Brigadier Paul Lokech, Ugandan Contingent Commander serving with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), hands out free mosquito nets to Somali civilians ina compound where Uganan doctors were providing free medical check-ups and treatment in the Kaaran district of the Somali capital Mogadishu. The free medical care and distribution of mosquito nets were part of a week-long programme called Tarehe Sita - Swahili for 6 February - which is the commemorative date that the Ugandan People's Defence Force (UPDF) was formed. Old St Stephen's Church in Fylingdales stands on a site with a long and significant history. Before the current Georgian church was built in 1821, an earlier medieval church occupied the location, serving the fishing and farming communities of Robin Hood’s Bay for centuries. The medieval church itself is thought to have had even older foundations, possibly dating back to the Saxon period, indicating a continuous place of worship on this site for over a thousand years.
The earlier church would have been a focal point for the local population, providing spiritual guidance and a connection to the sea, which shaped the lives of those who lived and died here. Evidence suggests that the medieval church was in poor condition by the early 19th century, leading to the decision to replace it with the present structure. Though the original building is long gone, its legacy remains in the churchyard, where ancient graves mark the resting places of generations of mariners, farmers, and villagers.
The current church, completed in 1821, preserves much of the traditional character of its predecessor while reflecting the simpler architectural style of its time. It features a classic ‘preaching box’ design with a six-bay nave, a small sanctuary, and an unadorned yet striking interior, complete with painted box pews, a gallery, and a three-decker pulpit. These features highlight the church’s emphasis on sermons and communal worship, much like its medieval forebear.
The churchyard is filled with gravestones bearing inscriptions that tell stories of hardship and loss, particularly among those who perished at sea. Many of these graves predate the current church, belonging to the older site that once stood here. Inside, memorials commemorate shipwreck victims and lifeboat rescues, reflecting the ever-present danger of the North Sea. A rare and poignant tradition preserved in the church is the display of 'maiden’s garlands,' delicate funeral decorations used for young, unmarried women, an echo of customs that may have existed in the medieval church before it.

This one was loaded on the back of a truck for repair; The driver confirmed that it's from House of Prime Rib. (As if there was any doubt.) The design of these things is incredible.

The operation saw SNA forces supported by AMSIOM push 3.5km further north from their previous forward defensive line along the industrial road to take the strategically important area of and around Mogadishu Univeristy, the very furthest northern point of the Somali capital and where the Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab planned and carried out attacks against the African Union mission, the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and targets within the Somali capital.. Day 115-So they installed these smart thingies in the hallways of my University (technically there is only 2) in the Main building. It's newer technology and I have used it once to see what it does and basically it is a digital directory. Cool gadget, touch screen and all that.

Having visited Portsmouth Historic dockyard in August 2017, it brought back many memories for me having sailed out from there in 1963 on H.M.S. Venus to the Azores. I was then a Cook in the Royal Navy serving at H.M.S Ganges in Suffolk. It was a cold winter day then and I was over the side of the ship scrubbing it clean before we sailed. Arriving at the entrance it was a bit disconcerting to see the queues of people waiting to get in. The queue took 40 minutes to allow where I was to arrive at the ticket gate. A bag search told me I was to leave my Monopod with them for safe keeping at the ticket office. This also applies to Tripods for camera equipment so remember this.

The city's history can be traced to Roman times. Special Palmerston Forts were built in 1859 in anticipation of another invasion from continental Europe. By the early-19th century, Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified city in the world, and was considered the world's greatest naval port at the height of the British Empire throughout Pax Britannica. The world's first mass production line was set up in the city, making it the most industrialised site in the world. The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the NAVY CROSS posthumously to GUNNERY SERGEANT JOHN BASILONE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following citation:
For extraordinary heroism while serving as a Leader of a Machine-Gun Section, Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. Shrewdly gauging the tactical situation shortly after landing when his company's advance was held up by the concentrated fire of a heavily fortified Japanese blockhouse, Gunnery Sergeant Basilone boldly defied the smashing bombardment of heavy caliber fire to work his way around the flank and up to a position directly on top of the blockhouse and then, attacking with grenades and demolitions, single handedly destroyed the entire hostile strong point and its defending garrison. Consistently daring and aggressive as he fought his way over the battle-torn beach and up the sloping, gun-studded terraces toward Airfield Number 1, he repeatedly exposed himself to the blasting fury of exploding shells and later in the day coolly proceeded to the aid of a friendly tank which had been trapped in an enemy mine field under intense mortar and artillery barrages, skillfully guiding the heavy vehicle over the hazardous terrain to safety, despite the overwhelming volume of hostile fire. In the forefront of the assault at all times, he pushed forward with dauntless courage and iron determination until, moving upon the edge of the airfield, he fell, instantly killed by a bursting mortar shell. Stouthearted and indomitable, Gunnery Sergeant Basilone, by his intrepid initiative, outstanding skill, and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of the fanatic opposition, contributed materially to the advance of his company during the early critical period of the assault, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout the bitter conflict was an inspiration to his comrades and reflects the highest credit upon Gunnery Sergeant Basilone and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
The Basilone Statue was sculpted by Philip Orlando, a childhood friend of John Basilone's who lived on Somerset Street in Raritan, New Jersey. The statue features Sergeant Basilone holding a water-cooled Browning machine gun.
John Basilone (November 4, 1916 – February 19, 1945) was a United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. He was the only enlisted Marine in World War II to receive both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.
He served three years in the United States Army with duty in the Philippines before joining the Marine Corps in 1940. After attending training, Basilone deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Solomon Islands and eventually to Guadalcanal where he held off 3,000 Japanese troops after his 15-member unit was reduced to two other men. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima, after which he was posthumously honored with the Navy Cross. He has received many honors including being the namesake for streets, military locations and a United States Navy destroyer. [Wikipedia]
There were some of the precious few remaining World War II Veterans in attendance at the parade. They were more than just heroes, they were God damned men!
I don't know how any male American citizen who hasn't served their country in the military can look at these heroes and not consider themselves a bit of a coward.
One of the hardest shots to learn - but well worth it when you hit great serves. As you can see the tossing arm goes up with the ball the contact point when you hit the ball must always be in front.
