Founded in 1811, Astoria was the first European-American settlement in modern-day Oregon, and the first permanent settlement within the contemporaneous territory of the United States west of the Rocky Mountains. The city is near the site of Fort Clatsop, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1805-1806, which helped to chart the territory in the modern-day Northwestern United States, as well as establish the United States’s territorial claims to the Pacific Northwest. The city is located on the south shore of the Columbia River Estuary, which forms a protected harbor just inland from the Pacific Ocean, and was named for John Jacob Astor, a prominent New York City-based businessman whom founded Fort Astoria for the American Fur Company, which later grew into the present city. The city had the first US Post Office established west of the Rocky Mountains in 1847, and was incorporated in 1856, with the city growing as a port along the Pacific Coast, with an economy based on fishing, fish canning, and lumber, as well as a large brewery. The city today has an economy based mostly on tourism and ocean trade, with a deepwater harbor and many historic sites that attract trade and visitors.

June 28, 2018 - The Settlement Center which opened in May 2006 is located in two of Borgarnes’s oldest buildings the oldest dates from 1878. We had lunch here first then walked through the exhibition.

"This exhibition provides insight into the settlement of Iceland. It tells how the land was discovered, how the Viking sailors conquered the open ocean and why they left their homelands in Norway. It tells of the first men to set foot on the island and how the land was settled up to the establishment of the first parliament in the world, the Althing, at Thingvellir in 930AD. Multi-media and theatrical techniques are employed to help the visitor experience first hand the trepidation and exitement of setting off over the open ocean for lands unknown." Settlements are all over the West Bank. In every single UN peace accord, it is stated that the construction of settlements within Palestinian territories must be halted, and in some cases dismantled. Despite this these settlements continue to be built and protected by the Israeli army.

The Culbertson Back Country Settlement is on a beautiful two-acre circle on the old Georgia Road in Gray Court, just in front of the old Gray Court cemetery on the hill. The road was an old wagon road to Georgia that once was traveled by stagecoach to the Dorroh Inn just down the road. The Settlement consists of two log cabins, a block house, a one-room African-American school, corn crib, 1882 church, and a blacksmith shop. All of these structures have been given to the society and were in need of rescue.

'Settlement' madeinroath.com/2014/10/settlement/

Why am I Here:

My only brief was to bring to it what I liked. So I took the working title 'Why Am I Here'. I aimed to isolate the individual, in moment, within reflection, isolation, interaction. Posing the question ‘what brings me here, what do I require, what will I take away, will I return, do I identify.
