Church of St Servus with its four precarious-looking pillars of stone built in the 4th century AD on the foundations of an unidentified pre-Roman temple.

One of North Africa's best-preserved ancient Roman cities, Sufetula is awash with temples, monumental arches and bath complexes that speak of an ancient civilisation that knew how to live.

Archaeological site of Sbeïtla , ancient Sufetula. Sbeïtla is renowned for its three temples dedicated to the gods of the Capitoline Triad: Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. In addition, the place has a theater, a bath complex, churches, a triumphal arch and forts from the Byzantine era.

The surrounding countryside proved ideal for olive growing, and Sufetula quickly waxed wealthy, building its finest temples in the 2nd century, when the town – like all of Roman Tunisia – was at the height of its prosperity. Fortuitously, its olive groves ensured that Sufetula continued to prosper long after other Roman towns slipped into decline, helping it to become an important Christian centre in the 4th century.

The Byzantines made Sufetula their regional capital, transforming it into a military stronghold from where they could tackle the area’s rebellious local tribes. It was here in AD 647 that Prefect Gregory declared himself independent of Constantinople. However, his moment of glory lasted only a few months before he was killed by the Arabs, who simultaneously destroyed much of Sufetula.

The old Servus Rubber plant in Rock Island Illinois. This opened up in 1922 and closed in January 2010; it remains empty today. At its height in the early 1940's it employed 1500 people making boots for soldiers fighting World War II. In the later 1940's it made Gene Autry cowboy boots for kids; and Gene did ads for them. He visited and toured the plant in 1951 and I saw him during this visit as he was in a parade downtown. The late 1930's Tim Moore worked the night shift in this plant. During the early 1950's he played Kingfish on the TV Amos & Andy Show.

"Servus Munich! I was lucky enough to get a cloud-free pass over Europe recently and take a few photos. The capital of Bavaria is Germany's third largest city and has a lot to offer. From up here, striking landmarks or buildings help me identify cities on Earth. High above Munich, you can easily recognise the Munich Airport the English Garden, the famous Theresienwiese, the Olympic Park and Nymphenburg Palace Park. And if you know it, you can also spot TUM Garching and the European Southern Observatory, who work with the ESA - European Space Agency on space research and observation."

This species occurs through much of North America, though more common from Rockies, eastward. It has indiscriminate tastes, as witnessed by: the most economically important species of the genus in our area, may damage soybean, corn, cotton, alfalfa, sorghum, fruit, pecan, and tobacco -- BugGuide

Long a narrow alley connecting the tombs N. 2 and N. 3, there are some small sepultures. The most important is a stele made as a small aedicule, and dedicated by Nunnius to himself, to his wife Ma and to their son Crescens.

The following inscription is carved on the lower part of the stele:

Nummius Neronius / Clau(di) Caes(aris) ser(vus) saltuar(ius) / sibi et Ma / uxori suae et Crescenti / filio suo bene merentibus.

The status of “servus saltuarius” of Nero qualifies Nemmnius as a slave assigned to an imperial estate. Ma, the name of his wife, identifies a deity worshiped in Cappadocia and in the near Orient.

The upper part of the stele is decorated with two bust portraits representing Crescens and Ma. The child shows a bob cut, while the hairstyle of the woman is in the manner of Agrippina Minor, the mother of Nero. A small pediment decorated with two birds drinking from a bowl, closes the stele. Two amphorae are enbedded in the earth just in front of the stele; they have been probably used for the introduction of libations offered to the deaths during the days dedicated to their cult.
