I hope you have all had a great 2009 and I would like to wish you all a happy new year for tomorrow. (I'll be in London -- I may take some pictures to post on tumblr.) Anyway, thank you all for the continuous support that you've shown me this year, I really appreciate it. Bring on 2010! :)
This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year.
Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except for the small stars which are 3mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the hearts and stars until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.
These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.
It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

con veinte soles arriba.
¡Qué ríos puestos de pie
vislumbra su fantasía!

The nun embroiders wallflowers
on a straw cloth.
They fly in the gray spider,
seven birds of the prism.
The church growls in the distance
like a bear belly up.
How well you embroider! With what grace!
On the straw cloth,
she would like to embroider
fantasy flowers from her.
What a sunflower! what a magnolia
of sequins and ribbons!
What crocuses and what moons,
on the tablecloth of the mass!
Five grapefruits are sweetened
in the nearby kitchen.
The five wounds of Christ
cut in Almeria.
Through the eyes of the nun
Two horsemen gallop.
One last deaf rumor
she takes off his shirt,
and when looking at clouds and mountains
in the deserted distances,
she breaks her heart
of sugar and yerbaluisa.
Oh what a steep plain
with twenty soles above.
What rivers stood
she catches a glimpse of her fantasy!
But she continues with her flowers,
while standing in the breeze,
light plays chess
top of the lattice.

I'm not sure how well this shows the contrast between the smooth silk and metallic sequins! This is about 1.5" square, with black silk and black sequins that reflect and refract all kinds of colours.

Here's a bit of historical information gleaned from Wikipedia...."Evidence exists that gold sequins were being used as decoration on clothing or paraphernalia in the Indus Valley as early as 2500 BC, during the Kot Diji phase. Solid gold sequins sewn into royal garments were found inside the tomb of Tutankhamun.
During the 1920s, after the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, sequins witnessed a renewed popularity as a consequence of Egyptomania. The usage of sequins (typically made out of metal) were widely popularized as a fashion statement by flapper girls during this period."

In this case they are for a friend, who like me, elects red as her favourite colour, but also likes gold, white, black and silver accents for her tree.
Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the flowers, the larger of the petals which are 10mm and their centres which are 4mm. The flower centres are raised cups and are imported from France. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the flowers until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.
These baubles are smaller than some others I do, and because it is a simple pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours per side.

Taken while looking for Sequins - a challenge in the Looking Close on Friday theme this week. I have no sequins in my wardrobe but I found loads of sequin encrusted clothes in Marks and Spencer. They look extremely uncomfortable to me and I wonder how many will be left for the January sales?
These were all gold and the red colour is the reflection of my phone cover!
Needless to say I didn’t buy!

HMM- the macromondays' theme for today is "in a row". i have two possibilities-- these rows are just over inch and a half inch tall, so axiomatically this picture is almost 2 inches wide.
