Peacekeepers serving with the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) continuously repair and improve roads to better protect civilians and enable the delivery of humanitarian aid. In Upper Nile State, severe flooding has displaced many residents and rendered the vital 170 km supply route between Malakal and Renk near-impassable, obstructing access to essential services and disrupting livelihoods. UNMISS engineers from India are therefore working to rehabilitate this road, with the maintenance efforts expected to be completed by February 2025.

I took the audio guide to tour the ship, which has a series of pre-programmed stops, where the audio commentary (available in a range of languages) explains what you see and includes interviews with people who used to work there. As there were no events taking place at the time I had chosen, one of the volunteers also took me into the public rooms and explained a lot of details to me that I would not have noticed without her. I was greatly impressed with the way it is done now.

I am serving as a volunteer for the 2018 United Way Campaign at the University of Michigan. We had a kickoff breakfast on Wednesday September 26th at the Junge Family Champions Center between Michigan Stadium and the Crisler Center. The breakfast featured remarks by Co-Chairs Cynthia Wilbanks (Vice President, Government Relations) and Tony Denton (Senior Vice President and COO, University of Michigan Health System, Michigan Medicine); Pam Smith (President, United Way of Washtenaw County) and Susan Smith (Director of Resource Development, United Way of Washtenaw County). The featured speaker was Dr. Luke Shaefer (Director of Poverty Solutions at the University of Michigan and Associate Professor of Social Work and Public Policy). With a goal of $1.3 million dollars - time to get going! The campaign runs from October 1st through December 31st. Taken on Wednesday September 26th, 2018.
Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles hosted a Kentucky Hunger Initiative dinner, Serving Up Solutions, Feb. 8 in Frankfort. The dinner was started as a way to fundraise for agencies across the state who provide resources for those who are food insecure. Proceeds benefit Feeding Kentucky, Kentucky Hunters for the Hungry (KHFH), and Glean Kentucky.
