The annual infestation of Pine Trees (Pinus Pinea) by the processionary caterpillar begins to take effect in the end of summer.

This pest, which is found mainly in Mediterranean and Atlantic regions, causes extreme damage to the pine trees and also worrying skin irritations on humans and animals.

ECOSSISTEMAS has devised a biological product composed of bacteria, “Bacillus Thuringiensis”, which has no toxicity to people and the environment.

It is advisable that this treatment is initiated in the autumn to prevent the caterpillar from hatching in January and causing maximum damage.

If you are interested in treating your pine trees then please do not hesitate to contact us.Red Palm Weevil

A phyto-sanitary team from ECOVIVEIROS Garden Centre, was called out after concerns from a worried client that their majestic palm tree (a Phoenix Canariensis, 8mtrs tall), was showing extreme signs of wilting and distress. On examination, it was discovered to be slowly dying due to an infestation of Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus Ferrugineus), an extremely preoccupying situation, as this shows that this pest which originated in India in 1891, and has over the last two centuries, been found in Egypt, Arabian Gulf countries, Spain (2004) has now arrived to Portugal, most notably, Albufeira and Silves area in the Algarve.

The Red Palm Weevil is the most dangerous and deadly pest of Date, Coconut, Oil, Sago and other Palms. There is no cure, only prevention.

Until the 1970´s, the pest was found only in the tropics.

Since then it has destroyed the following:

1984 - Arabian Emirates – 200,000 palms

1987 - Saudi Arabia – 200,000 palms

1993 - Egypt – 270,000 palms

1995 - Malaga – 2000 palms

2004 - Valencia – 220 palms

This is an extremely worrying situation, as a large proportion of this insect arriving to the European continent is due to the importation of palm trees from Egypt, where 22 out of 26 regions of the country are affected by the red palm weevil. In Spain, in 2004, an embargo was declared, prohibiting the sale of Valencian palm trees, which is the capital of Palm tree production in Europe.

The transport of palms from already infected areas has contributed to the spread of this pest. Strict quarantine at international and national levels should be applied.

The weevil, of which in adult stage can be recognised by its very reddish, orange colour, commences flight when temperatures reach between 25º - 40º. It dislikes light, therefore it is difficult to detect, as it buries itself into the interior of the palm tree, where the female then lays between 200 – 300 eggs, which are the size of a grain of rice.

All stages (life cycle) are spent inside the palm. After the female lays the eggs, they hatch in 2-5 days into larvae (1.4cms in length), which then feed on the soft interior tissues of the palm. This larval period varies between 1-3 months, where the larvae then pupate inside an oval, cylindrical cocoon, made from fibrous strands, and dark brown in colour. After about 14 – 21 days, the adult weevil emerges.

There is no effective biological cure for this pest. The best method is preventative. The crowns of palm trees should be cleaned regularly, to prevent the accumulation of dead and decaying leaves. Avoid cuts and injuries to the palm. When cutting green leaves, cut them about 120cm away from the base. All dead palms or palms beyond recovery should be cut and burned to eradicate the pest inside.

The weevils can also be trapped by luring them into a trap bucket called a “Saudi Trap.” This is a 15lt bucket with sturdy walls with a 4cm diameter opening which contains a 5cm solution of water, sugar and a carbolic based insecticide and pieces of palm stem. This is then fixed to the trunk of the palm about 1.5m from the base. This pest is extremely difficult to detect without a thorough examination of the tree. We can be alerted to its presence by a sad, wilting appearance of the palm and new leaves showing a reddish colour.

have a team on hand to deal with all enquiries, and have already alerted the Ministry of Agriculture, where they are working in close conjunction to devise a plan on the controlling of this pest.

In 1962, the US Navy issued a requirement for an eventual replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk. Of the proposals submitted by various companies, Vought’s design won the competition in February 1964. What became the A-7 Corsair II was based on the already successful F-8 Crusader fighter, a decision which figured heavily in the Navy’s selection of the aircraft. The A-7, however, was smaller and shorter, with a much less sleek fuselage but a larger wing. It was the first operational American aircraft to use a turbofan engine, a HUD, and an internal INS linked to the bombing radar, permitting very accurate bombing in all weathers. After a remarkably trouble-free development, the YA-7A first flew in September 1965 and entered service a year later, with a combat debut in December 1967 over Vietnam. Because the A-4 was more maneuverable, the A-7 only supplemented the Skyhawk in US Navy service until the early 1980s; likewise, it was not chosen by the US Marine Corps for the light attack role, as the Marines preferred upgraded A-4s and later the AV-8A/B Harrier series.

The USAF, however, would acquire the A-7 in large numbers, at first as an interim to bridge the gap between the F-105 Thunderchief and the F-111 Aardvark, and to replace the ancient A-1 Skyraiders then serving as COIN, close air support, and rescue support aircraft. The A-7D made a number of changes, including USAF-style boom/plug refueling port, the more reliable and powerful Allison TF41 engine, and deletion of the A-7A’s twin 20mm cannon for a single M61A1 Vulcan 20mm gatling cannon. The A-7D entered USAF service in September 1968, and its combat service over Vietnam impressed the US Navy enough that the follow-on A-7E Corsair II incorporated both the TF41 engine and the M61A1 gun armament. Aside from the two-seat TA-7C/A-7K conversion trainers and EA-7L electronic warfare trainers, the A-7E was the penultimate Corsair II variant. Vought proposed an advanced, supersonic long-range strike variant, the A-7F, but this only went to the prototype stage.

The A-7 served in every conflict the United States entered into from 1968 to 1991, including Vietnam, operations against Lebanon, Libya, and Iran in the 1980s, and the First Gulf War. The latter was the swansong for the type in US service, with only two US Navy A-7E squadrons seeing service. With the drawdown of the 1990s, the A-7D was rapidly retired from USAF and Air National Guard units in favor of the F-16 Falcon; the A-7E left US Navy service in favor of the F/A-18 Hornet. The aircraft was exported in the 1970s to Greece as the A-7H and Portugal as the A-7P, both of which saw service in the Third World War. Thailand received ex-US Navy A-7Es in the mid-1990s. Greece retired the last operational A-7s in the world in 2014.

(The following is a fictional history of a fictional naval air arm.)

With the adoption of the US Navy-style carrier battlegroup by the FIRN/FIRNAA in the late 1970s, the FIRNAA also adopted the Navy-style carrier air wing of F-14 Tomcats, A-6 Intruders, and A-7 Corsair IIs. The latter were deemed to be of low priority, with the FIRNAA acquiring and upgrading ex-US Navy A-4E Skyhawks, and there was some controversy over the need to buy the A-7 at all. The sale went through because of the A-7’s ability to carry more ordnance further, and the first order for 36 A-7Es and five two-seat TA-7Cs were placed in 1985. As the A-7 production line had closed by that time, these came from ex-US Navy stocks and were refurbished before delivery; the only addition to the aircraft was a Pave Penny laser designator, which allowed the A-7E to drop precision guided weaponry. TA-7Cs were also in short supply, so instead Vought converted five ex-USAF A-7Es to A-7K standard, though these aircraft had a bulged refuelling probe and were designated TA-7K. (The TA-7K retained its boom/plug system, making it a “hermaphrodite.”) The first FIRNAA A-7E entered service in August 1986 with NAS-17, and both it and NAS-18 were fully operational with the Corsair II before the end of the Third World War. The last batch entered service with NAS-19, with the last being delivered in July 1988. These aircraft would provide yeoman service during the First Gulf War.

Though the United States was rapidly retiring the A-7, the FIRNAA decided to keep the aircraft due to its range instead of acquiring more F/A-18 Hornets. Because of its lack of speed and the desire to keep the aircraft in service at least until 2005, the FIRNAA commissioned a study to upgrade its Corsair IIs. Vought had gone out of business by this time (1993), but the A-7F study was resurrected and the contract given to Predator Propulsion. Initially designated A-7P (for Predator Propulsion, but dropped due to confusion with the Portuguese A-7Ps) and then A-7S, this upgrade included completely updating the avionics, with a new HUD system, LANTIRN compatibility, the ability to carry the AGM-84 Harpoon and AGM-84E SLAM, and most importantly, the A-7F’s Pratt and Whitney F100 turbofan. Since the A-7S lacked the lengthened fuselage and modified tail of the A-7F, the engine was derated to 24,000 pounds, though the afterburner was retained. This increased the top speed and range of the A-7E, as the F100 was more fuel efficient. The first A-7S flew in July 1994 and entered service in December 1995; by 1996 the entire fleet had been upgraded.

Despite the expense of the upgrade, the A-7S’ career was to be brief. The decision to acquire the F/A-25 Rafale to replace it was made only two years after the A-7S entered service, and it began to be withdrawn from service in 1999. The outbreak of war in Afghanistan and Iraq only delayed withdrawal for a short time, though the A-7S would fly combat missions in what was the Corsair II’s final combat deployment. Both NAS-17 and NAS-18 would convert to the Rafale, while NAS-19 retained it’s A-7s until the squadron’s disbandment in 2004. The last FIRNAA Corsair IIs made a four-ship flypast of Viper Lake IFAAS in August 2004, marking 18 years of faithful service. Eleven A-7s were lost during the aircraft’s career, six in combat during the Third World War and the First Gulf War, and the remainder in accidents; these were replaced from US Navy stocks, making total procurement 52 aircraft.

(Back in the real world...)

Though I prefer 1/144 scale for my own personal models, there is not yet a 1/144 kit of the A-7; Tamiya, however, makes a 1/100 kit. After finding one in Indiana in 2010, I built it out of the box as a standard A-7E. I used a darker gunship gray over medium gray color scheme (which would probably be unworkable for carrier operations in real life). I used kit decals, but the tailcodes and crocodile tail motif were hand-painted. It is armed with 12 Mk 82 750-pound bombs and two AIM-9B Sidewinders, which were not as difficult to put on as I had originally thought.

Birth and family…………….

The birth of a Lawrance George Billing was registered with the Civil Authorities in the Derby District of Derbyshire in the April to June quarter, (Q2), of 1898.

On the 1901 Census of England & Wales the 3 year old Lawrence G Billing, born Derby, was recorded living at 49 St Thomas Road, Derby. This was the household of his grandparents Joseph Bull, (aged 67, a Farm Labourer, born Derby) and Mary Bull, (aged 68, born Plantington?, Derbyshire). Living with them is their married daughter Ellen Billing, (aged 25, born Derby) and a granddaughter Priscilla N Billing, (aged 1, born Derby).

On the 1911 Census of England and Wales the 13 year old Lawrance George Billing was residing at 118 Rutland Street, Derby. This was the household of his parents George, (aged 39, a Clerk at the Loco Works of the Midland Railway Company, born Church Broughton, Derbyshire), and Ellen, (35). The couple have been married a very precise 13 years and 10 months ! They have had three children – all then still alive. As well as Lawrance these were Priscilla Norah, (11) and Dorothy Mary, (6).

The most likely marriage of his parents occurred in Derby in the April to June quarter, (Q2), of 1897 when a George Billing married an Ellen Bull.

A check of the General Registrars Office Index of Birth for England and Wales 1911 – 1983 shows no likely additional children of George and Ellen.

Lawrance would potentially have been old enough to have served in the Great War. There is a medal index Card of a “Lawrence “ G Billing who was initially 55602 / 34200 in the Leicestershire Regiment before switching to the Royal Engineers as first WR/553547 and then Sapper 259042. His medals, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, were issued by the Royal Engineers. That combination would normally indicate he did not serve in a Theatre of War until some point after the 1st January 1916.

Marriage and children……………………

The marriage of a “Lawrence” G Billing to a Hettie L Cooley took place in the Shardlow District of Derbyshire in the July to September quarter, (Q3), of 1920.

A check of the General Registrars Office Index of Birth for England and Wales 1911 – 1983 shows potentially three children of Lawrance and Hettie, all registered with mothers’ maiden name Cooley.

1939 National Register…………………..

The 1939 National Register was a mini-census which was used to do a stocktake of the nations’ skills, (with the view to making best use of the available resources in the event of war) and as the basis for the issue of ID cards and ration books. After the war it was used as a register for the National Health Service and continued to be used until the system was computerised in the early nineties. Known deaths and change of name were manually captured. It was this part of the register that entered the public domain via a Freedom of Information request. However entries where the person were still believed to be alive at the time the manual system was closed down and if they were less than a 100 years old were officially closed. Layout also leaves much to be desired, with location restricted to the relevant Urban or Rural District Council rather than village, town or city. It also doesn’t set out relationships, so these need to be inferred.

A married man, Lawrence G Billing, born 28th March 1898, was recorded as the fifth and last person in the household of Thomas & Mary French at 50, Manor Way, Mitcham, Surrey. His occupation is given as Corporal 7354206 R.A.M.C. (Royal Army Medical Corps). Strangely my understanding was that serving personnel were not included in the 1939 register and as it was taken on the 26th September 1939 the reservists and Territorial Force men would have been mobilised by then. Why he was living apart from his wife and children is unknown.

On the day…………………………………

The first report of him in the British Casualty List, (No.1054) records him serving in the Royal Army Pay Corps and as missing on or after the 1st December 1942 “At Sea”. Other men is the same category are:

Acting Captain 166003 A.E. Taylor, Middlesex Regiment

War Substantive Captain 128969 J C Manning, Royal Army Medical Corps.

(There may have been more on previous pages).

A subsequent report records that he is now presumed Killed in Action on or after the 1st December 1942.

A small piece appeared in the edition of the Derby Evening Telegraph dated Friday, August 13 1943.

LT. L.G. BILLING BELIEVED KILLED

Lieut. Lawrence G. Billing, of the Royal Army Pay Corps, who lived at Reginald-road, Chaddesden, up to the time of joining up, is officially reported as “believed killed on active service.” He was 45.

Lieut. Billing volunteered during the latter part of last year for overseas service.

He joined the Army at the outbreak of the war and served with the RAMC in a hospital ship, taking part in the evacuation from Dunkirk. He was later with the Wiltshire Regiment and was then transferred to the R.A.P.C.

IN CINEMA ORCHESTRAS

Before the war he was employed in Derby Corporation Electricity Department. He was a well-known ‘cellist and before the advent of talking films he played in local cinema orchestras.

He leaves a wife, who is now living with her parents ay Hadleigh, Suffolk, two sons and a daughter. His sister. Mrs. D.M. Walker, lives at 42, Borrowfield-road, Spondon.

Of the other two men on that list:-

A loss at sea would tend to indicate either Royal Navy Ship or submarine, Merchant Ship or aircraft loss in unexplained circumstances. Additionally leisure sailing can’t entirely be ruled out. I couldn’t find any likely report of a missing submarine although that could be recorded on either the date of departure, date it last signalled or the date it failed to return \ reach destination. Aircraft is simpler as it could not stay aloft for days but even still I checked a day either side, including civil losses, but could find no contenders.

While the Royal Navy did lose ships on this day, including an Australian frigate in the Pacific where survivors were known to be on a raft on subsequent days but could not be found by rescue craft guided to the area, it seems difficult to imagine why Lawrance would have been aboard.

Similarly there are cargo ship losses on this day but nothing to indicate British military personel aboard other than Royal Navy men manning the defensive armament. So possibly it was not in fact a total ship loss that led to their death.

For now the circumstances of his death remains unknown.

He does not appear to be remembered at Chaddesden.

Dodgiest yumcha ever! So much for Hongkong-style dimsum.

Our first item was a spongey 带子豆腐 scallop with beancurd, as if it was refrozen. That was followed by an ok 鲜腐竹卷 beancurd rolls, followed by a sticky gooey 朝州粉果 Teochew dumplings.

Then another dodgy 咖喱鱿鱼 squid in curry sauce that was mushy, and some ok 叉烧包 BBQ Pork Buns. The 蛋嗒 egg tarts were stone cold. The cold dishes were spicy hot, or at least the 凉拌三丝 Sichuan Salad was, despite the waitress assuring us it was not. The 泡菜 pickled Chinese Cabbage was so salty it made our eyes water!

All the spongey, gooey, mushiness was probably and indicator of food being overcooked. Possibly leftovers that went back into the fridge or freezer and re-steamed the next day! At least none of us got the runs! :P

We finished with a super-sweet 豆腐花 Sweet Beancurd and some 红豆杯仔糕 Red Bean Rice Cakes that were floury and tasteless.

Maybe I'll go back for some more tastebud torture. Or maybe I won't.

Wallace Duncan and Chas. F. Scott. Iola Registers, Printers and Binders, Iola, Kan.: 1901; 894 p., [36] leaves of plates: ill., ports.; includes index.

DANIEL W. MAXSON.

DANIEL W. MAXSON is the leading physician in his section a Woodson county. No other medical practitioner of the county has so long resided within its borders and none more highly deserves success and prominence than Dr. Maxson. He was born in Alleghany county, New York, in January, 1836, and is a son of John Maxson, a farmer by occupation, who was born in Massachusetts and married Miss Ann Ruth Langworthy, a native of Rhode Island. They died in the Empire state, leaving two children, but the doctor is now the only surviving representative of the family.

The subject of this review spent the days of his boyhood and youth upon the home farm and acquired his education in the common schools. He afterward took up the study of medicine, which he pursued at intervals, in the meantime providing for his support by teaming and by other such work as he could get to do. In his early manhood he left for the west, going first to Wisconsin, whence he afterward went to Missouri, and later came to Kansas, arriving in the year 1856. He first located at Fort Scott, which at that time was only a military garrison, and subsequently he went to Mapleton, Bourbon county, where he was living when the Civil war broke out. He enlisted in response to the call for men to serve for ninety days, and later enlisted for three years as a memebr[sic] of the Ninth Kansas cavalry, serving in the Western Department. The first two years of that time were passed as a steward in the general hospital at Fort Smith. He was with his regiment on White river, Arkansas, when the war ended and was discharged at Fort Leavenworth in the year 1865.

The war ended, Dr. Maxson returned to Mapleton, Kansas. In the meantime he had resumed the study of medicine and had prepared for its practice. He had read to some extent under the direction of Dr. Norman D. Winans at Iola, Kansas, and for two years was associated with him in practice. He then took up his abode on the Verdigris river, where he has since remained, his home being now in Toronto. His practice comes not only from this town but also from Coyville and Buffalo and is quite extensive. He is the oldest physician in years of continuous practice in Woodson county, and as time has pased[sic] he has easily maintained his rank among the foremost physicians of this section of the state. He has kept abreast with the progress made by the medical fraternity, is a discriminating student, most careful in diagnosing disease and correct in prescribing the medicines which will best supplement nature in her efforts to restore a healthful and normal condition. Although he attended two courses of medical lectures, the last one in the Ohio Medical College, at Cincinnati, he did not consider his studies ended and constant reading has kept him in touch with the onward march of progress made in the medical science.

Dr. Maxson was married in Mapleton, in 1860, to Miss Louise E. Myrick, whose father came to Kansas from Tennessee. Mrs. Maxson died March 27, 1901. Unto them have been born the following children: W. E., who is superintendent of the terminals of the railroad and steamship lines at Galveston, Texas; Frank; Henrietta, wife of Charles Chambers, of Purcell, Indian Territory; Ralph, of Toronto, and Lillie A., of Toronto.

From the date of the organization of the Republican party Dr. Maxson has been in hearty sympathy with its principles and gives his support to its men and measures. He keeps well informed on the issues of the day and does all in his power to promote the growth and insure the success of the party. He is chairman of the Pension Examining Board of Woodson county, and is a loyal and patriotic citizen, who believes in upholding the starry banner of the nation wherever the courage and loyalty of the American soldier has planted it. The doctor has a very wide acquaintance throughout Woodson county where he has so long made his home and his many sterling traits of character as well, as his splendid work in the line of his profession have gained for him the confidence, good will and high regards of all with whom he has been brought in contact.

THE food industry is being squeezed from all sides. Last year prices for milk, eggs, corn, wheat, oils and almost all other edible commodities climbed to unprecedented levels. They are still rising, although at a slower pace. The prices of electricity and fuel are also on the increase, which makes processing and distribution more expensive. And passing on higher costs is not easy when customers too are feeling the pinch, as unemployment rises, the value of their homes falls, and inflation erodes their purchasing power.

In one sense, food is recession-proof, since people have to eat in good times and bad. What is more, over the past 30 years the share of food in American and European household spending has fallen from an average of 30% to less than 10%, so consumers do not care about price hikes as much as they did in the past. Even so, they are responding to the economic gloom by changing what they eat, where they eat and where they buy their groceries.

Martin Deboo, an analyst at Investec Securities, a stockbroker, uses the well-worn but apt analogy of the “perfect storm” to describe the industry's predicament. Those best positioned to weather it include multinational companies with diversified customer bases, such as Nestlé, Unilever and Danone, as well as retailers that focus on low prices, such as America's Wal-Mart. Among the losers are posh grocers such as Whole Foods Market, a firm based in Texas which specialises in fancy, often organic food (see chart). The downturn also hurts smaller companies that do not have the benefits of scale, depend too much on customers in a single country or region, and do not add much value to the commodities they process.

Nestlé, the world's biggest food firm, has so far coped well with the rise in commodity prices. Its sales around the world grew 7% last year compared with an average of 1.8% for the industry. Like most of its rivals, the firm has passed some of the price increases on to its clients. But it was better prepared for inflation than most. “We saw this coming, so we hedged by forward-buying raw materials,” says François-Xavier Perroud, Nestlé's spokesman.

Far-sighted and nimble sourcing, needless to say, has become more important than ever. Nestlé, which uses lots of milk making baby formula and chocolate bars, buys it under contract directly from farmers, rather than on the open market, where prices jumped by as much as 50% last year. It has also changed the recipe of some of its goodies to reduce their milk content.

But even clever purchasing is not enough to help makers of lightly processed or generic products, which tend to have slender margins. So Nestlé is getting out of the business of making basic wholesale products such as tomato purée and cocoa paste. It is also putting a huge pasta factory at Sansepolcro in Italy up for sale, though it will continue to use much of its output, and to sell fresh pasta dishes, sauces and other more profitable Italian products under the Buitoni brand.

Hold the soya oil

Kraft, one of America's biggest food firms, is struggling with the soaring prices of its ingredients. The cost of these jumped by 9% or $1.3 billion last year, taking a bite out of profits. The Illinois-based company says it is working hard to defray the extra expense by saving money elsewhere. But it believes its best defence against rising costs is to go on the attack, with products and marketing that are better suited to leaner times. For example, the company has changed the recipe and packaging of Miracle Whip, a salad dressing and sandwich spread that is advertised as having the taste of mayonnaise with half the fat. It now comes in a plastic jar instead of a glass one, and has a wider opening that allows buyers to scrape out the very last glob. It now contains less soya oil, which is both fattening and expensive, and more water, which is slimming and cheap.

Kraft has launched a new pizza called DiGiorno Ultimate, in an effort to lift its DiGiorno brand of frozen pizzas into what it calls the “super premium” category. The idea is to offer consumers a cheaper alternative to eating in pizzerias, which rack up $35 billion in sales each year in America. Customers seem to like it: the DiGiorno Ultimate accounted for a third of all sales of new sorts of frozen pizza last year. To keep the pizzas flying from the freezers this year, Kraft plans to offer individual servings of both its DiGiorno and California Pizza Kitchen brands, aimed at single people who might not enjoy a lonely meal at a pizzeria anyway.

American restaurants are also feeling the effects of the slowing economy, according to a spokeswoman for the National Restaurant Association. The industry is still growing: sales are still forecast to reach $558 billion in 2008. But the rate of growth, at 4.4%, is lower than in previous years. So far restaurant-goers are not cutting back too much on their restaurant visits, but they are spending less each time. Restaurateurs are trying to avoid passing the higher cost of ingredients on to customers by increasing productivity—by training waiters to double as kitchen hands, for example.

Cheap restaurants are becoming more popular. McDonald's, the biggest fast-food chain, did much better last year than the year before, though the firm says it is not sure whether to attribute this to higher food prices, revised menus or a redesign of many of its outlets. Its customers do not (yet) seem to be trading down to “value-priced” food, but then all the items on its menu cost less than $10.

Just to be on the safe side, McDonald's has come up with a whole menu of items that cost just $1. It has started an advertising campaign aimed at “Dollar Menunaires”. Its rivals have followed suit: Wendy's and Burger King are both selling double cheeseburgers for $1. Even Starbucks has plans for a $1 coffee.

Another firm that is thriving in the stormy environment is Wal-Mart, the world's biggest supermarket chain. It argues that its obsessive focus on low prices is in keeping with the straitened times. The firm is working with food producers to come up with ever-cheaper offers. “We aim to be, wherever possible, the first to lower prices and the last to raise them,” says a spokeswoman.

Food prices are likely to remain high for some time. The trends that are feeding the inflation, including increased demand from developing countries and the growing diversion of crops to make biofuels, show little sign of slowing. But necessity is the mother of invention; and the food industry seems to have no shortage of fresh recipes.

A self-described democratic socialist, he favors policies similar to those of social democratic parties in Europe, particularly those instituted by the Nordic countries. He caucuses with the Democratic Party and has been the ranking minority member on the Senate Budget Committee since January 2015.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sanders attended Brooklyn College before transferring to and graduating from the University of Chicago. While a student, he was a member of the Young People's Socialist League and active in the Civil Rights Movement as a protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In 1963, he participated in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

Sanders settled in Vermont in 1968, and ran unsuccessfully for Governor and U.S. Senator in the early to mid-1970s as a member of the Liberty Union Party. As an independent, Sanders was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont's most populous city, in 1981. He was reelected to three more two-year mayoral terms before being elected to represent Vermont's at-large congressional district in the United States House of Representatives in 1990. He served as a congressman for 16 years before being elected to succeed the retiring Republican-turned-independent Jim Jeffords in the U.S. Senate in 2006. In 2012, he was reelected by a large margin, capturing almost 71% of the popular vote.

Since his election to the Senate, Sanders has emerged as a leading progressive voice on issues such as income inequality, universal healthcare, parental leave, climate change, LGBT rights, and campaign finance reform. He rose to national prominence on the heels of his 2010 filibuster of the proposed extension of the Bush-era tax rates for the wealthy. Sanders is also outspoken on civil rights and civil liberties, and has been particularly critical of mass surveillance policies such as the USA PATRIOT Act, as well as racial discrimination in the criminal justice system. He has long been critical of U.S. foreign policy, and was an early and outspoken opponent of the Iraq War.

Sanders is a candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination for President in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
