reflectors lying on the table just below the shelf, pointing back at the white card background.

To the sides are a pair of V shaped screens, with black cards attached to the sides pointing forward and white cards on the sides facing the background. These form the channel through which the light passes from the background onto the glass.

Lurking in the gloom at the front and dificult to see in the dark (you might need to view this large) are another couple of sheets of black card, folded into a V shape to stand up, which help prevent reflections from the rest of the room appearing on the front of the glass.

Now if you can make sense of that lot, well done ;-)

Note: A stunt double bottle was used in this setup shot. One SB800 behind shoot through umbrella. Two SB800's on stands bounced off ceiling. All fired via pocket wizards.

Setup for the 'Food Photography' shooting @ home. Thanks to Leopold for borrowing his softbox.

Hastily put together setup to try out the idea, little did I expect how polished the result would be :)

Light is provided by a Yongnuo YN460 set to 1/8th power into the mark2 version of my mini softbox providing the backdrop. The flash and radio trigger can just be seen in the gloom behind.

Out front, a polythene business card box with a CD case on top (note how dirty it is here) to provide the reflective surface.

Thats about it, not sure if the results would have been any better if I had taken the time to set it up properly with nicely polished glass, might yet try it, but doubt that the results would be any better.

One of my favourite setups for product type shot, probably because it is difficult to get a bad result :)

Starting from the table up, a glass shelf with the underside painted black, raised above the table by approx 6inches/150mm on blocks of black foam rubber. This is to enable a light with snoot to be located below. In this case, an 11watt spiral type CFL lamp inserted into a Pringles tube snoot.

On top of the shelf, a pair of 20watt stick type CFL lamps in Pringles tube reflectors, behind DIY screens of tracing paper to diffuse the light.

The screens are also fitted with black card flags, to restrict the light from spilling onto the backdrop, plus also at the front so I can see what I'm doing rather than having the lights in my eyes.

The backdrop, which is about 9inches/225mm behind the subject is a sheet of flourescent pink card attached to a black backdrop.

Hope that all makes sense, in conjunction with the picture.
