The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" on the 9th of December is "Christmas decoration in black and white". What a perfect theme to have, because I had to look no further than my craft basket for inspiration.
This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year and give them as gifts. I take several photos of each one on my tree before I wrap them up, so that I have a visual record of what I have given to whom. This one has already winged its way half way across the world and arrived at its destination, where I hope it is now hanging with its counterparts on my friend’s Christmas tree.
I decided to use this shot for today's theme because without the distraction of colour, you will notice that my baubles feature different kinds of sequins: in this case, round one, stars and flowers. I know flowers are not necessarily something one associates with Christmas, however these are not ordinary Christmas baubles, even if I do say so myself. Each one takes between two and three hours to make, depending upon the complexity of the pattern. I do hope that you like my choice for the theme and that it makes you smile.
Taken for the Macro Mondays group "Stitch" Challenge. A small detail of sequins sewn on a Christmas stocking.
Circles, for Macro Mondays, cut from a small piece of sequinned cloth: small shiny discs sewn on to fabric for decoration.

I've always been enchanted by bright shiny things. I guess I'm easy to distract. ;)
Here's a bit of historical information gleaned from Wikipedia...."Evidence exists that gold sequins were being used as decoration on clothing or paraphernalia in the Indus Valley as early as 2500 BC, during the Kot Diji phase. Solid gold sequins sewn into royal garments were found inside the tomb of Tutankhamun.
During the 1920s, after the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, sequins witnessed a renewed popularity as a consequence of Egyptomania. The usage of sequins (typically made out of metal) were widely popularized as a fashion statement by flapper girls during this period."

Taken while looking for Sequins - a challenge in the Looking Close on Friday theme this week. I have no sequins in my wardrobe but I found loads of sequin encrusted clothes in Marks and Spencer. They look extremely uncomfortable to me and I wonder how many will be left for the January sales?
These were all gold and the red colour is the reflection of my phone cover!
Needless to say I didn’t buy!

HMM- the macromondays' theme for today is "in a row". i have two possibilities-- these rows are just over inch and a half inch tall, so axiomatically this picture is almost 2 inches wide.
For the Looking Close....on Friday group theme 'sequins' a busy time of year so take a breath and enjoy the festive season. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to you all ;0)
Looking close... on Friday! and Sequins
These Christmas ornaments are very decorative, but they have started to go bald because they are old and a lot of sequins has fallen off.

When it was my birthday six months ago, a very dear friend who enjoys photography as much as I do, and knows that I collect beautiful and vintage pieces, gave me a wonderful selection of antique ribbons, buttons, buckles, lace and other fine notions. She also gave me three follow up tins of similar delightful gifts for Christmas.
Those wonderful gifts are what has inspired me to create this series of "Embroider my World" images featuring my vintage bobbin collection. In this case, the wonderfully embroidered olive green Victorian or early Edwardian ribbon adorned with sequin covered paisley patterns from the Edwardian era comes from my own collection of antique notions. I have accessorised it on a 1930s embroidered tablecloth with a Dewhurst's Sylko Olive reel of cotton which dates from between 1938 and 1954.
Belle Vue Mill, commonly known as Dewhurst’s, was built by Thomas Dewhurst in 1828. It opened in 1829 as John Dewhurst & Sons and was one of Skipton’s largest spinning and weaving mills. The mill’s position next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal meant that raw cotton could be shipped in by boats from Liverpool. Finished goods would then be sent back the same way ready for distribution. Coal to power the machine’s steam engines was also delivered by barge. In 1897 Dewhurst’s was bought by the English Sewing Cotton Co. It continued to produce Sylko, one of the mill’s most famous products. It was produced in over 500 colours and sold throughout the world. Sylko cottons are still available at haberdashers today.
